Unmi ssabl e Hi ghli ghts of Vi ràsat'11

Viràsat at Dehradun evokes memories of memorable performances by the living legends of our times. The festival is also a journey to our

roots that define the very essence of Indian-ness and the magic of the arts that helps define what it is to be human. The festival opens

with the Garhwali ritual of Jagar singing, performed by the famed Basanti Devi Bisht, who is the lone woman exponent of this art form. Weestablish the Kshetrapal and the drum beats of drummers performing the traditional paisara welcomes fifteen days of a veritable feast of

culture.

Dilraj Kaur presents the opening concert at Virasat’11. She is a well known classical music and playback singer. Her career spans several

decades where she has sung for Shankar Jaikishan, O.P. Nayyar, Ravindra Jain, R.D. Burman, Laxmikant Pyarelal, Kalyanji Anandji, Madan

Mohan, Usha Khanna and Ustad Amjad Ali Khan among several others. She has recorded duets with Mohmmed Rafi, Manna Dey, Lata

Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh, Asha Bhosale, Suman Kalyanpur, Mahendra Kapoor and others. She has sung in various languages

such as Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi, Oriya, Bengali, Haryanvi, Bhojpuri, Sindhi, Kashmiri, Rajasthani, Avadhi, Konkani, Brij.

Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan is one of the finest sitar players alive today. His dazzling virtuosity and innovative genius have earned him a

legacy as a giant of the sitar. Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan learned his craft from his father, Ustad Aziz Khan and is a seventh generation heir to

the sitar's first family, the Etawah Gharana. Ustadji's global reputation as an awe inspiring performer is complemented by another rare gift, his ability to spread his music as a dedicated and loving guru.

Besides Shahid Parvez, we have a Sitar Recital by Manju Nandan, Flute recitable by the renowned Pt. Ronu Mazumdar, Violin Recital by Dr.

N. Rajam where the heritage or Virasat of three generations of Hindustani Violin will be presented from a single stage. The young

Bhaskarnath presents his Shehnai Music along with Kumud Dewan and Rupang Sircar singing the Thumris of the well-known courtesan

Gauhar Jaan.

Sufi music is not only based on God's remembrance and on the creator. Certain schools use the vibrations emanating from this purpose to transcend the physical

realm into the spiritual one. Sufi Music Sound and music occupy an important place in the life of most Sufis. It is a tool for the believer to

get closer to God, dissolving the physical realm into the spiritual one by polishing the heart and enhancing the spiritual aspect of the

human being over the physical being. Virasat brings a feast of Sufi Music to listeners. Well known exponents, Wadali Bandhu, Warsi

Brothers, Lakhwinder Wadali come together with the genuine sound of folk Sufi through Shaukat Ali Matoi with Punjabi folk and Arman

Faqir who presents Bangla Sufi.

Perhaps the biggest highlight of the Festival this year is the grand OCTAVE, a presentation of more than 400 artistes from the North

Eastern States, bringing together diverse forms like Bihu and the monastical dances from Sikkim. We have the Kohima Choir performing

with classical dancers from Manipur, all in one coordinated performance. A Mushaira featuring the best poets of the country, the likes of

Nida Fazli, Rahat Indori, Sheen Kaaf Nizam & Danish.

The Festival presents folk forms by Basanti Devi Bisht, well-known singer Manoj Tiwari, Nautanki, Ghoomar, Malwai Gidda and several other art forms. We present "Ashtadasha Parwa",

ballet by Sangeeta Sharma. We also have an exhibition on the life and times of Rabindra Nath Tagore. All this and much more in a true celebration of culture.
