DearFriends,We recognized our 170th anniversary this year and spent some time reflecting on our heritage – our traditions, achievements, and beliefs that are part of our history. Since 1846, Virginia Home for Boys and Girls (VHBG) has been dedicated to responding to the unique and ever changing needs of children and families in crisis. As we reflected on the past, it was impressive to see the important path that led us to where we are today and where we’re going in the future.

Founded as the Richmond Male Orphan Society, VHBG was originally dedicated to meeting the needs of young boys who had been abandoned by their families. Providing a refuge of hope, VHBG continued to grow and evolve over the years as the needs of our community changed. When the practice of placing children in orphanages declined and the foster care and adoption systems grew, many children who had experienced trauma, abuse, neglect, or some other sort of crisis were left needing more options.

VHBG filled this need by using the evidence-based Teaching-Family model of group home care with boys, and now girls too, who needed encouragement, protection, and a sense of belonging that come from supportive adult relationships in a healthy family environment. A growing demand for alternative educational resources led us to establish the John G. Wood School on our campus, which today is a premier choice for Virginia’s youth who are unable to be successful in their public school. As knowledge about the prevalence and consequences of adverse childhood experiences increased, VHBG dedicated on-site therapeutic resources to encompass the children we serve, both on and off-campus, with an outpatient counseling clinic that includes mentoring and psychiatric care.

Teaching resilience-building skills has always been at the forefront of care at VHBG and our own resilience is evident in our history. Over the past 170 years, we rebuilt our residential program and added girls; we tore down cottages and built Teaching-Family Homes; we expanded educational services from the dining hall basement to a state-of-the-art alternative school; and sharpened our focus on trauma-informed care. We’re an established part of Richmond’s history because of our flexibility to evolve to meet community needs.

But the most important reflection on this history, of course, is seen in the thousands of lives that have been uniquely impacted by the care, compassion, and commitment of donors like you, our staff, and Board members who have remained steadfast to the mission of strengthening and empowering children and families to achieve their greatest success.

We thank you for your generous support of our mission and for your belief that all children deserve a bright future.

Sincerely,

Claiborne Mason Kelly Boykin President 2016 Chair, Board of Governors

Unpackingour 170-yearhistory. BY CHRISTOPHER CAMPBELL

VHBG Program Development Manager (and VHBG Curator)

As VHBG embarked on an anniversary year, it became clear that someone needed to curate the vast amount of archival items

stashed around our campus. Falling under the ‘other duties as assigned’ category of my job description, I was honored to be the

one tapped for the job. It motivated me to become more deeply engaged with our alumni and gave me a new-found purpose for

recognizing the past.

The Virginia Home for Boys and Girlswas formed in 1846 under the name Richmond Male Orphan Society. Its formation stemmed from a desperate need to house and raise orphan boys in the Richmond, Virginia area. At the time, there was a Female Humane Society but not one for boys. The story goes that on one particularly cold evening a small, orphened boy knocked on the door of the Female Humane Society (today’s Memorial Foundation for Children). The headmistress at the time answered the door and was asked by the boy for pennies. The thought of this boy out on the streets of Richmond haunted the headmistress’ thoughts. Hers was a home for girls – shouldn’t there be a home for boys too? And from this simple ask and the headmistress’ desire to help, Virginia Home for Boys and Girls got its start.

Over the following 170 years, VHBG underwent many changes to meet the needs of the surrounding community. Three Richmond City addresses preceded the current Henrico County location. And changes in leadership, name, and the demographics of the children served never caused VHBG to sway away from the belief that every child deserves a sense of normalcy and family.

Over its 170 years, the Richmond Male Orphan Society evolved into the Richmond Home for Boys, the Virginia Home for Boys, and now Virginia Home for Boys and Girls.

Boxes of trophies, pictures, paintings, scrapbooks, signage, and print materials are plentiful. So my initial focus was just to gather all these materials. This was quite a large task on a 30+ acre campus with numerous buildings and storage spaces. I found items that no one even knew existed and items such as trophies from the 1930s that Alumni thought to be long lost. During my exploration of dust filled boxes I came across manuscripts and many articles written about VHBG. In a few bibliographies of these writings, I found mention of “the reading room” at the Virginia Historical Society. I was very happy to find that the Virginia Historical Society holds a great deal of VHBG’s history. This history comes in the form of board minutes, news articles, pictures,

expense reports, glass photo negatives, and alike. Boxes and boxes of items are all

very well organized and easy to access. My original intent in doing this project was to bring light to and celebrate VHBG’s 170 years of social impact. But what I learned along the way was that I loved

the history of the impact individuals

made at VHBG. Through my research at the Virginia Historical Society, I found that we had youth who left us for the Civil War and one in particular who was apprenticed as a gunsmith who lost his life in battle as one of Richmond’s finest sharpshooters.

One of the great mysteries of VHBG is Mary “Mimi” Cunningham. Mimi was the second wife of one of VHBG’s Superintendents, J. R. Gill, who later became an officer in the Planter’s

National Bank. After Mr. Gill’s death in 1885, Mimi was unanimously voted as the new superintendent. She was one of the most philanthropic leaders VHBG has ever seen. She once hand-wrote over 1,800 Christmas cards to “friends and family” of VHBG in an effort to raise money. She was known for her Honeymoon and Valentine train rides to Washington, D.C. where couples would pay for tickets with proceeds going directly to VHBG. She also engaged her very musical family in concerts as a means to raise money. To most, the boys were known as Mrs. Gill’s boys. But despite her long tenure and expansive efforts on VHBG’s behalf, there isn’t one picture or painting of Mimi to be found. So we invite anyone who can shed light on Mimi to contact us.

John and Bessie Wood, whose grandchildren I met this year were long-term VHBG superintendents. They saw numerous VHBG boys go off to serve in WWII and the letters of gratitude the boys wrote “home” stand testament to the impact the Woods had on them. We are in possession of several of these letters that I was able to share, along with photos

Hazelgrove, also known as “Mom and Pop.” Mom and Pop were co-superintendents starting in 1961 and served in that position for 17 years. They saw many young men through some very tough times and these men will tell you themselves how much better off they were having lived at VHBG under the care of Mom and Pop.

A few of these boys, now men in their 50s and 60s, got to see Mom and Pop

this past spring at a picnic held

of the Woods, with their grandchildren. Today on our campus, the John G. Wood Alternative School, named in their honor, proudly serves youth in kindergarten through grade 12.

Archived newsletters revealed that the Optimist Club of Richmond played a very active role in VHBG’s history. Optimist Club members visited VHBG frequently, played a major role during holidays, and took boys on trips. They, with many other members of the community, supported VHBG financially as well, enabling it to be more than just a bed for destitute young men, but a place where they had everything they needed to become good

citizens. The Optimists were responsible for bringing the beloved Tobacco Festival to Richmond to benefit VHBG. One year, singer and Hollywood actor Frank Sinatra was part of the festival’s entertainment and we have pictures of Mr. Sinatra with youth on our campus. That must have been an amazing treat and lasting memory for many boys.

We are also very fortunate to have living history in the way of Alumni who once lived in VHBG group homes or attended our school, as well as long tenured and impactful staff members who share their stories. This past year, I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Jackie and Bill

Another VHBG leader, Tod Balsbaugh who served for over 30 years as Executive Director, still acts as a sage resource to our organization today. Tod’s extraordinary memory for names, faces, and dates has been a huge help in identifying people in our countless boxes of old photos. But beyond identifying who people are, Tod can even tell me, in many cases, where people are today. One young man Tod guided to adulthood was Bobby Cockrill, an alumnus from the 1990s who now lives in California. Bobby was a speaker at our Band Together

fundraiser this fall. It was a ‘homecoming’ for Bobby who enjoyed reuniting with his college friends, driving around VHBG’s campus, and sharing his childhood stories. He says VHBG helped make him the successful businessman and family-man he is today.

Taking a genuine interest in someone’s life is what makes our motto “once family, always family” a proven statement. When alumni Manyang Reath Kher completed his

on campus. One of these alumni, Mike Creech, enjoyed a heartfelt and tearful reunion with the Hazelgroves. It had been 40 years since Mike had seen them or the campus. He was only 11 when he came under their care after unsuccessful attempts at foster care. Now a father with children in college, Mike says he became a responsible adult because of the care, stability, and family-like support he received at VHBG. studies at the University of Richmond

this spring, “home” is where he wanted to celebrate with a reception. He called VBHG and said, “I consider this place my home, can I come back?” We were happy to accommodate his wish and held his reception in our dinning hall. Today, we continue to nurture the children in our care by using the evidence-based Teaching-Family model. We’re helping to create long-lasting, good memories (personal history) as part of their healing process. For example, we’ve partnered with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce to provide a Quinceañera for a 15-year-old girl, and partnered with Southern States to develop a boy’s love of gardening. These are memories that last a lifetime and help lead to long-term success.

Taking a genuine interest in someone’s life is what makes our motto “once family, always family”a proven statement.

So, while we want to honor and preserve our ‘family’ history, we also want it to be shared – just like any family. Whether you are one of our alumni who wants to recall

memories of your youth, or someonewho wants to cherish the philanthropic efforts of your ancestors, we invite youto check out our archives. We’ve unpacked and hung pictures and paintings (some that date back to the late 1800s), we’ve got memorabilia in display cases, and we’ve organized materials into binders for easy perusing. We even have a video documentary on our website we hope you’ll watch.

With 170 years of history, we can’t begin to count the number of people who’ve had an impact on the children we’ve served. But it is these people we’d rather celebrate than the boxes of ‘things’ that are left behind. Our history, and the memorabilia we preserve just helps us remember that children in crisis will always need people who care.

For the last 24 years, Mr. Christmas, aka Frank Hudak, has adorned his home for Richmond’s Tacky Lights Tour to raise funds for VHBG. Beginning in October, the set-up time takes two months. Over 100 hours are spent every year on design layouts, electrical schematics, repairs and adding new items. He uses 85,000 lights in his display which make up over 40,000 watts and include 100 lighted figures and 4 miles of electrical wiring. In 2015, his total donation from the Christmas House was $7,028…bringing his total since 1991 to $110,000 for VHBG.

VHBG’s 27th Annual Golf Classic was held on June 17 at the Hunting Hawk Golf Club. The night before the tournament, an infamous June storm wreaked havoc on the region and caused great damage to property and power outages. But very patient attendees and dedicated grounds-keepers proved that electricity wasn’t needed to play golf. After a brief delay, the greens were cleared and golfers played to help raise $38,500 to support programs at VHBG.

“Because Family is Everything!”…that’s one of our slogans and you could literally seethat statement come to life at the fifth annual Youth Triathlon hosted by Endorphin Fitness on our campus. This year’s event attracted about 600 people…families banding together to cheer and encourage youth fitness. No matter what your family dynamic may be, feeling the love of a caring adult is something every child deserves. 125 youth athletes along with some of our VHBG kids swam four laps, biked six miles, and ran two miles to raise more than $14,000 for VHBG. But the feeling of triumph our kids gained by participating in the event was priceless.

In the fall of 2015 and the spring of 2016 our Auxiliary hosted card parties to benefit VHBG. More than 100 women gathered each time in the dining hall for Canasta, Mahjong, Bridge and various other card games. In addition to card playing, the ladies ran a boutique, silent auction, and raffle. The events raised nearly $7,000.

A sharingcommunity.

It’s safe to say that volunteering is part of VHBG’s present as well as its past. And it’s clear that while “how” people volunteer at VHBG may have changed throughout history, the desire to help children in crisis will always be a part of our legacy. We wish to express our heartfelt thanks to the hundreds of individuals who volunteer at VHBG by giving their time and talents to accomplish what we cannot do alone. From deep cleaning group homes, to painting picnic tables, to wrapping gifts for the holidays, to knitting with students, to sorting in-kind donations of clothes, and more. It’s a huge benefit to have the willingness of people in our community provide a helping hand. We appreciate your dedication!

A local artist and muralist, Hamilton Glass, collaborated with students at John G. Wood School to create geometric artwork that enhances the hallways of the school. Students painted the shapes that were sketched by Ham as he coached them on different painting techniques.

Virginia Home for Boys and Girls (VHBG) is a nonprofit organization. Nearly 50% of our budget is supported by philanthropic dollars, and community volunteers play a critical role in supporting the organization’s needs.

Sometimes, children come to us with nothing more than a small grocery bag of belongings. Because of generous donations, these children have choices and can select what they need from our beautifully displayed campus store. In addition, through a positive behavioral point system, our children can earn points that they can take to the store and use to buy clothes, shoes, and accessories. Banana Republic Short Pump and Stoney Point staff volunteer their time to sort donations and change out displays according to season.

There are 6 group homes for children and 5 other homes used for other purposes on our 30+ acre campus. That’s a lot of yard work! But Carmax cares about their neighbors and stepped up this year to wash, trim, rake, and haul brush for a good cause.

We’re proud to say that our campus looks like the neighborhood you’d want to live in thanks to volunteers from Long and Foster Realtors- Innsbrook. They applied fresh stain to numerous wooden surfaces around campus. Fences, benches, and tables now look brand new. It feels good when surroundings look good which is important to the healing process for our residents and students.

Why are our rocking chairs so important? For a child who has experienced emotional trauma, rocking is a way to soothe their nerves, calm down, and gain control of their behavior. Many helping handsfrom Keller Williams Richmond West assembled seven rocking chairs. In addition, they deep cleaned our group homes, beautified the campus by trimming bushes, raking, planting flowers, and power washing. They “Give Where They Live” as part of R.E.D. Day, an annual day of service dedicated to Renewing, Energizing, and Donating. On a separate day, BB&T also assembled and delivered rocking chairs.

This spring, one of our youth, who is Hispanic, celebrated her Quinceañera on campus with members of her VHBG family. Quinceañera is a celebration of a girl’s fifteenth birthday in parts of Latin America. This birthday is celebrated differently from any other as it marks the transition from childhood to young womanhood. We sincerely thank the Virginia Hispanic Chamber of

Commerce for their guidance with our Teaching Parents in planning this special celebration. It was an event this young lady will never forget.

Ensuring these types of special milestones in a child’s life are not missed is possible in part due to community partnerships like this and to VHBG’s ability to go above and beyond what is required by state licensing.

We believe all children deserve to grow up surrounded by a loving, nurturing family. All children deserve encouragement, protection, and a sense of belonging that come from supportive adult relationships in a healthy family environment and a safe supportive community. After all, a healthy family is critical to every child’s ability to live a successful life.

Providing a family: GROUP CAREVHBG opened two more group homes between August 2015 and February 2016, adding capacity for 16 more children ages 11-17. We were able to serve 53 youth and 98% were discharged as planned.

Success of a youth is measured independently and may look and feel very different for each youth. Sometimes it takes all threeVHBG programs working together to help a child begin to heal.

vhbg annual report 2016 17

We’ve added an art teacher and a therapist with an art therapy focus as part of the school curriculum to engage JGW students in artistic expression. The refreshed focus on art helps youth develop a sense of innovation as well as build and strengthen skills such as communication, problem-solving, critical-thinking, and visual-spatial learning. To provide vocational

skill development, we’ve expanded our Career Technical Education (CTE) program which includes horticulture, small engine repair, and wood-working. We’ve added a reading specialist because students we serve are often two to four grade levels behind. Helping children learn to read better so they can read to learn helps them succeed in school. Our goal is to transition

students back to their public schools as soon as possible and we’re happy to report that a majority of JGW students over the past five years have been discharged according to their individual education plans. In the 2015/2016 school year, JGW served 57 students.

With an objective of providing high-quality, alternative education using a trauma-informed approach, philanthropic dollars have helped us add a variety of programs at our John G. Wood School.

Annual Fund GiftsProgram fees made up just 52% of our 2016 operating support. We believe in providing more than the bare minimum of care to children in crisis, so we go above and beyond what is required by state licensing and apply best practice methods that achieve long-term results. Philanthropic support to our annual fund is essential to our budget and allows us to provide our youth with the highest quality of care available.

As a nonprofit organization, philanthropic dollars help us serve youth who have experienced serious trauma in their young lives by providing: 1) the Teaching Family model of care which requires full-time, highly trained teaching parents for each home; 2) non-required therapeutic services such as art therapy, a reading specialist, career training, mentoring, off-campus outings, and more; and 3) a beautiful, serene, “therapeutic neighborhood” that offers a setting where hope and healing can flourish. VHBG has existed for 170 years because of the philanthropic support from individuals and organizations like the ones listed here. We greatly appreciate our financial supporters.

We also thank any donors who are not listed and those who provided goods and services in-kind to VHBG. Donations listed here were provided during the fiscal year ending September 30, 2016. Care has been taken to ensure the accuracy of this list. However, should there be an omission or error, we express our sincere regret and ask that you bring it to our attention by calling 804-270-6566, ext. 115.

Each year we rely on the generosity of our community to deliver a level of care to our youth and families that far exceeds what we could do with public dollars alone.

There’s no better investment than the life of a child. But helping a child in crisis survive and develop to their full potential is a moral imperative. Children who become healthy and successful socially and emotionally have a greater chance of becoming economically productive and engaged citizens, which leads to a lifetime of benefits for them and our community.

At VHBG, our mission is to help children across Virginia with emotional and

behavioral health concerns by facilitating the healing process using a teaching-

family approach. The care children receive in our group homes, alternative K-12

school (John G. Wood), and outpatient counseling clinic restores hope to them

and their families who then find the courage to thrive. Our Mission
