Dive deeper: vafest.org/michelangelo FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS WHAT MAKES THIS EXHIBIT INTERESTING? There are many interesting aspects of Michelangelo — A Different View that make it an unforgettable and unique experience. Never before have the Vatican Museums given an official license for such an exhibit, and did so with the help of the exhibit’s scientific director, Prof. Dr. Arnold Nesselrath, director from the Vatican Museum. Using state-of-the-art technology, the exhibit includes 48 magnificent images from the Sistine Chapel, brilliantly recreated with superb detail on a special, delicate fabric, and several on a world-class Alu-Dibond, a material trusted by modern photographers. The careful photo-real precision brings some of the greatest art ever made to a completely new setting — right here at home! For a truly “different view,” the chapel’s stunning ceiling is placed flat on the floor, allowing for an intimacy no visitor to the Sistine Chapel can experience, making this exhibit a once-in-a-lifetime experience. DID YOU REPRODUCE EVERYTHING INSIDE THE SISTINE CHAPEL? The exhibit focuses on Michelangelo’s contributions to the Sistine Chapel, including the artwork from the ceiling and Last Judgment. By bringing the artwork closer, we hope the visitor will be able to appreciate these famous masterpieces from a new perspective. IS THE ARTWORK IN THE EXHIBIT THE SAME SIZE AS THE ORIGINAL IN THE VATICAN? Because the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel is curved, these reproductions are as close to the original size as possible. However, our mission was never to copy the entire ceiling, so some of the bordering elements such as the Ignudi angels and other framing devices are not included. It was necessary to crop some of the images in order to fit them into the display design, but rest assured: all key images from the Chapel are included in the exhibit. ARE TICKETS AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE AT THE EXHIBIT? Yes. Tickets may be purchased when you come to the exhibit. Credit cards only, no cash or checks accepted. The exhibit is held in MacArthur Center, 300 Monticello Avenue, Norfolk, August 7-30, during Center hours: Tuesday- Saturday 11AM-7pPM and Sunday 12PM–6PM, closed Mondays. You may also buy your tickets in advance online at vafest.org/michelangelo or by phone at 282-2822. DO I NEED TO RESERVE A TIME TO VISIT THE EXHIBIT? Yes, tickets must be reserved for a specific entry time. Entry times will run every 15 minutes with limited number of guests per entry to allow for social distancing. Anticipated exhibit viewing time is approximately one hour.

ADIFFERENTVIEW

Every year, four million people visit the Sistine Chapel in Rome to admire the beautiful ceiling frescoes by Michelangelo. In partnership with Visit Baton Rouge, the Raising Cane’s River Center will be bringing these masterpieces to Baton Rouge, April 1-30, 2020. MICHELANGELO - A DIFFERENT VIEW offers the unique opportunity to look at his timeless work in a different way.

The sculptor and painter Michelangelo spent four years of his life on scaffolding under the vaulted ceiling of the Sistine Chapel painting probably the most famous frescoes in the world with his interpretation of the history of creation. Prior to this, a simple starry sky had adorned the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.

Faced by the challenge presented by the structural architecture, he developed outstanding painting techniques, setting new standards for future generations of painters – up to the present day.

MICHELANGELO - A DIFFERENT VIEW presents a very different picture of Michelangelo’s works: the exhibition shows photo-mechanically reproduced copies almost in original size and in a way that invites visitors to look at them in a contemplative and at the same time enthusiastic manner. Where you have to look up in the Sistine chapel, in the exhibition the masterpieces are on the ground, so that visitors can walk around the gigantic masterpieces, giving a unique “different view" of Michelangelo’s masterpieces.

Under the license of the Vatican Museums, the images were reproduced and transferred to special fabric webs. This technique allows a true-to-life reproduction and gives a glimpse of the works, which, apart from Michelangelo, has so far been given to only a few people.
