The Southeast Asian country celebrates the arrival of the new year on April 13 with a three-day-long festival known as Songkran. Songkran is a celebration of transformation. The word Songkran stems from the Sanskrit word samkrānti, which translates to “astrological passage.” It conveys the idea of change and rejuvenation — and the Songkran festival is all about rejuvenation. Throughout Thailand, you’ll find countless celebrations. Some people mark the occasion by making trips to their local temples to offer food to the Buddhist monks. For me, this is one of the most memorable lines in a movie that

literally changed (or reinforced) the view of dentistry for millions of people. “Marathon Man” was to dentistry what Jaws was to swimming in the ocean. Lawrence Olivier, the sadistic Nazi dentist, asked this question of Dustin Hoffman. I’ll spare you the details. If you wish, you can watch it on Netflix or YouTube.

“Is it safe?” is a question many ask about our infrastructure, our health care system, our food, and even our drinking water.

We are in the midst of a crisis of confidence in almost everything.

Last month, our National Weather Service purposely promoted a less than truthful forecast in the New York area. They predicted a 12 to 24-inch snowfall. And, when it became apparent that the likely accumulations would be less, someone decided NOT to change the prediction.

So, preparations were made for a huge snow event. Businesses were closed, troops were mobilized, and preparations were made for a multi-day event that could have paralyzed the city.

While 7 inches of snow is nothing to sneeze at, it’s not a catastrophic event. In Buffalo, it wouldn’t even be considered a minor inconvenience.

Who do you believe?

While it would be nice to trust, that trust has been so undermined that intense scrutiny, whenever possible,

is warranted. More than ever, it’s up to each of us individually to educate ourselves and protect ourselves and those we love and care for.

I’m not paranoid by nature. Quite on the contrary, I’m overly trusting. But when it comes to health matters, I realize that we’re not getting the right information in the proper context.

Why is it that chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, arthritis, and other autoimmune diseases are on the rise?

Could it be that our air, food, and water supply is not as healthy as we’ve been led to believe?

Could it be that some of us are sensitive to chemicals, additives, and other things we eat, drink, and breathe?

Could it be that things we’ve been told healthy are not?

Could it be that no one is looking at you as an individual with specific genetics, epigenetics, and environmental factors taken into consideration and guiding you accordingly?

At least as far as your mouth is concerned, Manhattan Dental Health tries to take all these factors into consideration. And, we try to

connect this to your overall health. It’s a unique approach and one that is, unfortunately, all too rare in our current, impersonalized health system.

One of the biggest tech stories to come out of 2016 was the emergence of virtual reality technology. Microsoft took the tech world by storm when it announced a line of VR headsets with built-in tracking sensors, starting at the remarkably affordable price of $299.

The coolest part about this particular virtual reality option is its “six degrees of freedom” tracking. In many cases, virtual reality is just the 360-degree panorama. But with six degrees of freedom, the tracking system can also see when you’re moving through space! That’s the main difference between the pricey VR options like Oculus Rift and the cheap entries.

These headsets are designed to work with a Windows 10 computer, which makes this technology accessible to millions of potential

users who may not have a specialized platform like a game console.

Competition is heating up among the major players in virtual reality, which is great for consumers and tech enthusiasts. Along with virtual reality, augmented reality is continuing to develop, and these technologies are predicted to make up a combined $150 billion market by 2020. Not only will AR and VR transform entertainment, but they’ll also have a dramatic effect on fields like health care, education, sports, and tourism.

Expect to see virtual reality truly enter the mainstream this year. Looking back, 2016 was the first year where virtual reality systems were widely available for consumers to purchase, as well as for developers and content creators to work with. If virtual reality is today’s television revolution, we’ve just hit the era of full color.

Get ready to experience the sights in faraway places, socialize in a virtual space, play immersive games, complete job training in private, and so much more!

All homes, no matter the size, could use more storage space. Everyone has their list of items that end up getting “put away” in different places — or those items they can never seem to find. Most homes can gain a little extra capacity through smart organizational systems. Here are a few tips for increasing organization and streamlining the storage space in your house.

A great place to start is to categorize the items you need to store. While having one or two spaces for miscellaneous items doesn’t hurt, the more junk drawers you have, the more likely it is items will end up there, making them hard to find and track. Find a logical, intuitive location for items, and you will be surprised by how naturally organization follows. You should think about the space an object occupies as an extension of the object itself — the way your home is an extension of you. Specific containers will help you make sure items end up where they belong. The Container Store is an awesome resource for finding all sorts of useful storage contraptions that will fit spaces of any size and shape. Check out their website and receive free shipping on orders over $75.

Labeling containers will remind you of precisely what belongs in each space. Little

dry-erase boards, which are also available through The Container Store, allow you to relabel containers as needed. You can also set up baskets for each member of the house for their various items that are frequently used. This tactic will help keep your family from losing easily misplaced items like keys, wallets, phones, and chargers. Plus, decorating these baskets is a fun way for each family member to express their personality.

Don’t be afraid to seek unique solutions when it comes to storage. If you have high ceilings in your kitchen, for example, you can hang pots and pans from hooks. Large objects like bicycles, which use up a lot of ground space, can be hung from walls in your garage. The website ABowlFullOfLemons.net has all sorts of clever home organization hacks, and they have even published a book called “The Complete Book of Home Organization,” which is an invaluable resource.

With an open mind and a little ingenuity, you will be surprised at how much extra storage space you can create. Sometimes using the space you have more efficiently is just as valuable as adding more space to the equation.

Everyone knows the pillars of solid dental hygiene: brush and floss daily, use

mouthwash, visit your dentist twice a year, etc. Almost as important, though, is avoiding habits that will damage your teeth and mouth. Stay away from these practices if you want to keep your smile at its best.

One horrible habit that will harm your teeth is smoking. In addition to the well-documented health risks of tobacco, nicotine causes yellowing of the teeth and can damage your gums. Smokeless tobacco, sometimes called dip, is hardly better. Dip and chewing tobacco are major contributors to oral cancer and can shrink your gums. Industrial tobacco is also filled with all sorts of chemicals you would never put anywhere near your teeth in any other circumstance, including ammonia and arsenic.

A good rule of thumb when it comes to your dental health is to only use your mouth for eating and drinking. Biting your nails or using your teeth to rip open packaging can lead to structural damage and jaw problems. If you wouldn’t want to digest an object, don’t chew on it either.

When it comes to actual food, there are a few items that tend to cause problems. As your parents probably told you when you were a child, hard candies will chip your teeth if you are not careful. The same goes for sticky foods like taffy, which can dislodge fillings. Ice is another hazard. Even though it’s only water, ice is extremely hard and can harm your teeth.

There are plenty of beverages you should consume in moderation or banish altogether from your diet as well. One of the biggest culprits when it comes to tooth decay is non-diet sodas. While they may taste good, these beverages offer zero nutritional value and cause cavities. In addition to being high in sugar, most sodas also contain a large amount of acid, another ingredient you should seek to limit. Coffee and tea can also cause staining — but won’t lead to decay, as long as you limit the sugar content.

If you want to keep your teeth bright and beautiful, you should avoid these harmful habits. Keeping your smile brilliant is hard work, and you don’t want to undo all that brushing and flossing with a few bad tendencies.
