Introduction

About data synchronizationData synchronization is a standard feature of most handheld operating systems where information or records are synchronized between a handheld device and a PC. For example, if you add a new entry on your handheld devices’ Address List, it is automatically written to the PC during data synchronization. Synchronization changes only the data that has been modified, updated or added, which reduces the time it takes to complete the operation.

NOTE: The data synchronization manager must be running to perform a data exchange operation.

For the following operating systems, the synchronization manager is:

HotSync Manager

OverviewThis version of VirusScan Wireless for Palm OS includes two types of scanners, each with its own interface:

• On-sync scanner — on the PC and Palm deviceA complete VirusScan Wireless interface that you can configure on either the PC (VirusScan Wireless for Palm OS) or the Palm device (SyncScan). An on-sync scanner searches for and detects viruses when you perform a data synchronization with HotSync.

• Stand-alone Scanner — on the PalmA small VirusScan application that resides on your Palm handheld device. A stand-alone scanner allows you to scan your device for viruses any time, without having to be connected to your PC. The scanner can delete any virus it finds, and logs its activity according to the options you select in its easy-to-use interface.

IMPORTANT: For full anti-virus protection, VirusScan Wireless must be installed on the PC with which you synchronize the handheld device; otherwise, you will not be able to scan your device for viruses during synchronization.

You can configure the on-sync scanner on either the Palm or the PC; however, you only need to configure one. Both applications provide the same options, which determine the behavior of the scan during any HotSync operation. Changing options on either the Palm device or the PC changes both sides on synchronization.

NOTE: During a HotSync operation, the only files scanned are files that go through the conduit to and from the device.

• To configure the on-sync scanner on the PC, see page 18.

• To configure the on-sync scanner on the Palm device, see page 19.

• To run a HotSync operation once you’ve configured the on-sync scanner, see “Synchronizing your files” on page 20.

77Updating your .DAT files

Why update? To protect your data from new virus strains, you must regularly update the virus definition (.DAT) files and scanning engine that VirusScan Wireless software version 2.0 uses. Because hundreds of new viruses appear each month, McAfee releases new .DAT files weekly, and periodically provides a new scanning engine.

VirusScan Wireless includes the AutoUpdate utility, with an interface on the PC, that automatically updates your .DAT files and scanning engine. This chapter describes this utility and its interface.

What’s in this chapter? This chapter provides the following information:

• “Overview of AutoUpdate” on page 44Basic information about the utility.

• “Configuring AutoUpdate” on page 45How to set all the options for the utility.

• “Updating your .DATs” on page 53How to run the AutoUpdate utility to download the latest .DATs and scanning engine from McAfee.

• “Dealing with a virus outbreak” on page 54Basic information about McAfee’s Anti-Virus Emergency Response Team (AVERT). Includes information on EXTRA.DAT files that are released to handle virus outbreaks.

Updating your .DAT files

Overview of AutoUpdateVirus definition files, which are identified by the extension .DAT, are stored on the Network Associates FTP site:

ftp://ftp.nai.com/pub/antivirus/datfiles/4.x

The .DAT package consists of a .ZIP archive file named DAT-XXXX.ZIP, where XXXX is a series number that changes with each release. The AutoUpdate utility downloads these files according to the way you have configured the settings on three tabs in the interface:

• Update SitesAccept the default Network Associates FTP site or define additional sites (up to 16) from which to download the archive package. When defining additional sites, the system administrator manually replicates the contents of the Network Associates site to their local site; this minimizes bandwidth during downloads.

• AdvancedSelect update options, such as whether to back up the existing .DAT files.

• Log ActivitySelect options for the way you want to record the AutoUpdate activity.

NOTE: You can also access the latest .DAT files from the McAfee download web site:

4. Click the Advanced tab to view the configuration options for AutoUpdate.

5. In the Advanced Update Options area, choose any of the following options (for the on-sync scanner only):

• Back up the existing .DAT filesRenames existing .DAT files before installing new files. The original files are copied to a directory called DAT_XXXX.SAV.

• Update scanning engine if newer scanning engine existsReplaces the scanning engine you are currently using with a more recent one, if one exists.

• Force-Update .DAT files and scanning engineForcibly updates the .DAT files and scanning engine with the downloaded versions.

NOTE: You might select this checkbox if the current .DAT file has been corrupted or rendered ineffective because an essential file has been inadvertently deleted.

6. Click the Log Activity tab to configure the logging options.

7. Verify that Log activity to file is selected; if it is not, all other options are disabled and no log activity is recorded.

Updating your .DAT files

Defining multiple update sitesEach computer in a network can retrieve the update files directly from the Network Associates FTP site, which is the default that appears in the AutoUpdate interface. This works well for a single user or a small network. However, if you are a system administrator for an extensive network and some computers do not have access to the internet, or if many computers are downloading at once, the process can consume significant time and bandwidth.

To alleviate this problem, you can manually copy the update files from the Network Associates FTP site to one or more local “mirror” sites, from which your computers can access the latest .DAT files and scanning engine.

To define multiple update sites:

1. Open the VirusScan Wireless interface. See Step 1 and Step 2 on page 45 for instructions.

2. In the Update Sites window, click Add to open the Site Options window.

Updating your .DAT files

3. In the Site Name box, enter a unique name for the site you are creating. This name appears in the Update Sites list.

4. Enable site is selected; if you want to create a site but not yet enable it, deselect this option. When you want to enable this site, you can open the AutoUpdate window at any time and select this option.

5. In the Retrieve Files From area, select one of three types of update sites:

• UNC path (see “For a UNC shared folder” on page 51)

• FTP site (see “For an FTP site” below)

• Local path (see “For a local folder” on page 52)

The lower portion of the window displays different options, depending on your selection. FTP Site is selected, and login credentials are not required, as shown in Figure 7-2 on page 48.

6. Enter the necessary information for your selection.

For an FTP site

a. In the FTP site box, enter the name of the FTP server and the directory containing the file or files. You must include the complete URL for the site; for example, ftp.myserver/install.

If you want to use the Network Associates FTP site, click Default to automatically enter the information.

b. Depending on the FTP site requirements for login credentials, do one of the following:

• Verify that Use anonymous FTP login is selected if the FTP site does not require login credentials (like the Network Associates FTP site).

• Deselect Use anonymous FTP login if the FTP site requires login credentials. Then enter the User name and Password information required for access to the server.

Updating your .DAT files

c. Ask your system administrator whether the FTP site handles active or passive FTP communications, then do one of the following:

• Verify that Use passive FTP is selected if the FTP site allows this kind of communication.

• Deselect Use passive FTP if the FTP site requires active FTP communication.

NOTE: Passive FTP is effective in environments using a firewall or proxy because the client opens both the command session and the data session, eliminating firewall or proxy interference with client/server communication.

However, some networks offer only active FTP, where the client opens the command session and the server opens the data session. Active FTP transmission may be subject to firewall or proxy interference.

d. Select Use proxy server if your network requires a proxy server. Then, in the two enabled text boxes, enter the name of the proxy server and the port it uses.

IMPORTANT: If you are using proxy software, be certain that you have the most current version, including any service packs that have been released for use with the proxy software.

e. When you have made your selections, click OK to save your changes and return to the Update Sites window.

For a UNC shared folder

a. In the UNC path box, enter the path of the shared folder that contains the update files, using UNC notation (\\servername\path). You can also click Browse to select a folder on your network.

b. Select the type of account you are using:

• Use logged in account is automatically selected. Make sure that the user who performs the update has the appropriate rights to access the shared folder.

On Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows ME systems, the currently logged-in user must have “read” rights to the shared folder.

• To use an account other than the logged-in user, deselect Use logged in account and enter a User name and Password.

c. Click OK to save your changes and return to the Update Sites window.

For a local folder

a. In the Path box, enter the path of the local folder that contains the update files; for example, C:\DATS\. You can also click Browse to select a folder on your PC.

b. Click OK to save your changes and return to the Update Sites window.

7. If you want to add more Update Sites, repeat Step 2 through Step 6 of this procedure. You can define a maximum of 16 sites, each with a unique name.

8. The order in which the sites appear in the list is the order in which the software looks for the file. Typically, you would put the nearest site first. To change the order, highlight a site and click Move Up or Move Down.

9. When you have defined all the Update Sites:

• To start the AutoUpdate utility and immediately download the latest .DATs and scanning engine, click Update Now.

• To update at a later time, click OK to save your changes and close the AutoUpdate window.

Updating your .DAT files

Updating your .DATsOnce you have configured AutoUpdate according to your needs, you can run the utility any time. McAfee releases new .DAT files on Wednesday of every week. To ensure that your system is always protected with the latest .DATs and scanning engine, McAfee recommends running the utility once a week; for example, on Thursday.

Follow these steps to run the AutoUpdate utility:

1. Open the VirusScan Wireless application on the PC: from the Start menu, select Programs, then McAfee VirusScan Wireless, then choose the menu item for your handheld device.

2. In the VirusScan Wireless window, click Update to open the AutoUpdate window.

3. Click Update Now to start the AutoUpdate utility and immediately download the latest .DATs and scanning engine.

4. Click OK to close the VirusScan Wireless window.

IMPORTANT: If your handheld device is a Palm OS device, you must perform a HotSync to transfer the latest .DAT files and scanning engine from your PC to the Palm device. See See “Synchronizing your files” on page 20 for instructions.

Updating your .DAT files

Dealing with a virus outbreakThe McAfee AVERT research organization may publish new .DAT files (called EXTRA.DAT) when it determines that either of these conditions exists:

• A virus presents a “medium on-watch,” “high risk threat of infection”, or “high risk outbreak“ situation. To learn about what constitutes a medium on-watch or high risk, or to learn about McAfee AVERT risk assessment in general, visit the AVERT web site at:

www.mcafeeb2b.com/avert/

• A high-prevalence virus threatens an outbreak situation.

The new virus definition files are designed to detect the infection and, if possible, to clean an infected file.

When AVERT publishes an EXTRA.DAT file, they announce its availability and a location where you can download the file. If you subscribe to the Enterprise SecureCast update service, you can receive all such alert messages.

When notified of an outbreak, run the AutoUpdate utility and click Update Now for immediate protection. See “Updating your .DATs” on page 53 for the detailed procedure.
