NEWSLETTER VIRGINIA ASSOCIATION OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE EDUCATORS PRESIDENT’S CORNER B y the time we are reading this newsletter, we will be further into the economic recession and scrambling to maintain our own professional and personal standings. Clearly the economic downturn has had significant impact on the delivery of criminal justice education in most academic institutions. I know that last year many members of the Virginia Association of Criminal Justice Educators were not able to attend the annual conference due to funding cuts and reductions. Without doubt, getting access to travel funds for this year’s annual conference will be equally if not even more difficult. As we are prioritizing our budget expenditures for this fiscal year, I hope that many of our members will be able to somehow pull the funds together to attend our annual conference which will be held at the Holiday Inn Select in Richmond on October 02 -04, 2009. We, as members of the Virginia Association of Criminal Justice Educators, have as our mission to “advance, inspire, and promote the highest quality and practices of criminal justice education to students Stability and Consistency: Surviving Recessionary Times and practitioners in the community colleges, colleges, and universities within the State of Virginia; to foster communication and support among all criminal justice educators in Virginia; to inform the membership of pending (or possible) changes in criminal justice programs or agencies among the post-secondary educational institutions in Virginia; to articulate a unified voice for official communication with other educational agencies, organizations, and/or the Commonwealth of Virginia; and to enhance the quality of life-long educational experiences and opportunities for our criminal justice students.” The VACJE mission is articulated and operationalized within the development and structure of the VACJE annual meeting. Vice President Nicolle Parsons- Pollard is currently working to finish the agenda of the VACJE annual meeting which includes speakers to discuss assessment, outcomes, planning, and certification of criminal justice educational programs. (See Vice President Parsons-Pollard’s report and request for ideas and thoughts) The information to be shared at the VACJE annual conference will offer distinguished opportunities to discuss and exchange information that will enhance the development, delivery, and accountability of criminal justice education within the Commonwealth of Virginia. I suspect that if one needs justification for expending funds for conferences, this topical, essential, and maybe even critical information obviously has direct impact on the delivery of criminal justice education programs. President’s Corner

Campus safety, security under microscope

Greetings VACJE Members: You may recall in the

Summer 2007 VACJE newsletter (President’s Corner “We Are All Hokies”) I had committed to the following:

(1) attend a virtual forum on “Advanced Violence Risk Assessment,

(2) participate in a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training class,

(3) lend support to campus security personnel and

(4) watch for “red fl ags” (campus danger signs) that could lead to a disaster.

Well, I’m three for four. Although I have not been able to locate a CERT training class, I’ll keep looking! The December “violence risk assessment” course presented by James Cawood was excellent and drove home the point that some folks out there in our society might just be thinking that they will have to kill you in order to control you.

If you will e-mail me, I’ll be glad to send you a 28-page document, furnished at the virtual seminar, which includes an Association of Threat Assessment Professionals (ATAP) “Model Violence Risk Assessment Process.”

Linda Jones was featured March 20 on the popular A&E series “Crime 360.”

A&E producers will provide viewers with an inside view of Cleveland Police Department’s homicide unit.

One aspect of A&E's production is their use of a 360 degree Lyca Camera which logs various crime scenes.

Jones can be seen processing crime scene evidence. By the time this newsletter is published, Linda will have “come and gone"”from Paramount Studio to see fi rst-hand

the proverbial “fi lm cuttings on the production studio fl oor.”

The title of the A&E show featuring crime scene and homicide personnel from the Cleveland PD is “Crime 360.” If you go to A&E’s Web site to view “Crime 360,” you can watch lead homicide detective

Wally Everett and Detective Mike Smith work a crime scene where a body lies hidden between some hedges and the porch of the victim's grandmother’s house. The victim, a male, is face down.

DOnalD GRuBBProfessor Emeritus Donald Grubb, Annandale Campus adjunct faculty, suffered a fatal heart attack at his home in Howard, Colorado the first week of June. Grubb is survived by his wife, Anne, three children and several grandchildren. After retirement from NOVA, he worked as an educator at a Colorado Prison and served as an adjunct faculty member in sociology and criminal justice at Colorado Mountain College at the Salida Campus. Anne and Don loved their log home in the Colorado mountains. Grubb found great joy entertaining his grandchildren (and those of us who visited from NOVA), working with his horses, fly fishing and, each fall, hunting elk in the mountains of Western Colorado. At one time Don served as a VACJE trustee. He will truly be missed.

Fall 2009 - VaCJe annual meetingRichmond, VA • October 2-4, 2009 • Theme: “Assessing What We Do”Greetings

Words cannot express how excited I am about the upcoming VACJE annual meeting. The meeting will take place at the Holiday Inn Select in Richmond on October 2-4, 2009. The theme of this year’s meeting is “Assessing What We Do.” Our guest speakers for the event will be Drs. Laura Moriarty and Mittie D. Southerland. Dr. Moriarty is a Professor of Criminal Justice and Vice Provost for Academic and Faculty Affairs at Virginia Commonwealth University. She has published over 65 scholarly articles, book chapters, and non-referred articles and 7 books including her most recent book, Assessing Criminal Justice/Criminology Education, A Resource Handbook for Educators and Administrators (with Barbara Peat). Dr. Southerland is the Executive Director of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS) and Professor Emeritus of Murray State University. Her research focuses on criminal justice education; administration, management, and supervision; and organizational environments and change in policing. Currently, Dr. Southerland is responsible for the ACJS Certification of criminal justice/criminology programs.

Our meeting will explore assessment, certification and accreditation. With that said, we’d like to get your input in planning the focus of our sessions. As you might imagine, different universities and colleges have very different ideas about how to reach our overarching goal – educating students. I am soliciting feedback from each of you so that we can ensure that our dialog touches on the problems and concerns that our institutions face. Your concerns might relate to the steps in doing assessment, what ACJS certification is all about, using assessment instruments, evaluating learning outcomes, using rubrics, strategic planning and so much more! As you can see the focus of our meeting could be all over the place – that’s why your feedback is so important. Feel free to email your thoughts and ideas.

NEW BUSINESS:

Discussion ensued about the use of the period between the meeting and the annual dinner. It was decided that this period be used for professional development wherein member can present papers.

John mentioned that Emma Cox of the College of Justice and Safety at Eastern Kentucky University has not been in contact with him. He thinks that the university has cut back on travel expenses. He will call and chat with her before the next meeting.

FAMOUS CRIME AUTHOR PAYS VISITBrian C. Flick , Associate Professor of Police Science and Program Head of Administration of Justice at Piedmont Virginia Community College, poses with Jack Levin, nationally renowned authority on hate crimes and serial killers. Levin addressed students and others at Piedmont Virginia Community College recently. There was an excellent turnout for this prominent educator and author.

By JOHN WILT

Jones featured on show that’s all about crime
