TwoyearsagoatFlomaton Speedway,anearbydirttrackjustacrossthestatelineinAlabama,Crossleyflippedandrolledhis1934Vintagesedan.Crossleywasnotonlyunharmedthankstotheharnessesbut,preposterouslyperhaps,raringtocontinueracingthatsamenight.

“Iwould’vecompletedtheraceifIcould,butthecarwasn’tabletogo,”hesaid.“Itwasjustanotherridetome.Nobigdeal.Likearollercoasterridethatslingsyouupsidedown.”Crossleycertainlyhopeshistorydoesn’trepeatitselfwhentheever-growingSouthern Vintage Racing Associa-tionmakesitsannualpilgrimagetoFiveFlagsSpeedwayonFridaynight.

BillDanielsgothisracingcareergoingaround1966intheSpecta-torClassatFiveFlags.YoungBrianDanielswouldcheerhisdaddyonfromthepitsorthebighillwhereallthekidsgathered.“Itwasneat—gettingtowatchhimandseewhathedidoutthereonthattrack,”saidBrianDaniels,aPensacolanativenowlivinginBayMinette,Ala.

ThisFriday,theirroleswillbereversedasfatherwillberootingforsonwhenBrianDanielsaccom-panieshisSouthern Vintage Racing AssociationcompatriotsintheirannualstopatPensacola’shighbanks.
