Participating in the local Berry, Nowra, Kangaroo Valley and Milton Shows. 5 students also completed an Australian Alpaca Association Youth Presenters course on 16 and 17 January 2015 in their own time during the school holidays. It is also interesting to note that as a result of their participation in the Youth Trainers Camp at Cambewarra Jenn Burns and Yasmin Holland were involved in the setting up and the successful running of the Young Farmers Competition at the Berry Show on Friday 30 January 2015. At the Berry show on Saturday 31 January 2015 we entered 23 in the poultry section receiving 9 First and 9 Second places. Great result well done! At the Nowra Show on Saturday 7 February 2015 we entered 9 Students out of 15 students in the Alpaca Youth Paraders Event held at Nowra for the first time in 15 years. The results on the next page show how outstandingly well we went. At the same show we entered 23 chooks and 1 duck in the poultry section and again we had outstanding results with 9 First and 7 Second places. At the Nowra show the team gave several demonstrations on how to wash, dry and present chooks for showing. This presentation was so successful that we were again invited to demonstrate chook washing and presentation at the Kangaroo Valley Show. The all conquering Vincentia High School Show Team then moved on to Kangaroo Valley show on Saturday 14 February 2015. We received our first ever champions ribbon as sectional winners in the poultry competition. Mrs Worthy who has attended every show was witnessed jumping for joy. When it was pointed out that this may be unfair to other competitors she exclaimed that they could jump for joy when they win. This shows the positive, committed, competitive spirit being imparted to all students involved in the show teams. The following results again show our very successful effort at this show. Of the 18 chooks and 7 ducks we entered we won 11 Firsts and 5 Second places. On Saturday 21 February 2015 we moved on to the last of the local shows - Milton. Here again we won another champion ribbon in the water fowl (duck) section and Mrs Worthy’s jumping had been refined to a small jig in front of the winning Muscovy. This now appears to be a ritual after winning a ribbon. We won 9 First and 5 Second places, these results continue to show how successful we have been on the local show circuit. Last, but by far not least, the students who have participated in attending shows on weekends in their own time, who have washed and polished the Chooks, Ducks and Alpacas for the last 5 weeks need to be acknowledged. Many of these students have appeared in the local newspaper contributing positively to the Vincentia High School Show Team. Very well done to all involved !!!! We would like to thank our Principal Mr Glenday who has attended all of the shows with the teams, he has taught our show team how to prepare and show our poultry for each competition. Jenn Burns, Yasmin Holland, Rosemary Defries, Simone Hicks, Michael Holland, Hayden Regent, Rebecca Jenkinson, Lachlan Smith, Maddie Cooper, Travis Lawson, Courtney Stamos, Piper Hammond and Georgia Matheson-Gee We have not covered the Alpacas in great detail as we will hopefully be able to republish an article being written for the Australian Alpaca Association quarterly publication by Jenn Burns with some help from her friends. It may be titled ‘From Zero to Purple Ribbon in 12 Months’. Looking forward to it Jenn!

Vincentia High School Show Teams Success Vincentia High School Show Team has had an outstanding season thus far.

We have not covered the Alpacas in great detail as we will hopefully be able to republish an article being written for the Australian Alpaca Association quarterly publication by Jenn Burns with some help from her friends. It may be titled ‘From Zero to Purple Ribbon in 12 Months’. Looking forward to it Jenn!

University of Wollongong ‘STEM Travelling Road Show’ visits Vincentia High School An interactive Road Show from the University of Wollongong visited Vincentia High School to showcase the opportunities available for students wanting to study engineering or information sciences post Year 12. The students from a few Year 7 and Year 8 classes took part in a variety of hands on experiments, including a bicycle that uses pedal power to make a milk shake, making a bottle rocket and extracting DNA from a piece of fruit.

The school visit was hosted the by UOW Engineer, Dr Bob Wheway and a team of university representatives, including nine undergraduate students, who shared their experiences of life at university. The Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) road show is part of a university and federal government-funded commitment to motivate students from rural areas, indigenous backgrounds and disadvantaged backgrounds, to consider a university education. The program targets students in the early years of high school to help them decide on their subject selection for senior school to open up opportunities for further education. Dr Wheway said “Unfortunately, many feel that a university education is out of reach or a place where they don’t belong. We want to show them that a technology and engineering education gives them a great future and job prospects.”

As part of the Vincentia High School plan, the road show plays a supportive role towards delivering technology, science and engineering based subjects in a new format better suited to the current NET generation’s learning style through ‘inquiry based learning’. Inquiry is not merely ‘having students do projects’ but rather strives to nurture deep, discipline-based way of thinking and doing with students.

Vincentia High School is committed to further improve student access to technology and inquiry based learning by purchasing equipment such as 3D printers and a CNC Plasma cutting machine that will form the foundation of a business model based manufacturing centre capable of producing complex shapes, projects and products quickly in metals and plastics.

The centre will be capable of producing individualised designs in metals for sale to the general public. Allowing students to participate in authentic experiential learning environments, these technologies encompass some of the skills sets required for the jobs of the future. For more information on this project contact Mr Donohue [email protected]

Save the Heart of Huskisson As I am sure you will all know by now, Save the Heart of Huskisson (a coalition of residents, business and tourism associations in the Bay and Basin region) has successfully lobbied council to 'put in a tender' to try and buy the land at 59 Owen Street, Huskisson, to preserve the magnetic views and open space. While this is a great outcome for us, it is not an outright win as we don't know if their tender will be successful.

We have good reason to believe there are community-minded decision-makers at Council (and at Club Jervis Bay) who are keen to see this block brought into council/public ownership, and every sign that they are supported by the community will help. While we know it is ambitious, we are continuing to crowdfund and we only have until the 11th February to get the total up as high as possible. Any amount you feel you can pledge towards this cause will help towards our goal. Please go to ozcrowd.com/heart and share with your networks.
