VDOT Project Designation B79 was a complete bridge replacement project on Rt. 743 over the North Fork Rivanna River in Albemarle County, Virginia. The new bridge installation generally consisted of demolition of an old steel bridge structure with the installation of a new truss bridge, the installation of new concrete abutments, associated grading & drainage, aphalt paving, drainage, traffic signs, traffic control, and pedestrian access. FCE was able to created a great partnership with VDOT along with the general public on this project. Close and careful inpection and coordiation of subcontractors was key to the succes of this project. Proper safety measures during the shutdown, construction, and reopening of the bridge for traffic and pedestrian access were a major concern, but with the help of our third party safety consultant Safety United everything went smoothly.

The Neuse River Greenway Project was a DB tender for the North Carolina Department of Transportation. This 3.7 mile section is part of the planned Neuse River Greenway system which runs from the Falls Lake Dam in Wake County and extends into Johnston County. The construction of this trail corridor will be incorporated into the Mountain to Sea Trail, an ambitious trail/park extending from Murfreesboro in the western North Carolina mountains to Jockey’s ridge on the North Carolina coast. Louis Berger produced a trail alignment, drainage and erosion control plans, raised boardwalk and timber structure applications for low lying areas and a concept for a 200 foot clear span structure over the Neuse River. Louis Berger’s duties also included: utility relocation plans, staging area and construction access concepts and canoe/kayak access consideration. The DB team was responsible for the design and construction of all structures necessary to complete the project, including to a pedestrian bridge over the Neuse River, south of Covered Bridge Road including the design of all storm drainage design and construction, bridge survey and culvert survey reports, and Federal Emergency Management Agency compliance. A context sensitive design approach was taken to preserve the overall character and minimize disturbance to the natural environment surrounding the trail. Louis Berger staff went to great length in order to ensure access to all with a fully ADA compliant design, given terrain challengers and physical site constraints. Office Location(s) : Raleigh, North Carolina Firm’s Role : Lead Designer for the DB Team

h. Narrative describing the Work Performed by the Firm identified as the Lead Designer for this procurement. Include the office location(s) where the design work was performed and whether the firm was the prime designer or a subconsultant.

The demolition of the Apex Street Bridge and greenway trail connection project was part of an “On-Call” contract to provide engineering services for the City of Durham. The Apex Street Bridge crosses the American Tobacco Trail (ATT), which is a high profile greenway in the Research Triangle. The project is in an established residential area in the City and the bridge was both functionally and structurally obsolete. The bridge had previously been open to vehicular traffic and was reduced to serve as a pedestrian-only bridge due to its state of disrepair. Louis Berger was responsible for the design, coordination, and construction inspection services for the proposed greenway trail connection and demolition of the Apex Street Bridge over the existing ATT. Louis Berger’s duties included: utility relocation coordination, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant trail connection design, public workshops, inspection, and post-design services. An extensive phasing plan was developed in order to keep ATT open during all phases of construction. A context sensitive approach was taken in order to preserve the overall atmosphere of the historic neighborhoods bordering the area and to share information for stakeholder acceptance. Public involvement of this sensitive project was critical to its overall success. Louis Berger staff provided close attention to all details to ensure access to all with a fully ADA compliant design, given terrain challengers and physical site constraints.
