Human Resources
Application Requirements Virtual American Virtual upholds multiple requirements for all members. Prior to registration the applicant must meet the following requirements.
• Own a legal copy of either FS2004 or FSX • Have a valid email address • Hold a VATSIM CID • Must be at least 13 years of age • Has the ability to download the necessary software • Has read this manual in its entirety
If the former requirements have been fulfilled, the applicant is to complete the application form and initial examination found on the Virtual American website to the best of their ability. Once submitted the management will review it and inform the applicant of their decision within 24 to 48 hours. If the applicant is not eligible for hire, they will be sent a letter expressing the reasons why they have not been hired. If the applicant is hired, they will be sent a welcome packet and an introductory letter to Virtual American. The pilot then has 14 calendar days to complete the following:
• Introduce themselves on the company forums • Download a copy of VAACARS • File a PIREP
Transfer Hours Virtual American will recognize up to 50% of the hours previously flown by the new pilot given that they provide a link to their hours during the application process. The pilot will not be able to get credit for any transfer hours after the application is approved. Please note that transfer hours will NOT count towards promotion.
Active Requirements In order to stay as an active member at Virtual American virtual, every pilot is required to complete and PIREP at least one (1) flight every thirty (30) calendar

days. If the Pilot does not complete the requirement they can be terminated without further warning.
Application Process During the application process, each applicant will be given an entrance exam. The entrance exam will determine where the applicant starts their career at Virtual American. Those with little to no experience may start their careers as a Regional First Officer, while those with a greater knowledge of aviation may start out as a First Officer in the Narrow Body category. If a pilot chooses to start in the Narrow Body category, the entrance exam will be harder to reflect their choice. If a pilot fails the Narrow Body entrance exam, they will be placed in the Regional Pilot rank as a First Officer.
Advancement Pilots interested in advancing from one aircraft rank to the next will be required to complete the minimum number of legs as outlined in this document and complete a short, open-‐book exam assigned to them by the HR department. If they successfully complete this exam with a score of over 80% they will be assigned their new rating, if the pilot fails this exam they will be required to wait twenty-‐four (24) hours prior to being able to re-‐take the exam.
LOA Virtual American realizes that pilots have real world obligations and cannot always meet flight requirements. It is because of the latter that Virtual American allows Pilots to take a temporary Leave of Absence valid up to ninety (90) calendar days. In order to request a Leave of Absence the Pilot must fill out the LOA form located under the Corporate tab in the Pilot Center. Once the LOA has expired the Pilot has thirty (30) calendar days to either reapply for a LOA or file at least one PIREP, if neither of the latter are completed by the specified time the crewmember faces termination.
Termination Virtual American is dedicated to providing a great experience for every pilot as long as they are able to follow the rules stated in the Standard Operating Procedures. It is unfortunate that Virtual American will need to terminate pilots at one point or the other, if the latter were to happen the Pilot will be mailed with the reasons for their termination. Some of the most common reasons are listed below.
• Invalid Email Address
[VIRTUAL AMERICAN AIRLINES STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES 11
Copyright © 2014 Virtual American.
• Falsifying Application Information • Falsifying PIREP’s • Inappropriate conduct in the FORUMS or the VATSIM network. • Failure to submit a PIREP within fourteen (14) days of hire • Failure to submit a PIREP to remain in Active Standing
Communications Virtual American encourages the communication between staff and pilots and between pilots and pilots. This is the reason why we have created the Company Forums where pilots are more than welcome and encouraged to participate. Every once in a while staff will also need to email the Pilot for different reasons, therefore we have also stated the email requirements below.
Email Each pilot at Virtual American is required to maintain a valid email address. If pilot changes their email address they are required to update their Virtual American Pilot Center profile within 30 days of the change.
Forum Pilots are required to register on the company forums using their Pilot ID followed by the first and last name. i.e. “AAL100 John Doe” All communications supported by Virtual American are under specific guidelines. These guidelines are in place to guarantee the best experience for every member. The guidelines are listed below:
• Profane language may not be used at any time • The use of racial, sexist, economic or derogative remarks towards any person
is strictly prohibited. • Comments against any religion are not to be used at any time. • The transfer of illegal files is prohibited. • The discussion of committing an illegal action is prohibited. • Any other action deemed inappropriate by an administrator.

Rank At Virtual American, we stress the importance of completing flight “legs” as opposed to the number of hours a pilot accumulates. With this being said, a pilot will be required to fly 10 legs in the program they are hired into. Once the first 10 legs are completed, a pilot will be given a short quiz and a checkride, the checkride will consist of a simple flight in the new category, the goal of the checkride is to demonstrate the applicant is capable of handling the aircraft and the advanced level of expertise required for the promotion. Once a pilot passes the quiz and checkride, they will be promoted to Captain in that rank and will need to fly 10 legs as a Captain in their current rank in order to be promoted to the next rank.

Aircraft in the pilots current rank are the only ones that will count towards promotion. For example, as a Narrow Body pilot, only flights with aircraft in that rank will be counted towards your next promotion.

Aircraft Substitutions While aircraft substitutions are permitted there are some guidelines pilots need to abide by
• Aircraft substitutions are only allowed within aircraft in the same rank as that of the initially scheduled aircraft
o E.g. – B737 is substituted for A320 • Aircraft substitutions are only allowed within aircraft of the same airline
o E.g. An American B77W Can not be substituted by any aircraft outside of the American Airlines fleet
Retro Fleet
Virtual American honors the history and legacy of it’s real world counterpart, as so pilots are allowed to fly retired aircraft (retro fleet) on any scheduled flights as long as they abide by the following limitations:
• Regional Captains – Turbo Props, Light Jet Aircraft an Twin Engine Jets with capacity of under 150 seats.
• Narrow Body Captain – Jet Aircraft with less than four engines with capacity of under 200 seats and MTOW less than 450,000LBS.
• Wide Body Captain – All Retro Fleet except MD11 and B747 • Extra Wide Body Captain – All Retro Fleet
Senior Captain The rank of Senior Captain will be awarded to any staff member who retires in good standing with the airline. The rank of Senior Captain will also be awarded to those pilots that go above and beyond the normal duties as a pilot. Senior Captains will be nominated by the general pilot population on a semi-‐ annual basis and voted by staff.
Limitations Virtual American serves dozens of destinations both domestic and international; some of these destinations and procedures pose difficulties to pilots, because of these difficulties Virtual American finds it necessary to restrict these destinations to

only pilots who demonstrate adequate experience. Experience will be demonstrated by completing a checkout exam with a minimum score of 80%.
• ETOPS • Benito Juarez International Airport (ICAO: MMMX) • Washington Reagan International Airport (ICAO: KDCA) • Key West International Airport (ICAO: KEYW) • Aspen-‐Pitkin County International Airport (ICAO: KASE) • Eagle County Regional Airport (ICAO: KEGE) • Telluride Regional Airport (ICAO: KTEX) • Princess Juliana International Airport (ICAO: TNCM) • Toncontin International Airport (ICAO: MHTG) • El Alto International Airport (ICAO: SLLP)
Flight Tracking Virtual American exclusively uses VAACARS for the tracking of flights. It is located in the “Downloads” link under the Corporate section of the Pilot Center.
Bidding Virtual American uses a bidding system for pilots to select their flights. Once the pilot has browsed through the schedule and selected a flight, they can bid on it. Once a flight has been bid the pilot can click “LOAD BID” on VAACARS and the flight information will be imported, then fill out the empty altitude, route and VATSIM fields, click on “START LOG” and the pilot can commence their flight.
PIREPS There are two ways in which a Virtual American pilot can file a Pilot Report (PIREP), through VAACARS or manually. Once the pilot has reached their destination gate and shut down the engines, they can click on “STOP LOG” followed by “SEND LOG” on VAACARS and they will be ready for the next flight. If the pilot forgets to start or does not use VAACARS then they are required to manually file a PIREP and include either the FSPASSENGERS log or a link to the VATAWARE/VATSATS page proving the flight was actually flown in the PIREP comments forum. Without one of the latter two elements the flight will not be approved. Some of the other reasons why a PIREP will not be approved are as follows:
• PIREPS with a landing rate of over 700FPM • PIREPS with a SIM RATE of over 1X • PIREPS which show an overspeed or stall condition occurring several times
throughout the flight • PIREPS with in-‐flight refueling • PIREPS flown with the wrong aircraft
[VIRTUAL AMERICAN AIRLINES STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES 16
Copyright © 2014 Virtual American.
Emergencies and Diversions In order to always uphold realism Virtual American will approve PIREPS with emergency diversion conditions that do not allow the pilot to arrive at the destination or perform an emergency maneuver/landing. The PIREPS will still need to follow the conditions outlined in the PIREPS section of this handbook. In order to log the flight the pilot can either fly two segments or keep VAACARS running in between segments. It is important to always add a comment to the PIREP to explain the situation. If the pilot elects to file two different PIREP’s the first one will be placed on hold until the flight is completed to the original destination.
Expectations Virtual American Virtual holds high expectations for all pilots; therefore Virtual American has laid forth a set of recommended guidelines for all pilots to follow when flying. While these are not considered requirements, repeated disregard for these expectations will result in a rejected PIREP:
• Pilots are to use charts for their flights • Pilots are to use the correct livery for their flights • Pilots are to properly fuel for the planned flight
Waiver/Charter/Ferry Flights Virtual American Virtual tries to use realism for all its operations, but from time to time there will be special waivers in terms of equipment restrictions/ranks. If one is available, the information will be posted on the forums and the flights will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis.
[VIRTUAL AMERICAN AIRLINES STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES 17

Pilot Shop and Rewards Virtual American offers rewards and a Pilot Shop where all pilots can use accumulated miles to buy landing rate passes to approve a PIREP with a high-‐rate landing, special repaints, charter flights, special banners and ribbons and much more. Accumulated miles are based on the mileage listed for each flight in the timetable.

VATSIM Flying over VATSIM creates a much more realistic experience, because the pilot actually is talking to a human Air Traffic Controller, who understands different requests that default ATC will not understand such as vectors and altitude restrictions. It also could be used for proof of flight, should ACARS malfunction. Membership to VATSIM is free; just point the browser to http://www.VATSIM.net. There are many resources to get anyone started, and knowledgeable staff that have been on VATSIM for a few years. The resource that is commonly used for new pilots on VATSIM is the VATSIM Pilot Resource Center, located at http://www.VATSIM.net/PRC. Once the new pilot creates a VATSIM ID, they can begin logging flights for Virtual American over the VATSIM network! Flying on the VATSIM network is NOT mandatory. If a Pilot is to perform a flight on the VATSIM network they are required to do the following
• Use the callsign XXX___ followed by the digits of the flight number o i.e. AAL101 o i.e. BAW101
• Properly fill out the Flight Plan form • Insert at least the following in the Comments section • CALLSIGN = www.virtualamerican.org

complains about a pilot that ignores Air Traffic Instruction, or doesn’t seem to understand how to fly, the pilot will immediately be inserted into a 30 minute session with the Training Director do discuss how to fly on VATSIM. If the pilot still shows that they ignore Air Traffic Control, or disregards rules, further disciplinary action will be taken. Virtual American pilots shall use the real world flight number when operating on the VATSIM network. The call sign is also dependent on the carrier including regional connection/Envoy flights and codeshare flights. Pilots may use their pilot ID number as an alternative to the flight number if the flight number is already taken online or if they are participating in a group flight or event.

TeamSpeak TeamSpeak is a program that lets pilots connect and communicate with each other. Our TeamSpeak server is hosted 24 hours a day, however we are required to enforce rules so there are no legal issues against the host. The following is not permitted in the TeamSpeak server:
• Vulgar language that could be offensive, even if not directed towards anybody will not be tolerated and the pilot will be placed on a one-‐month suspension. If the problem does not get corrected after the second attempt, the pilot will be removed from the Virtual American rosters with a no-‐rehire notation to their name.
• Piracy of any kind discussed on the TeamSpeak server or in ACARS chat will result in an immediate one-‐month suspension, if warranted removal from the Virtual Airline and properly submitted to the authorities. There will be ZERO warnings on this subject.
• No one will be granted Server Admin rights except the CEO. Channel admin rights will be granted to lower staff depending on their position.
• To download TeamSpeak point your browser to http://www.teamspeak.com. Make sure to download the Client, not the Server. All pilots will be automatically registered for TeamSpeak upon joining Virtual American, you can check the details under the Pilot Center – Corporate.
All pilots shall log into the Teamspeak serve with their Virtual American Callings and their full name. Example: AAL001 Orville Wright
