WELCOME TO THE 2020 E&T INNOVATION AWARDS

This is our opportunity to recognise and celebrate the very best new innovations across the breadth of engineering and technology. These sectors are increasingly fast moving and our ability to innovate is essential to engineering a better world.

We recognise that this is a strange year for everyone and amid the growing uncertainty with Covid-19, we made the necessary switch from red carpet to virtual event so that we continue to showcase the passion, commitment and innovation in engineering and technology today.

As these awards show, engineering and technology are more important now than ever and the engineers and technicians who work across these sectors continue to solve many of the world’s greatest challenges. The IET has just started to celebrate its 150th anniversary year and we will be marking it by sharing the stories of these difference makers with the world.

We have made a number of exciting changes to this year’s awards. Previously known as the IET Innovation Awards, we have rebranded as the E&T Innovation Awards. E&T is the IET’s award-winning monthly magazine for professional engineers and we have aligned the content our members read and enjoy every day with a celebratory event recognising the amazing innovations happening around the world.

This year we have also introduced an Advisory Board to provide expert opinion and independent guidance, ensuring the E&T Innovation Awards remain current, relevant and engaging, with the purpose of celebrating the very best in innovation across engineering and technology.

We are committed to championing a progressive, diverse and inclusive sector and have introduced four new awards to celebrate the brilliance of people within engineering and technology - the Best Diversity and Inclusion Impact Award, Tech for Good Award, Global Challenge Award and the E&T Leader of the Year Award. We have received some remarkable entries covering a broad range of subjects and individuals. All the entries you will hear about today have the potential to make real improvements to modern society, demonstrating the innovation and imagination of engineers and technicians worldwide as they tackle economic and social challenges.

I congratulate all of the finalists and wish them the very best of luck – it is an achievement in itself to have reached this stage. Each award category has its own panel of judges who are all experts in their fields and have chosen the finalists and winners. Thank you to all our judges for giving their time to this worthwhile activity.

Thank you to our sponsors for their generous support, for which we are very grateful.

I hope you all enjoy the 2020 E&T Innovation Awards ceremony.

Fran Scott is the Science Content Developer at the Royal Institution and has been listed in The Progress 1000 London’s most influential people. A scientist by training and an engineer at heart, Fran uses her knowledge to entertain and excite audiences of stage and screen. She is best known for her playful (and often fiery) demonstrations on the CBBC show Absolute Genius with Dick and Dom.

Struck by the lack of female scientist role models on children’s TV, Fran set about changing that. After working behind-the-scenes for many years on hit programmes such as Richard Hammond’s Blast Lab, Bang Goes the Theory and Horizon, Fran then made the move to in-front of camera. She has since presented eight series for CBBC, six series for BBC Learning Zone, and one for BBC Worldwide. For Fran, science and entertainment is at the heart of what she does, and this seems to have struck a chord with those wanting informative and yet engaging factual programmes, with her shows becoming successes across the globe and receiving numerous recognitions including four BAFTA nominations, a JAPAN prize nomination and a RTS award.

Recently, Fran has been moving into more adult-focused programming, with More 4’s Department of

Complaints and the new series of Lego Masters for Channel 4. With her own production company, Great Scott! Productions, she writes and produces high-octane shows for clients such as Google for Education, Mishkat Science Centre, Siemens and National Grid. As the Science Content Producer at the Royal Institution, Fran also heads up the demonstration team in their world famous Christmas Lectures. Balancing entertainment with education, Fran manages to inject her demonstrations with narrative and humour to make them as enjoyable as they are informative, leading her to present with many well-known names including Richard Hammond, Prof. Robert Winston, Prof. Brian Cox, and of course, Dick and Dom!

Finally, Fran also writes science content for print, as columnist for both National Geographic Kids and The Week Junior, as well as contributing to Huffington Post.

Dr Shini Somara Mechanical Engineer, Presenter and Media Broadcaster

Engineers are passionate about finding solutions and Dr Shini Somara is no exception. She qualified as a Mechanical Engineer and Fluid Dynamicist early in her career, and her thirst for knowledge and curiosity sent her traveling around the globe discovering cutting-edge science, technology and innovation. Shini translates what she finds into inspiring and engaging television for all ages, and is a spirited advocate for the fascinating work in pushing the boundaries of scientific and technological progress.

Dr Shini Somara translates cutting-edge science into warm-hearted and engaging television. She has always enjoyed demystifying the secrets behind pioneering technology and innovation. Her work can be seen on a variety of television networks including the BBC, BBC World News, BBC America, Sky and Discovery and PBS Digital Studios. Shini is now based in London, where she produces and reports for CGTN Europe. Between 2013-2016, Shini hosted TechKnow for Al Jazeera America from Los Angeles.

Shini’s fascination for innovation is insatiable and diverse. She has reported on subjects including Dark Matter Detection, Quantum Computing, Climate Change, and Nuclear Fusion. Shini feels most comfortable putting herself in the middle of an experiment or interacting with the technology to provide a far more effective explanation, as seen on explainer videos for Dyson and The Okay, but How Show for Sprint Telecom Business. Shini hosted Crash Course: Physics (2016) and Crash Course:

Engineering (2018) for PBS Digital. She is passionate about enthusing people into STEM.

Shini began her career as a mechanical engineer from Brunel University (London), completing a Bachelors of Engineering (BEng(Hons)) and then an Engineering Doctorate (EngD). Shini specialised in Fluid Dynamics, where algorithms and computers simulate how gases and liquids flow. This expertise enables engineers to better design aircraft wings and Formula1 cars for example.

Concerned with the lack of women in STEM subjects, Shini has also launched a weekly podcast called Scilence in 2018, which features many of the female scientists she has met throughout her career. Scilence provides a safe place for women to share their experiences and wisdom in navigating careers in traditionally male-dominated industries. During her speech at the United Nations in February 2017 for ‘Women and Girls in Science’ day, Shini highlighted the importance of role-models and is an Imperial College Mentor for female students in engineering.

OUTSTANDING INNOVATION IN FUTURE POWER & ENERGY AWARD

Sponsored by National GridNational Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) owns and maintains the high-voltage electricity transmission network in England and Wales. That includes over 7,200 kilometres of overhead line, 2,280 kilometres of underground cable and 346 substations.

We move electricity from where it’s generated, down the ‘motorway’ of the electricity system, to our direct customers and to the distribution companies who deliver that power to homes and businesses. We play a vital role in connecting millions of people to the energy they use, safely, reliably and efficiently

Through transformational engineering, we are helping our country to achieve its green targets, including by ensuring our network gives fair access to cleaner sources of energy. The transition to a low carbon economy is one of the defining issues of the 21st century, and we can’t make a bigger difference in today’s, or tomorrow’s, world than to create a road to net zero.

This award recognises an organisation who has rolled out an initiative which contributes to building a more diverse and inclusive engineering and technology culture, and whose work has helped make the technology industry more accessible to people from traditionally under-represented groups.

BTBT’s TechWomen programme – giving women the tools they need to compete in a traditionally male-dominated industry

This programme is designed to help women achieve their personal and professional goals. The key objectives were to increase career progression and release women’s untapped potential, to create an inclusive environment where women can thrive alongside their male colleagues and to help achieve BT’s gender ambitions of a 50% female workforce by 2030.

Emerson Innovations Portal – Your idea matters

A multi-disciplinary team has created a new process and toolset to capture and deploy innovative ideas. The impact of this Portal is company-wide with ideas relating to all aspects of operations, new product development or manufacturing initiatives to name a few. Ideas from all levels of the organisation are assessed individually by managers and the Innovation Council alike. Outstanding suggestions are recognised and publicly awarded.

Oldalone UK Click & Connect 4 All

Adapting Virtual Learning (VL), brain based learning (BBL), ICT-based managed learning environment (MLE), Assessment for all (AfL), and natural linguistic programming (NLP) have produced powerful teaching/learning for this specific group of older people from underprivileged background, whose low literacy and self-esteem issues have acted as a barrier for them to join mainstream education. This method, gave students a sense of empowerment and autonomy, increasing their confidence, while enhancing their communication skills, promoting social interaction and breading the way for a faster effective and enjoyable learning experience.
