The piercing sound of the referees whistle cuts through the cold night air like a hot

knife. The sounds and sights of the viciously struck down player and the maylay that

ensued shortly after warms up the night faster than shot of whisky. The victimized

player is writhing on the ground in pain while the 8 year old kid grimices in pain with

concern for the same name and number he proudly wears on his back. The referee

pulls out a short stack of cards, takes account of all names and numbers, then shows

that bright flourecent yellow card to one man, the one, the culprit. Slow to get up the

shaken up player hobbles off, while his teammate stands ever so epicly over the ball.

Quickly the player looks up, to calculate the distance, to intimidate the keeper and his

wall of defenders. Will he score? Will the keeper make a great save? I hope so.

professional players are soccer slaves.

Well, if this is slavery, give me a life

100,000 people in the stands, divided by nation-

ality, by culture and by the color of their shirt.

100,000 people cheer, smile, cry and chant then

they taunt, taunt people they have never met

before, people they don’t know. On the field

stand two teams, 22 men, 11 on each side and

three referees trying to channel that environ-

ment, all of that energy. This is anything but

friendly, this is war, beautiful, loud, intense,

vibrant war. Why is it called a friendly match?

Why is it labeled as being meaningless? I

guess that it could be looked at as meaningless

because there is no trophy at stake, no position

in the standings on the line. Yet it is always

intense when neighboring nations play each

other, Is it for territory, for history, for pride.

Yes all of the above, it is primal, pride is primal,

respect is earned and this is not friendly, this is

war. When two neighboring countries play each

other it is about territory, history and war, but

most of all it is about pride & respect the intan-

gible and invisible, the unwritten, not measured

by money and not engraved on a trophy.

The camera pans to the left and a large billowing cloud of red smoke appears sur-

rounded by a sea of loud, aggravated and shirtless supporters. Are they hooligans or

are they just normal people with an abnormal level of passion for their club. They cant

all be hooligans right, some are doctors, students, hair dressers and road workers. Is

it abnormal to love a team or a sport that much? Isn’t it good to believe in something

this much, It is interesting when you hear people talk about “their” club. When did it

become my club? I don’t know but it’s true, maybe its our club, but that’s exactly it, the

club exists because of us, because of the supporters so it is our club, it is my team. I

may not have money invested, but I do have something invested, maybe more valuable

than money. my spirit.

In Latin America the border between

soccer and politics is vague. There is a long list of

governments that have fallen or been

overthrown after the defeat of the national team.

pushing, pulling, shoving and yelling in the space of 18 yards. The alert keeper com-

mands his troops like a general on his tank telling his striker to cove the back post

while he lines up his defenders at the same time fighting for position to protect his

posts. At the corner marker the line judge gives the ok and the oposing player raises

his hand. He strikes the ball with both power and precision, as if in slow motion every-

thing slows down in that moment, time stands still and so do the hearts of the sup-

porters. A head dives into that crowd and directs the ball into that upper back corner

where that innocent striker stands wating. A split second later, maybe even less the

keeper flys in the air and gets his fingertips on the ball, diverting it away from his post,

his beloved post.

The purpose of this project was to pick a subject

and find a way to document & explore it through

some repeatable action and process. I chose

futbol, initially because I wanted to watch futbol

and if I could create a book around watching

futbol , then what could be better. As I worked

on it I also realized how interested I am in

incorporating my love of soccer into my profes-

sional life in some way, This book was my first

step in bringing my two loves together design

+ futbol, hopefully It will work out. GO DIABLOS!
