• She was born June 7,1909 in Westfield , New Jersey
• Apgar enjoyed playing violin and other instruments ,and became a skilled musician.
Early Life
FACTS• Apgar was one of the few woman to
complete her graduation during the 1930s.
• She graduated form Columbia’s College of Physicians and Surgeons (1933) .
• In1937 she successfully completed a residency in surgery at Columbia.
FACTS
• Dr. Allen Whipple, the chair of surgery at Columbia refused to let Virginia practice surgery because she was a woman.
• She finished her training in anesthesia and returned to Columbia in 1938.
• She was also named the director of anesthesia
INVENTION
• Virginia Apgar is best known for developing the Apgar Newborn Scoring System (better known as the “ Apgar Score “) which is a simple, quick method for judging newborn viability.
