How Co-existence Works
• Inbound e-mail routes first to on-premises server and then to Exchange Online• Directory Sync keeps address
lists and groups up to date• Wizard-based setup process
simplifies deployment
virtual techdaysINDIA │ 18-20 august 2010
Active Directory Synchronization
• Directory Sync tool installed on local server• Synchronizes on-premises Active Directory with Microsoft Online• Simplifies user provisioning• Powers unified global address list
virtual techdaysINDIA │ 18-20 august 2010
Directory Synchronization Tool
• Installs on server that is part of Active Directory forest• Copies all users to the Microsoft Online Environment• Continues to replicate updates in Active Directory to Online every 3 hours• Creates the basis for co-existence after installation• Passwords are not replicated
Action Active Directory Microsoft OnlineImmediately after first synchronization

AD Cleanup & Account Mgmt
• Before synch - review AD for:– Non-required accounts, groups, etc.– E-mail address formats– Invalid characters, such as ‘ @#$%&– Errors are logged and sent to technical contact– Note that invalid character list may change as services are updated– MailNickname will have “_” substituted for invalid character– Disabled accounts (will be replicated)– Active Directory size: max 25,000 objects:– E-mail-enabled contacts + Distribution Lists + Users– If you will exceed 25,000, contact MSOL support

Validating Synchronization
• Event viewer entries– Installation events– Synchronization
events
• Errors mailed to technical contact for BPOS account• ILM can be used for viewing status
virtual techdaysINDIA │ 18-20 august 2010
• By default, non-mail-enabled accounts are synchronized, except for those with an ‘{‘ in the mailnickname (alias) Active Directory property
• To prevent an account from being synchronised, add the ‘{‘ to the Active Directory accounts’ mailnickname
Manually Filtering User Accounts
virtual techdaysINDIA │ 18-20 august 2010
• By default, all accounts in the forest are synchronized
• For companies with an ILM license, ILM can be set to scope the directory synchronization to a specific OU, Domain, or other scope
