Scouter Perspective

I am grateful for the opportunity to participate virtually. It has been a long March Break! From cancelled meetings, trips and camps the Scouting tradition has always been an adaptive program and the pandemic has once again proven we are strong, pivot when necessary and are relevant in today's Society!!! While Scouting does not look the same and won't for some time to come. I can feel the Scouting Spirit through my screen and keyboard just as surely as you are all standing beside me! Back to Gilwell, Happy Land! Melanie Pereira Oshawa Contingent

“SETTING YOUR PRIORITIES” TAKE CARE OF YOUR ROCKS FIRST

A philosophy professor stood before his class and had some items in front of him. When class began, wordlessly he picked you a large empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with rocks, rocks about 2” in diameter. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed it was. So, the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles, of course, rolled into the open areas between the rocks. He then asked the students again it the jar was full. They agreed it was. The students laughed. The professor picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. “Now”, said the professor, “I want you to recognize that this is your life. The rocks are the important things – your family, your partner, your health, your children – anything that is so important to you that it where lost, you would be devastated. The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house, your car, your friends. The sand is everything else, the small stuff. If you put the sand into the jar first, there is no room for the pebbles or the rocks. The same goes for your life. If you spend all your energy and time on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your partner out dancing. There will also be time to go to work, clean the house, give a dinner party and fix the disposal. “Take care of the rocks first – the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.” Submitted by Whitby Contingent

Karen Smith – Gone Home Karen was a very active member of Scouts Canada for almost 20 years. Karen started in the organization as a Rover with the 2nd Burlington Rover Crew, where she met her husband Cam. At the time of her passing in July, Karen was an active Scouter with the 31st Hamilton Beaver Colony and a Camp Factor at the Mount Nemo Scout Camp. Karen also held the position of DAC Colony for Hamilton, was a volunteer with the Hamilton Scout Shop, a depot coordinator for Apple Day and assisted with the coordination of numerous Chopperee and Beaveree events. Prior to her involvement with Hamilton, Karen was the Area Secretary for Fruitbelt for several years and remained an active Gilwellian with Fruitbelt. Karen held her Woodbadge Part II, trained on numerous Part I courses and was presented with the Bar to the Medal of Good Service in 2018. A faithful friend, Scouter and mentor who is missed by many.

Brownsea Contingent  Dale Bohn We are sad to report that long time Brownsea contingent member Dale Bohn passed away on June 1, 2020 after a reappearance of pancreatic cancer. Dale was a member of the Brownsea contingent since its inauguration and was the member who best understood our contingent’s propane system. Along with the late Art Shaff, he was part of the team that created and distributed the annual “Gilwell parchment”, carrying on the tradition started by Paul Baudouin in 1975. His contributions to our Reunion will be missed.

Brownsea Contingent Arthur Shaff We are sad to report that long time Brownsea contingent member Art Shaff passed away on May 19, 2020 after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease. Art was a member of the Brownsea contingent since its inauguration and was a member of the Downsview contingent before that. He was instrumental in the creation of the annual “Gilwell parchment”, carrying on the tradition started by Paul Baudouin in 1975. His contributions to our Reunion will be missed.

Gone Home 2019-2020

Gary Gibbons, February 12th, 2020 - 55 years of Service in North Waterloo Scouting. He will be missed. Nottawasaga Paul Martel (Innisfil, Ontario), who passed away suddenly at Royal Victoria Regional Hospital Barrie on August 6, 2020, at the age of 86. Paul joined Scouts as a youth and began his long volunteer association with the organization. He enjoyed leading the Scouts while serving in the Armed Forces and after. His different roles included Scout Leader, Scout Master, and Scouting District Commissioner in Essa Township. Paul was creative in so many ways and enjoyed woodworking and graphic arts. Further details at: https://www.innisfilfuneralhome.ca/obituary/Paul-Martel Hamilton Contingent Rick Provo, long-time Gilwellian, passed away last night. He has been a member of Scouting for 55 years and has served as a Cub Leader, Service Team Member, Camp and Property Committee member and Factor at Mount Nemo Scout Camp. He will be sadly missed by so many. Our sincere sympathy and love goes to his wife Sue and children and their families. Windsor Scouter John Brimner was only 61 and lost his battle with cancer this week. Those who seen him at reunion every year will remember him as a joker who was always out to make everyone smile. I will remember him as a dedicated Scouter, and great friend. RIP Scouter John.

Peterborough Gilwell Club, that Ron Ross and Jane Balfor-Park have both gone home Scouter Ken Hunphries of 7th St. Thomas ElginGwildgeese contingent has gone home. He's sitting 'round the eternal campfire with friends family and scouters alike. He"ll be missed. Likely you have a silkscreen he did for you at reunions gone by. RIP Alina Tarbhai was among the most caring, and generous people I know. She volunteered with scouting, was a member of our community’s eco team, special needs support and a teacher at our local Sunday school. And she always had a smile on her face and kind words to share no matter how hard things became. Kids would continue to call her Rainbow at our Masjid (mosque) when they saw her not at scouts and many years after they had left beavers. When my son was born, she had to give me a yellow duck so that every time I would see it, I would think of her and of yellow waterfowl. My condolences to her father and son who lost their mother/wife and daughter/sister in this tragedy Scouter Beth Cleaton.

Not sure how many current Scouters will remember Beth Cleaton, but she was fabulous Scouter, a talented trainer, and a strong Council Commissioner, and an active Gilwellian. Beth Cleaton Passed away peacefully at Belleville General Hospital on Monday, December 23rd, 2019 at the age of 65 years. Loving mother of Iain Cleaton & his wife Amy and Sean Cleaton & his wife Jenn. Loving grandmother of Kenzie, Jena, Eoghan, Tierney, Jordanna and Ella. Survived by her siblings; brothers Bob & Jim Henderson, Kevin & Stuart Nixon and sister Doreen Oswald. Beth was an anchor to the community. She was instrumental and running the Scottish Irish Festival, very dedicated as a leader, teacher and mentor of numerous Pipe band's. She had a great love of her job and friends at St. Georges Anglican Church and was committed to Scout's Canada for 20 plus years. PRESTON BRADEN An American Scouter who attended the Reunion in the 1990s but was Called Home this past Easter Sunday.  He was with the then East Agincourt contingent (now just "Agincourt").

Blue Huron Frank "Bunny" Ireton. Scouter Anne Piper from OWASCO Oakville / Burlington Gilwell Club is very sad to pass along the news that we have lost Roy Mullins from Indianapolis. He had been bravely fighting cancer for the last few years and was called home this morning. Mary Heathcote (Burlington); Beth Cleaton (Oakville - and may also be listed under Trenton/Quinte? where she retired to) Harald Matthiessen (Oakville) passed Sept. 6 Shores To Shores Contingent- Richard Greene April 11/2020 from Chatham District. Don Menhennet, who was a member of the Wellington Contingent since 1985.

North Waterloo Father John Rogers - April 19th, 2020 - 55 years of Service in North Waterloo Scouting. He will be missed. He was from Michigan, but I do not know which contingent he was with. Being a priest, he would assist with Scouts' Own on Sunday mornings. He was also an original member of the Blue Springs Gilwell Pipe Band and Colour Party usually carrying the American Flag in our march-ons. Father John was a very long-time attendee at the Reunion. Father John will be missed.

Newbie Etiquette Last year’s “newbies” got in to a bit of mischief at this year’s virtual Gilwell reunion. During Woodbadge training at Samac Scouter Craig Rendall taught all of the Pack Scouters camping etiquette. He explained, “You must go to the edge of another group’s campsite and say, “Hi! My name is Scouter Craig. May I please enter your campsite?” and await their response before entering.” Well, this of course caught on quick with all of Pack and even others joining in and introducing themselves as “Scouter Craig”. So....Scouter Craig...what do you think of our shirts?!? Scouter Danielle, Marissa and Ryan (Oshawa and Whitby contingents)

Virtual Kub Kar Race Results Third place was taken by Brownsea. Scouter John wisely chose Car# 37 and it did his contingent well. First and second place was a nail biter as both Oshawa and SOCS-NCR were tied for points through most heats. A three race tie-breaker was run and ended with Oshawa taking second place and SOCS-NCR winning the competition. Special thanks to Oshawa for submitting their own Cub Car to race. Congratulations to all winners! 1st place - SOCS-NCR Car #24

2nd Place - Oshawa Car# 25 3rd Place - Brownsea Car# 37

Virtual Bingo Gilwellians enjoyed several rounds of Bingo with single line, four corners, two lines and full cards! Congratulations to our winners: Tracy Goldman (Windsor), Garnet Burt (North Halton) and Bob Thorn (North Waterloo) Thanks to all who participated. Thanks also to Marissa and Ryan for running our event and to Marissa for supplying our prizes of home made masks and lanyards.

Virtual Scouting Trivia After figuring out the intricacies of Kahoots we were on our way to some exciting rounds of Scouting trivia. Janet Wawbeck (sorry can't remember the Contingent) won rounds 1 and 2. Lloyd Clarke of Fruitbelt won round 3 and Karen Grant of West Scarborough won round 4. There was a very close race to the finish for round 5 between the team Norma and Rebecca Thompson of West Sub and Danielle Vandenberg of London. In the end it was team Norma and Rebecca who inched their way from behind to take the win. Thanks to everyone who dropped by to enjoy our events Thank you Sean and Kristine for organizing and running the Trivia game. We not only learned some trivia but we also now have an activity we can take back to use with our youth. A great time was had by all. Clare Ford Oshawa Contingent

Black Forest‐ish Cake This recipe is a favourite with the Scouts of 5th Agincourt. Maybe because it is easy for the Scouts to make or maybe because it is so tasty. It has been well received by members of the Brownsea Gilwell Contingent.

Ingredients  1 chocolate cake mix. After much study our Scouts recommend Duncan Hines Devil’s Food but a

Betty Crocker Devil’s Food is an OK substitute. Avoid the mixes that have “fudge” in the name. Eggs, oil, water, milk as detailed on the cake mix package. Don’t premeasure anything – let the kids

do it. One can of E. D. Smith cherry pie filling. No-name brands are not as good. At least one aerosol can of real whipped cream. Stay far away from that nasty edible oil product and

don’t even think about Dream Whip.

Method  Hand the Scout cooks the cake mix and let them figure it out. They’ll have to appoint at least one who

can read and follow instructions. Remind them where they can find the equipment and extra ingredients that they’ll need – but let them ask first.

If the cake mix box says to mix with an electric mixer then insist that one of the Scouts makes a whirring sound while stirring the batter.

Pour the cake batter into a twelve inch Dutch oven. Keep the Dutch oven level. Open the can of cherry pie filling and drop teaspoons of the pie filling into the cake batter. Try to get a

nice even distribution over the whole Dutch oven. Avoid getting pie filling directly on the sides of the Dutch oven. Don’t even think about moving a spoonful after it hits the batter – it stays where it first lands.

Cook the cake for about what the package says. Use standard Dutch oven charcoal quantities and placement – 8 briquets underneath and 16 on top. Give the lid a partial turn every 15 minutes or so. As it gets close to the suggested cooking time, check the cake for doneness.

Serve and Enjoy Let the cooks serve the cake. It works best by spooning it directly from the Dutch oven into soup bowls or similar. Top with a generous squirt of whipped cream. It is best while still a bit warm but not so hot that it melts the whipped cream. In the unlikely event that there are leftovers, they make a great breakfast option.  This dessert has been tested regularly by 5th Agincourt Scouts and is approved by the Brownsea Gilwell Contingent
