Even when we explain that we use the word revolution in its etymological sense, and mean by it a change in the basis of society, people are scared at the idea of such a vast change, and beg that you will speak of reform and not revolution.

So we will stick to our word, which means a change of the ba-sis of society; it may frighten people, but it will at least warn them that there is something to be frightened about, which will be no less dangerous for being ignored; and also it may encourage some people, and will mean to them at least not a fear, but a hope.

Fear and Hope // those are the names of the two great pas-sions which rule the race of man, and with which revolutio-nists have to deal; to give hope to the many oppressed and fear to the few oppressors, that is our business; if we do the fi rst and give hope to the many, the few must be frightenedby their hope; otherwise we do not want to frighten them; it is not revenge we want for poor people, but happiness.

“The importance of this distinction will be easily appreciatedby the student of animal psychology, and the more so by thestudent of human ethics. Love, sympathy and self-sacrificecertainly play an immense part in the progressive development of our moral feelings. But it is not love and not even sympathy upon which Society is based in mankind. It is the conscience -be it only at the stage of an instinct- of human solidarity. It is the unconscious recognition of the force that is borrowed by eachman from the practice of mutual aid; of the close dependency ofevery one’s happiness upon the happiness of all; and of the senseof justice, or equity, which brings the individual to considerthe rights of every other individual as equal to his own. Uponthis broad and necessary foundation the still higher moralfeelings are developed.”

If you believe with me that a crisis has come to our movement, if you believe that the time for fi nal action is now, if you catch the rosy tints of the coming day, what does it mean to you? Does it not give you a thrill of exaltation; does the blood not course more quickly through your veins; does it not bring a new sense of freedom, of joy and of determination? Is it not true that you who wanted a little time ago to lay down the work because you were weary with long service, now, under the compelling infl uence of a changed mental attitude, are ready to go on until the vote is won? The change is one of spirit. Aye, and the spiritual eff ect upon you will come to others. Let me borrow an expression from Hon. John Finlay: What our great movement needs now is a “mobilization of spirit”, the jubilant, glad spirit of victory.

With this faith, we will be able to hew out of the moun-tain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith, we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith, we will be able to work together, to pray together, to stru-ggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.

Martin Luther King, Jr, 1963.

We, the undersigned, are graphic designers, art directors and visual communicators who have been raised in a world in which the techniques and apparatus of advertising have persistently been presented to us as the most lucrative, effective and desirable use of our talents. Many design tea-chers and mentors promote this belief; the market rewards it; a tide of books and publications reinforces it.

Encouraged in this direction, designers then apply their skill and imagination to sell dog biscuits, designer coffee, diamonds, detergents, hair gel, cigarettes, credit cards, sneakers, butt toners, light beer and heavy-duty recrea-tional vehicles. Commercial work has always paid the bills, but many graphic designers have now let it become, in large measure, what graphic designers do. This, in turn, is how the world perceives design. The profession’s time and energy is used up manufacturing demand for things that are inessential at best.

Many of us have grown increasingly uncomfortable with this view of design. Designers who devote their efforts pri-marily to advertising, marketing and brand development are supporting, and implicitly endorsing, a mental environment so saturated with commercial messages that it is changing the very way citizen-consumers speak, think, feel, respond and interact. To some extent we are all helping draft a re-ductive and immeasurably harmful code of public discourse. There are pursuits more worthy of our problem-solving skills. Unprecedented environmental, social and cultural

crises demand our attention. Many cultural interventions, social marketing campaigns, books, magazines, exhibitions, educational tools, television programs, fi lms, charitable causes and other information design projects urgently require our expertise and help.

We propose a reversal of priorities in favor of more useful, lasting and democratic forms of communication -a mindshift away from product marketing and toward the exploration and production of a new kind of meaning. The scope of debate is shrinking; it must expand. Consu-merism is running uncontested; it must be challenged by other perspectives expressed, in part, through the visual languages and resources of design.

In 1964, 22 visual communicators signed the original call for our skills to be put to worthwhile use. With the explosive growth of global commercial culture, their mes-sage has only grown more urgent. Today, we renew their manifesto in expectation that no more decades will pass before it is taken to heart.

We must, we must understand the politics of our community and we must know what politics is supposed to produce. We must know what part politics play in our lives. And until we become po-litically mature, we will always be misled, led astray, or deceived or maneuvered into supporting someone politically who doesn’t have the good of our community at heart. [...] We will have to carry on a program, a political program, of reeducation – to open our people’s eyes, make us become more politically conscious, politically mature. And then, we will – whenever we are ready to cast our ballot, that ballot will be cast for a man of the community, who has the good of the community at heart. [...] We have to beco-me involved in a program of reeducation, to educate our people into the importance of knowing that when you spend your dollar out of the community in which you live, the community in which you spend your money becomes richer and richer, the communi-ty out of which you take your money becomes poorer and poorer.

[...] We suff er political oppression, economic exploitation and so-cial degradation. All of ‘em from the same enemy. The government has failed us.

[...] Sufrimos la opresión política, la explotación económica y la degrada-ción social. Todo ello desde el mismo enemigo. El gobierno nos ha fallado.

SO TODAY OUR PEOPLE ARE DISILLUSIONED. THEY’VE BE-COME DISENCHANTED. THEY’VE BECOME DISSATISFIED. AND IN THEIR FRUSTRATIONS THEY WANT ACTION.THE YOUNG GENERATION DON’T WANT TO HEAR AN-YTHING ABOUT “THE ODDS ARE AGAINST US.”

But we must warn against the language of rights being used to conceal attempts to maintain, in one form or another, the power, privileges or special status of one racial group. The Bill of Rights cannot be a device to secure the political or economic subordination of the majority or the minority [...] We must address the issues of poverty, want, deprivation and inequality in accor-dance with international standards which recognise the indivisibility of human rights. The right to vote, without food, shelter and health care will create the appearance of equality and justice, while actual inequality is entren-ched. We do not want freedom without bread, nor do we want bread without freedom.

We must promote democracy at every level of society. The best and most eff ective means of ensuring human rights and to promote the eradication of racism and sexism is to enable the full and unqualifi ed participation of all races, sexes and classes in all aspects of society [...] Democracy and human rights are inseparable. We can-not have the one without the other.

To radically shift regime behavior we must think clearly and boldly for if we have learned anything, it is that regimes do not want to be changed. We must think beyond those who have gone before us, and discover technological changes that embolden us with ways to act in which our forebears could not.

Firstly we must understand what aspect of government or neo-corporatist behavior we wish to change or remove.

Secondly we must develop a way of thinking about this behavior that is strong enough carry us through the mire of politically distorted language, and into a position of clarity. Finally must use these insights to inspire within us and others a course of ennobling, and effective action.

THE EVERYDAY HERO IS WHICH IS NOT SEEN, IS WHICH CONCEALS THROUGH THE THICK-NESS OF THE WALKERS WHO FLEET THE STREETS OF OUR CITIES. IT DOESN’T WEAR CAPE OR MASK, BUT IT HAS EARNED THE HERO NICKNAME. NOT FOR IT’S GREAT DEEDS, BUT RATHER FOR SMALL ACTIONS THAT HELP PEOPLE.

EL HÉROE COTIDIANO ES EL QUE NO SE VE, EL QUE SE DISIMULA ENTRE LA ESPESURA DE LOS VIAN-DANTES QUE ANDAN POR LAS CALLES DE NUESTRAS CIUDADES. NO LLEVA NI CAPA NI MÁSCARA, PERO SE HA GANADO EL APODO DE HÉROE. NO POR SUS GRANDES HAZAÑAS, SINO POR AQUELLAS PEQUEÑAS ACCIONES QUE AYUDAN A LA GENTE.

—For many people, especially elder people, carry shopping bags home from the supermarket is an arduous task.

But, for ones may seem the torture of the month, for others it’s only a small extra eff ort which removes only fi ve to ten minutes a day, in addition to facilitating the life of other person in uncou-ntless numbers.

—Never wander what to do with that parking ticket unexpired?

In Autum 2010 a girl from Valencia started a “Good Acting Chain” beginning with this simple deed -looking for someone to pass her unexpired parking ticket everytime she used the car-.

These acts went from paying the bus fare for the person next to her to buy a fresh bottle of watter randomly for the person sitting next to her.

—One day a girl got into a bar, she ordered two coff ees, but one as a “Caff e Sospesso”. She sat down and the waiter brought her one coff ee, she drunk it, paied for both coff ees and left.

Few moments later, an other man came into that very same bar, he was wearing dirty baggy clothes, and asked for any Caff e Sospesso’s, the waiter then gave him the second coff ee the woman had ordered before. The man drunk it and left happily.

That is how the Caff e Sospesso works. It began in the XVI century in Italy and has crossed boundries all around the world. It is a good deed that just requireds a little money to make someone extremly happy to keep going with their day.
