5 Factors to optimize efficient visual comfort in lighting concepts - ERCO

SustainabilityLight not luminaireDark sky complianceLow on maintenanceLow on energy consumptionEfficient visual comfortUse of efficient energy source

DARK SKY – ‘Light is only directed where it is intended’Precise light controlDefined cut-off angleOptimum visual comfortCareful aiming

Vertical illuminanceVertical illuminance is a characteristic feature of well-designed, economical lighting concepts. For this reason, ERCO offers a particularly wide range of appropriate lighting tools. Vertical illuminance using special wallwashers is far more important to the subjective perception of brightness than the light on horizontal surfaces.

Qualitative lighting designCareful, perception oriented lighting design uses light specifically to meet the requirements of the user: vertical lighting, for example, provides a subjectively high impression of brightness in a room. The same applies to controlled accent lighting which is invariably more effective than blanket high levels of lighting. Lighting tools which provide good visual comfort prevent glare and inherently allow the designer to produce an energy efficient solution with lower illuminance levels and subtle contrasts.

Effective lighting technologyEfficient, precise optical systems lower the energy requirement for lighting. A comprehensive toolbox of lighting equipment ensures optimal and thus efficient light distribution for specific lighting tasks. This extends from the asymmetric wallwasher and various spotlight characteristics to the reflector lens system for illumination of product displays in shops. Innovations such as the ERCO Spherolit reflectors provide both high light output ratios and visual comfort. New light sources such as high-power LEDs with their directed beam require entirely different light guidance systems than conventional lamps.

Intelligent lighting controlThis is in combination with automated light management using sensor systems and timer programs which have the potential for enormous savings. Typical scenarios here include the use of presence detectors to dim or switch off the light in unused rooms or else, twilight switches or analogue daylight sensors to call up light scenes depending on the amount of available daylight. ERCO DALI system provides ease of installation, setup and ease of operation.

Efficient lampsERCO is heavily involved in the development of LED lighting equipment and also continues to provide an exceptionally wide range of products for use with economical, long-lasting metal halide lamps and compact fluorescent lamps.

WELCOME TO THE NEW OUTDOORS.vis à vis living, a specialist in outdoor furniture and accessories proudly announces the launch of world renowned outdoor furniture brands in India - EMU from Italy, Gandia Blasco from Spain and Paola Lenti from Italy.

vis à vis Living aims to tap the niche segment of premium outdoor furniture and accessories. Outdoor living is the first interface to a space and deserves the importance that Interiors has enjoyed more for making a comfort and style statement. And vis à vis Living intends to bridge the gap.

Re-Trouve born from a collaboration between Emu and designer Patricia Urquiola, is a collection which evokes past forms created with superior technology. In the words of Urquiola, its history and its industrial production situation all sparked an instant flame: “Inspiration came from the marvelous iron chairs of the ‘50’s, so full of curls and doodles. I wanted to create new models which would bring together a re-interpretation of this old-fashioned design with a humorous twist, produced with numerical control technology”.

Island received the Mention of Honour for the 20th Compasso d’Oro Award of ADI.

Frame, designed by Francesco Rota in 2005, gives tridimensionality and body to this new material. By using the unique fabrics, Paola Lenti creates aesthetic furniture design which stands apart, due to its colors, textures, and shapes.

SHEIKH ZAYED MOSQUE, ABU DHABI, UAE

Architect: Yusef Abdelki, Halcrow (Executive Architects)Spatium Architects, Milano (Interior Design)Lighting designer: Speirs and Major AssociatesEdinburgh Photographer: Charles Crowell, Black StarPlace: Abu Dhabi

Rising up in dazzling white, the massive Sheikh Zayed Mosque appears almost like a mirage at the east end of the island in the Persian Gulf which forms the centre of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. This House of God, is a building of superlatives: it is the largest mosque in the Emirates and the third largest worldwide.

The requirements of the clients, the concept devised by the lighting designers and the philosophy of ERCO as supplier of the lighting tools went hand in hand in this project.

The light sources needed to be concealed as inconspicuously as possible, while special focus was to be put on vertical illumination. The central hall is vaulted by massive domes. The various lighting components, which include “play of brilliance” in the form of a gigantic chandelier, can be combined to create the right mood for any time of the day and occasion. Energy efficiency now is a key factor even in the Gulf States, which is why ERCO’s lighting tools are fitted with economical, long-life metal halide lamps wherever dimming is not required.

The mosque was awarded the ‘Middle East Lighting Design Award 2008’ for the best lighting project in the entire Middle East. The grounds of the mosque will now also feature products from ERCO: several hundreds of spotlights, recessed floor luminaires and over a thousand stair lights with modern, energy-saving LED technology will soon provide efficient visual comfort.

SPOTLIGHT: MANAV BHARGAVA & KAPIL SURLAKAR CASE STUDY: ERCO FOR SHEIKH ZAYED MOSQUE, ABU DHABI

Q & A WITH KAPIL BALAKRISHNA SINAI SURLAKAR Interviewed by Amit Gupta, vis à vis

A Practicing Architect with a Masters in Architectural Lighting Design (Germany) and a Post graduate Diploma in Business Management. Awarded the IESNA Award of excellence for the Akshardham temple in New Delhi and the Professional Lighting Design Recognition Award at PLDC London in 2007 as the best newcomer in the profession Globally.

Q. WHAT IS YOUR PHILOSOPHY BEHIND LIGHTING DESIGN? A. Humans diurnally are governed by light. Light is a medium that can aid in human comfort. Broadly, comfort could be defined as ‘well being’ perceived individually or collectively as beauty, aesthetic living conditions, enhanced commerce, better urban environments, happiness, security, art, health, etc. Design is an educated intervention to intentionally achieve all or some of the attributes of human comfort.

Q. WHAT KIND OF PROJECTS EXCITE YOU?A. All projects come with a unique identity. Every project is exciting and challenging. It would be unfair to categorize any genre of project as exciting for the fear of exclusion of others, which can be equally exciting, if approached with the right design mindset. However, hospitality, large scale urban and social light Master planning as well as heritage projects are the projects that draw my attention.

Q. COULD YOU SHED SOME LIGHTS ON NEW TRENDS IN LIGHTING DESIGN?A. It’s a media age. Buildings now literally send out messages. Media screens and dynamic lighting are redefining and re-interpreting building facades. Lighting controls and automation open out vast possibilities. ‘Green’ is the buzzword. LEDs, offer dynamic opportunities, however are under constant review for performance.

DESIGNER PROFILE: MANAV BHARGAVA

Manav Bhargava - with a background in architecture, has been involved with lighting projects ranging from art galleries, museums, heritage sites, hospitality, urban spaces including development of lighting master plans. His approach to lighting encompasses ecological and environmental issues like day-lighting, sustainability and light pollution.

His work is driven by the simple idea of engaging people. He believes light is not about what one sees, but how light interacts with the observer - both at a conscious and the subconscious levels. Perception and memories – individual and collective, actually become the medium with lighting just a tool.

LALIT KALA ACADEMYThe brief for the Lalit Kala Akademi, the Indian Government’s apex art and culture organization, was simple – to allow flexibility for quick arrangement of virtually any lighting situation desired. However the solution was not so simple, as the result were not to be adjudged by the Museum Standards, but by the achieved level of simulating & dramatic light for the displayed artifacts.Architect : K.T. Ravindran

AMBER SON-ET-LUMIEREThe sound and light show locale at Amber is an architectural theatre, with no live actors and designed sets. Light is the tool skillfully used for passing on information, or used for symbolic representation in literal or abstract forms. At times it becomes the actor and at other times it creates the setting for the act, the mood and thus providing the necessary drama. In doing so, lighting also complements the script and music. In this case, lighting direction has played a very significant role in unfolding the story of the site. Script : GulzarMusic : Bhavdeep JaipurwaleArt Direction : Mukesh Bhargava

Language of attracting, inviting, retaining and giving an experience.

Lighting design plays a critical role in lighting up a hospitality place and needs to be articulate enough to adapt to psychological needs keeping in mind that the space could be used for relaxing, entertaining or for business.

Basic guiding factors -

Ambient luminescenceUniform general lighting, for eg. in foyer area helping in orientation.

Focal GlowThis includes accent lighting used to highlight objects, surfaces or spatial zones resulting in perceptual hierarchies. Light beams creating island of intimacy.

Play of brillianceA play of brilliance is produced by decorative light, which adds yet another dimension to an interior space by dividing or creating spaces, by creating patterns.

ScenographyGastronomy is one of the most obvious areas of application for scenographic lighting. It adapts to changing moods, emotions, time of the day and season or could be a festivity or special private occasion.
