This charmingly reinventedspot is part of WaterfrontToronto’s ongoing effort totransform neglected spaceson the waterfront intovaluable, usable publicamenities. The overpass,rather than remaining theurban barrier it once was,has now become a shelteredplace to play and relax, and asafe, inviting space thatconnects the north and southsections of the River Cityneighbourhood.

Designed by Claude Cormier, one of Canada’smost respected and certainly its mostimaginative landscape architect, RC3’soutdoor amenity spaces are as thoughtful asthe ones inside. Taking S+P’s architecturalvision as a starting point, Cormier has crafted an eclectic, beautiful and highlyfunctional outdoor space for all residents of River City Phase 3.

Cormier’s design is inspired by the angularaesthetic of the overall River Citydevelopment. The result – an outdooramenities space that cuts up and down insharp angles, centred on striking lap pool.

The focus on angles also results in anunusual green roof with a sloped grassylawn, designed for sitting and relaxing, withan unobstructed view of the city.

On the other side of the pool, a series of longsteps continues the playful design of theentire building, with oversized planters thatgive the area an Alice in Wonderland feel.

Adjacent to the outdoor amenity, changerooms allow for convenient pool use for youand your friends, while a full kitchen and barmake for an easy prep for an outdoor dinneror two.
