Location and getting hereSavusavu calls itself the Hidden Paradise – and with good reason. It’s off the sunset strip of commercial vacationland, away from the rush of day-glo tourists, bus tours and international hotel chains. It’s about a 25 minute walk from Daku resort into Savusavu – or a three minute taxi ride.

Getting here

Fiji Airways, Fiji’s national carrier, has regular flights from many international destinations (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Auckland, Christchurch, Honolulu, Los Angeles, Vancouver and Hong Kong). Jetstar, Air New Zealand, Korean Air, and Virgin Australia also fly regularly to Fiji.

Nadi International Airport (NAN) is the main arrival airport to the country for most airlines. Depending on connection times, direct flights from Nadi to Savusavu are usually the fastest route. You can also fly to Labasa airport and then taxi to Savusavu (F$100 – approx US$55). Labasa to Savusavu by road is approximately 80-minutes; the road goes over spectacular mountains with some lovely views.

It’s hard to say what it is about Savusavu that draws repeat visitors and why so many of those visitors end up full or part-time residents with their own slice of paradise. It’s an active community of locals, expats, yachties, and visitors from around the globe. It’s a quirky little place with limited choices for the dedicated shopper – but lots of endearing nooks and crannies.

Town is a mile long and has nearly everything you need lodged in colourful buildings facing the bay. You’ll find a mix of cafes, funky Indian shops, a Hot Bread Kitchen, hardware stores, video stores, a well stocked bottle shop, a post office, ANZ and Westpac banks, two supermarkets, and an outdoor/indoor fresh veggie and fruit market where you’ll find all the home grown goods – plus a great handicraft market run by local Fijian women.

FoodIt’s a tradition here, as you may have read on Trip Advisor, that guests dine together. This is usually a great way for you to meet fellow guests, exchange travelling tales and enjoy some stimulating and varied conversation. If you’d prefer a separate private dinner, we have other areas around The Pool and The Big Bure, where you can order a la carte. We’ve listed below some sample menus for our ‘communal’ dinner and attached a list of a la carte options. Vegetarian options are always available, utilsing some unusual local produce. Either way, we hope you will enjoy an outstanding dining experience.

Activities Daku Resort!

SNORKELLING: Go by boat on a snorkelling trip to the reef. Fiji is justly famous for its coral reefs and abundance of fish life, and we visit snorkelling spots within a 20 minute boat ride from the resort.

Kayak hire: Singles and Doubles

Spend some time at the white sand beach of Mutuku across the bay. Take a picnic and a snorkel and enjoy the privacy of this remote setting. Enjoy a picnic there.

TAPA DEMONSTRATION: Watch Mereoni, one of our staff, demonstrate how to make traditional Tapa (Fijian bark cloth). Try it yourself – at least you can make a bookmark!

Massage: we have a superb in-house masseur. Prices range depending on what massage you choose.

Visit Waisele waterfall; it’s about 30 minutes drive followed by a fairly steep jungle walk down to a series of fresh water pools with a magnificent cool waterfall.

Listen to an illustrated talk about the local black pearl farm, J. Hunter Pearls, and then go out and visit the farm platforms in the bay. 9.30am or 1.30pm.

Vuadomo Waterfall: there’s a lovely waterfall across the bay a Vuadomo village where you can wade into the deep pool and stand beneath the cascade.

Take a trip to Natewa Bay for sensational snorkelling and, if you’re lucky, a sighting of the resident pod of dolphins.

Visit a local village with meke (traditional Fijian dance). They always greet us warmly; this is not the mass tourism of the main island.

Hot baths: Savusavu has its own geo-thermal hot sptrings, and an enterprising local doctor has built a simple set of concrete baths.

Hike up the mountain behind Daku. It’s a 3 km route which goes up the hillside steeply, passing under towering rain trees and delivering sweeping views of the bay.

SCUBA DIVING: we can arrange diving with Jean-Michel Cousteau Dive, which is based 5k down the road from us.

Take a picnic to Devodara beach (25 mins bus drive) – try to time it for a low tide so you can walk in the sand and swim in the Blue Lagoon. Cost depends on numbers.

Flora Tropica Botacial Gardens: 4k down the road the Flora Tropica Botanical Gardens have a wonderful display of tropical flora with an emphasis on palms.

Paradise CoursesOur Paradise Courses are week long learning vacations, each one lead by a specialist teacher. Most of our teachers come from Australia, with some from New Zealand and the USA. They offer daily workshops with organsed excursions in between, and spare time to just relax.

We offer weeks of –

n Art and photography

n Snorkelling

n Singing

n Writing

n Bird watching

We’ve welcomed many people of many ages – but there are two characteristics that unite everyone who comes – a passion to deepen their involvement in a chosen subject, and a determination to make sure not to leave things on the bucket list until too late.

Come alone or bring a friend – either way, you’ll have privacy when you need it and companionship when you want it.

YogaWe host regular week-long yoga retreats throughout the year at Daku Resort, welcoming teachers and students from all over the world. Most of our teachers come from Australia, and we also have teachers from the USA and New Zealand. We also host 200 hour yoga teacher training courses.

Have a look at our website for a list of our programmes: www.yogainfiji.com

The yoga practice takes place in our stunning yoga shala, the largest custom built yoga space in the South Pacific. It is a beautiful 10m square open sided platform shaded against the morning and evening sun, with spectacular views out over the bay.

And if there’s no retreat on at the time of your visit, you are welcome to roll out one of our mats and do your own practice in the tranquility of the shala.

DivingJean-Michel Cousteau Diving offers some of the best diving in the world. Based in Savusau, its dive sites explore the fabulous reefs of Fiji and the profusion of hard and soft corals and myriad fish life. It has a professional dive staff, two fast boats that can take 12 divers each, and well-maintained diving equipment.

Daku Resort is 5 kilometres down the road from Jean-Michel Cousteau Diving and between the two of us, we’re offering a fantastic dive package that allows you to stay comfortably at Daku but spend most of your money on diving.

Here’s what you get:

n *Five days SCUBA diving – up to 10 dives with JMC Diving

n *Seven nights twin shared accommodation in an ocean view bure at Daku Resort

- all for only FJ$1980 per person- This price is based on double occupancy (approx US$1150 – check latest exchange rates) + 20% taxes.*

Here’s how it goes:

Every morning at 8.15 you’ll be taken by taxi down to the Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort. It’s just 15 minutes down the road. The boat will go out at 8.30 for two dives on our world famous reef. All the sites are within 30 minutes of the resort and you’ll be back at the resort in time for a late lunch.

Afternoons can be spent lazing by the pool or going out on local excursions, kayaking, hiking and wandering round Savusavu.

Don’t believe us? Listen to this:

The only activity I did while at Daku was scuba diving, and for good reason: the diving in this part of Fiji is the stupefyingly, stunningly, amazing. The Jean-Michel

Cousteau dive shop (attached to the resort of the same name), is an absolutely world-class operation that took me on the best dives of my life. Even better, staying at Daku saved us money two ways: first, while the Cousteau resort is very very nice, a bungalow at Daku is 1/5 or 1/10 of the price of a room at Cousteau. Second, Daku’s arranged a special rate that make the diving prices very reasonable (not cheap, but a great value for the level of service we got).

From Will M on Trip Advisor

Airport transfers from Savusavu airport included.Price does not include air fares or meals. If you’re on your own, you can either take a single room for a supplement of F$400 (approx US$235) or we’ll put you into another one of our rooms – but we’ll discuss that with you when you book.
