Virtual Reality at Danville High School

Donors of the Danville Public School

Foundation in partnership with the

Iroquois Federal Foundation, recently

funded a classroom set of Virtual Reality

viewers and support equipment for

Danville High School teacher Tyler

Overstreet. The viewers, along with

using the Google Expeditions app, a vir-

tual reality tool, allows Mr. Overstreet to

lead immersive virtual trips all over the

world, get up close with historical land-

marks, and even visit outer space.

Using the viewers, Mr. Overstreet acts as

a “guide” leading his classroom of

“explorers” through collections of 360°

and 3D images while pointing out inter-

esting sights along the way.

As a history teacher, Mr. Overstreet has

already taken his students back to

experience America’s depression era.

Our donors make a difference!

365 Club Breakfast Celebrates Successes

The Danville Public School Founda-

tion’s 2019, 365 Club Breakfast was

a chance for our donors to celebrate

the Foundation’s successes.

The Julius W. Hegeler II Foundation

was again our title sponsor.

Our donors arrived January 17 at

Turtle Run Banquet Center and

enjoyed an early morning breakfast.

Executive Director Bob Richard

thanked those in attendance for the

support of “their” Foundation. It was

through our donors’ efforts that the

School Foundation was able to

provide $86,000 last year in funding

for various projects in support of the

Foundation’s mission of providing

enhanced educational opportunities.

The morning’s program highlighted

three projects that were funded by

the Foundation.

Mr. Tanner DeLaurier, Administrative

Intern from South View Upper

Elementary School, and sixth-grade

student, Addyson Gritton, presented

about the My Life Online school-wide

assembly conducted in October.

Addyson explained she learned the

importance of posting only things that

are true, kind and represents herself

in a positive manner.

From Mark Denman Elementary

School teacher Mrs. Sara Warren,

along with fourth-grade students

Adreanna Hill, Samuel Sanchez, and

Anna York, shared information about

their field trip to the Museum of

Science and Industry in Chicago.

This joint venture between the Foun-

dation and Danville School District

118 allowed all fourth-grade students

an opportunity to tour the museum

and participate in a Crime Scene In-

vestigation Learning Lab. Students

were told of a “crime” and were pro-

vided clues. Using scientific meth-

ods, they had to determine who com-

mitted the “crime.”

To end the morning, Danville High

School History teacher Mr. Tyler

Overstreet and Danville High School

junior Morgan Mourer explained to

our guests about the classroom set of

virtual reality googles provided by the

Foundation. (See story on page 1)

To all 365 Club members, thank you

for making a difference everyday!

The mission of the Danville Public School Foundation is to

promote, aid and encourage enhanced educational

opportunities for the students of Danville Public Schools

beyond those provided by tax dollars.

Page 4

The Danville Public School Founda-

tion is honored to sponsor the

Danville District 118 Fine Arts Show-

case on April 27 at Danville High

School.

Approximately 700-800 students will

participate in the Fine Arts Showcase

displaying their art work in an art

galley format and/or performing

music in a concert setting.

The Fine Arts Showcase is open to

the public and admission is free.

Brian Klett, band director at North

Ridge Middle School, applied for a

Classroom Grant to help fund this

initiative and will coordinate the event.

Included in the grant award are funds

to cover the expenses of “Artist in

Residence,” Joan Creamer. Ms.

Creamer will be visiting with 300 art

students prior to the Showcase. After

graduation from the Cleveland Insti-

tute of Art, Ms. Creamer became

General Motors first female exterior

designer. She then designed for Gen-

eral Electric before beginning her own

business of product design.

The Foundation wishes much

success to the student artists!

Garfield Elementary Students to Perform with

St. Louis Symphony Orchestra

Mr. Joseph Legg, music teacher at Garfield

Elementary School, requested a Classroom

Grant from the Danville Public School Founda-

tion to purchase recorders, a woodwind instru-

ment, for his students who will be performing

with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra in May.

A select group of 40 third- and fourth-grade

students from Garfield Elementary have been

selected to perform with the St. Louis Sympho-

ny Orchestra as part of the symphony’s

children's concert series.

The symphony requires a specific recorder for

the children to participate and the School

Foundation was happy to award a grant to

purchase the recorders from Danville’s own

B & J Music.

We wish all the students good luck in this

wonderful learning opportunity.
