by Tom Jordan

Geoff Hollister, 1946-2012

What always struck me as

remarkable about Geoff was

that he brought the eye of

an artist to the worlds of

business, events, and film.

One of Nike’s Originals, he

did more than sell shoes

out of the back of his car

to promote the company in

the early days. Through his

creative vision, he helped build the brand

into the largest sportswear and shoe com-

pany in the world.

You’ve seen the Oregon Track Club sin-

glets with the tree on them, worn by Steve

Prefontaine, and brought back as “retro”

in recent years? That was Geoff’s design.

The Nike Stores and Nike Towns around the

country? Geoff opened the first retail out-

let of BRS West and later The Athletic De-

partment here in Eugene. The “pin-wheel”

design made up of multiple Swooshes?

Geoff again.

This artist had a wonderful knack for pro-

motion as well; a combination of talents

not often seen in any arena. He signed Pre

as the first Nike athlete, though it wasn’t

legal at the time for athletes to be paid

for being athletes. So Geoff asked Steve

what he would like his new “promotional”

position with Nike to be called. He always

chuckled at the title Pre came up with:

Director of Global Athletics. Neither man

thought small.

Geoff headed up Nike’s branding and

promotional efforts at the 1972, ’76, and

’80 Olympic Trials. I got to know him when

he and Tom Sturak were the Nike execs

charged with helping a green Pre Classic

meet director in 1984. He

brought a big-picture vision

to help make the event wor-

thy of its name.

Perhaps Geoff’s greatest

forte was as a producer of

film projects. In 1990, he pro-

duced a documentary about

his college coach and men-

tor, Bill Bowerman. In 1995,

he shepherded the acclaimed

documentary of Steve Prefon-

taine, “Fire On The Track,” to completion

and a silver medal at the New York Film Fes-

tival. That was followed by the 1997 motion

picture, “Prefontaine,” where he served as

technical adviser, ramrod, and official en-

courager. He completed his autobiography,

“Out of Nowhere” in 2008, justly proud of

having finished it despite daunting health

challenges.

Artist, promoter, producer, author… ex-

traordinary talent. We who knew him were

the lucky ones.

Upcoming UO Track and Field Meets

OnTrack APRIL 2012

The 2012 version of the Prefontaine Clas-

sic will have a new twist.

The African Republic of Kenya will stage

its men’s 10,000-meter Olympic Trials as

part of the Pre Classic on Friday, June 1 at

Hayward Field according to meet director

Tom Jordan, longtime OTC member.

The Classic is part of the International

Diamond League circuit of prestigious track

and field meets. The annual Pre meet is

scheduled for Friday and Saturday, June 1

and 2. The June 2 portion of the meet will be

televised live by NBC starting at noon.

The 10,000-meter race on Friday will be part of a special “Hol-

lister Night at Hayward,” in honor of the late Geoff Hollister, a

Nike pioneer, who was instrumental in the creation of many of

Oregon’s most notable track and field and running events, in-

cluding the Pre Classic.

There will be no admission charge for Friday night’s program.

Besides the men’s 10,000, Jordan said the men’s triple jump,

women’s discus and women’s hammer throw will be also con-

tested on Friday. Those are all Diamond League events.

The Kenyan race will feature the top 15

athletes in the event as identified by Ath-

letics Kenya, the national governing body.

The race will be comprised exclusively of

Kenyan athletes. The top 2 finishers will au-

tomatically make the team to the London

Olympics, with the 3rd member being se-

lected by Athletics Kenya.

The decision by Athletics Kenya to move

the race from Nairobi where it is typically

held was based on the fact that Eugene’s

altitude and weather conditions are similar

to those the runners are likely to encounter

in London.

Tickets for the Prefontaine Classic are available. Go to www.

goducks.com, 1-800-WEBFOOT, or the Autzen Stadium ticket

windows to purchase your tickets.

The annual Pre Classic is brought to you by Nike and the Or-

egon Track Club.

By Bridget Franek

In the midst of an intense training

period, athletes on the Oregon Track

Club Elite have been gaining strength

and inspiration from the ‘TrackTown’

spirit all over Oregon. Last Saturday

they attended the third annual Blue

River Relays. Here they split into

teams of two, allowing their competi-

tive spirit to surface, as they enter-

tained a crowd of excited locals. The

surrounding area provided a splendid

backdrop to the beautifully constructed and carefully kept track,

while the weather held perfect for running. The Blue River commu-

nity was very generous in hosting such a wonderful event.

OREGON TRACK CLUBwww.oregontrackclub.org

Two Oregon Track Club Elite athletes traveled to Istanbul, Tur-

key in early March to compete in the IAAF World Indoor Champi-

onships. Multi-event star Ashton Eaton made it clear that he is

the top heptathlete in the world, setting personal records in two

events, beating his nearest opponent by over 500 points (the larg-

est margin in the history of the championships), and breaking his

own world record by 77 points. While winning five individual events,

Eaton set PRs in both the long jump (8.16 meters / 26 feet, 9 ¼

inches) and the shot put (14.56 / 47-9 ¼). This is his third world

record in three consecutive years in the heptathlon.

Fellow Oregonian Jesse Williams unfortunately did not have

his best day in the men’s High Jump. He made it to the finals and

cleared 2.31/7-7 on his third attempt. The jump was only enough to

garner sixth place against a very tough field.

Closer to home, several members of the OTC Elite distance squad

opened up their own outdoor season at the Oregon Preview on

Sunday, March 18th. Notable achievements were first and second

place finishes in the women’s 3000m by Sally Kipyego and Julia

Lucas, and wins by Stephen Pifer (men’s 3000m), Bridget Franek

(women’s 2000m

steeple), Tyler

Mulder (section

winner in men’s

1500m), Geena Gall

(women’s 800m),

and Lucais MacKay

(men’s hammer).

Over the next

few weeks, many

of the athletes will

be living and train-

ing at high altitude

in Flagstaff, Ariz.

With its proxim-

ity to Sedona and

Phoenix, Flagstaff is

ideal for this type of work. When they return, the outdoor season

will be underway beginning with the Oregon Relays (April 19-21).
