MLB4 AT A GLANCE• Virginia played three ranked foes (No. 2 Vanderbilt, No. 17 TCU & No. 24 Cal State Fullerton) in the inaugural MLB4 Collegiate Baseball Tournament in Scottdale, Ariz. to open the 2019 season.• It marked the first time in school history Virginia played three-ranked opponents to start a season and Vanderbilt was the highest ranked team to open the season since 2010 when it started up with a three-game series at No. 11 East Carolina.• Against Vanderbilt, an eight-run third inning doomed Virginia in a 15-9 loss in a game that aired live on MLB Network. On Saturday against TCU, the Cavaliers fell behind 7-0 after the first inning and could not recover. In the tournament finale, Cal State Fullerton scored three runs in the top of the ninth to wipe away a 5-3 Virginia advantage.• Virginia is winless through its first four games for the first time since 2003 when it dropped its first three games at Auburn.

FRESH START• 2018 marked the first time in Brian O’Connor’s tenure that Virginia failed to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. The streak of 14-straight regionals was the fourth-longest in college baseball going into last season. STOPPER OF THE YEAR WATCH LIST- Virgina reliever Andrew Abbott, a freshman All-American last season was on the initial NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award Watch list, annually giving to the country’s top relief pitcher.-Abbott pitched almost exclusively out of the bullpen with 23 relief appearances-His 74 strikeouts as a reliever were the third most in the ACC and sixth most in the ACC

PRESEASON RANKINGS-SS Tanner Morris, a draft eligible sophomore is the No. 49 overall prospect on Baseball America’s Top. 50 College Prospect list.-According to D1Baseball.com Nate Eikhoff ranked No. 49 on its top 100 senior list-Cam Simmons (#19), Tanner Morris (#24), and Noah Murdock( #27) were included on the D1Baseball’s Top ACC prospects for the 2019 Draft.

O’CONNOR’S TENURE WITH TEAM USA• Virginia head coach Brian O’Connor served as the pitching coach for U.S. Collegiate National team this past summer.• Current LSU head coach Paul Maineri, served as the manager for Team USA this summer.• O’Connor spent nine seasons working as an assistant on Mainieri’s staff at Notre Dame from 1995-2003. • While working together, the Irish posted an overall record of 399-160-1, won six conference championships and made six trips to the NCAA Tournament. • O’Connor’s college coach at Creighton, Jim Hendry, will also be on staff as the bench coach.
