STARTING BLOCKSVIRGINIA TECH INVITATIONAL¢ After opening the 2013 indoor season last

week at the Kentucky Invitational, the University of Tennessee track & field team will be back in ac-tion this week, as the Vols and Lady Vols head to Blacksburg, Va., to compete in the annual Virginia Tech Invitational on Friday and Saturday.¢ The 15-team meet gets underway at Rec-

tor Field House on Friday at 5 p.m., with the first event of day two slated for an 11 a.m. start. One of the fastest in the nation, Virginia Tech’s track is a 200-meter, Mondo-surfaced, banked course.¢ In addition to meet host Virginia Tech, Duke,

North Carolina State, UNC Charlotte, Coastal Caro-lina, Concord, Davidson, East Carolina, High Point, North Carolina A&T, North Carolina Central, Rad-ford, Liberty, Richmond and the Big Orange are expected to be on hand in Blacksburg. The Hok-ies and NC State men’s teams are ranked 14th and 17th, respectively.

LOOKING BACK¢ Tennessee matched last season’s total by pro-

ducing five event wins, including three on the final day, in the team’s seventh-straight season-open-ing trip to the Kentucky Invitational last week. The Vols got the weekend off to a good start on Friday night, placing 1-2 in the distance medley relay and winning the weight throw competition.¢ In his first collegiate meet, rookie Cameron

Brown concluded the weight throw preliminary round with a record-setting 61-foot, 8 1/2-inch (18.81m) toss on his third attempt to best former Vol Richard Wooten’s indoor rookie record of 60-5 (18.41).¢ Lady Vol senior Nijgia Snapp got the Big Or-

ange off to a quick start Saturday by defending her women’s 800-meter title, crossing the line in 2:09.68, a mark that currently stands as the sixth-fastest in the young 2013 campaign. Snapp’s team-mate and fellow indoor All-American Kianna Ruff followed close behind, placing third in a time of 2:11.19, which also ranks in the top 10 nationally.¢ Freshman pole vaulter Jacob Blankenship

highlighted day two’s action by eclipsing a person-al-best 17-8 1/2 (5.40m) to win the event, coming up just shy of the UT freshman indoor record clip of 18-0 1/2 set by Olympic silver medalist Law-rence Johnson in 1993. Blankenship currently has the sixth-best mark in the nation and the second-highest performance from a freshman this season.
