We are pleased to announce individual and semi-private yoga instruction with Sarah MacMillan.

Born in Cali Colombia, Sarah moved to Miami as a teen, and later obtained her A.S. She then developed her own yoga practice and completed her 200 RYT certification so she could begin teaching.

Sarah was trained under the guidance of Lex Gillan of The Yoga Institute in Houston. She draws inspiration from many styles (Vinyasa, Iyengar, Ashtanga, and Jivamukti) and teachers. Sarah attends continuing education workshops and is devoted to the ongoing learning experience of being teacher and practitioner.

For Sarah, becoming mentally and physically flexible begins on the yoga mat. She can be reached at [email protected] or 281-296-3657.

    Your Aquatics Director, Phil Sundahl

Phil recently participated in the 2013 Pan-American Masters Championship in Sarasota, Florida. Over 30 countries were represented in this meet that spanned 13 days and was disrupted by Tropical Storm Andrea and a near tornado strike. Phil competed in five individual and two relay events. On the first day of the meet, he swam the 800-freestyle during bouts of rain and strong winds and came out on top, winning the gold medal. The next day he took first place in the 400-Individual Medley after a four-hour delay due to the tropical storm. The following days he swam in the 200- and 100-backstroke events and placed 2nd in both. On his last day, he capped off the meet with a 3rd place finish in the 50-backstroke.

Phil has worked as the VillaSport Aquatics Director since April 2009. He was previously a swim coach and All-American and NCAA swimmer. Phil has swum with the likes of Rowdy Gaines, Ron Neugent, David Wilson, and Joey Hudepohl, all former Olympians. He has also been coached by past and current Olympic coaches and was a 1988 Olympic Trials qualifier.

Phil is dedicated to sharing his passion of swimming and managing an aquatics program to teach children and adults skills for a lifetime of enjoyment in the water. He can be reached at [email protected] or 281-296-3676.

Pool Training Drills for Open Water

    Finding your Center of Balance

With a kickboard under your hips as you float horizontally, gradually move into a str

    eamline position.

Shift the board until you are not pitching either forward or backward. Once you

    have found your

center of balance, work to maintain that position without the kickboard while s

    treamlining off the

wall, adding kick, and progressing into catch-up drill (one of the best drills for d

    istance freestyle).

    Pace Training

A simple set that can be repeated each workout is 5 x 100, during which you ar

    e attempting to hold

the exact same time per 100, stay relaxed, and record your time and heart rate

    after each. Over the

course of your training season, you can evaluate your progress and create a ra

    ce plan based on your

    sustainable pace.

    Sighting Drills

To start, try lifting the eyes just above the water, looking forward as your ha

    nd enters for the

catch your forward hand will anchor you and help to maintain balance. This lo

    w-profile sight

will be sufficient to see your position relative to other swimmers during the race

    . Once youve

mastered this, you can practice elevating slightly higher, as if sighting for turn b

    uoys on the race

course, again using your forward hand to anchor yourself.

    M E M B E R S U C C E S S S T O R Y Introducing the Drolet Family Claudie, Michel, Marguerite, and WilliamVillaSport, Colorado Springs

As a family, we had a blast!

On behalf of my crazy, beautiful family, we would like to thank VillaSport and the Fitness Department for the Spring LOSE TO WIN Challenge.

We all know that we have weight to lose, but when juggling university, four teenagers, and a military husband, it seems that life gets in the way and food becomes a quick fix for pleasure and fun. Since I have always been active physically, I never felt the urge to make the extra effort to lose the extra weight; it was a one day thing.

I got my wake-up call when the doctor said our son is overweight, and that if he keeps gaining weight, his risk of diabetes will increase greatly. I watched my grandfather battle diabetes his whole life; I didnt want my children to go there if I could help it.

It was then that I noticed VillaSports LOSE TO WIN challenge. My husband wasnt really happy about it, but I signed us and two of our children up. I also realized that since I was the one who buys the groceries, I was the one deciding what foods would come into our home. Our kids did complain, but they were really funny about the way they expressed their grievances.

In addition to exercising more, we made adjustments to our diets.

    1. We went gluten-free and eliminated pasta and breads. Our older son (the one who looked so grumpy at boot camp) has autism. We have often heard that a gluten-free diet would make a big difference in his behavior management.2. We went almost lactose-free. We are French Canadians, so specialty cheeses were a big part of our diet. We kept yogurt and switched to almond milk.3. We bought a Vitamix blender and tripled our vegetable and fruit consumption. We were already big fans of fresh fruits and vegetables, so you can imagine how much we consumed among the six of us.

I am happy to report that after completion of the 12-week challenge, our family is 90 pounds lighter. My kids say they are so done with the diet (what they dont realize is that I am still the one who does the grocery shopping). As for myself, I am halfway to my personal goal. I find that weighing weekly helps with accountability and keeps me motivated. Setting fitness goals is important too. I ran my first 5K and am pretty proud of that accomplishment. I do hope these changes will last forever.

We are very thankful to our VillaSport Fitness Advisors for giving us that kick in the backside that we needed, and we welcome the ongoing encouragement.

Claudie (on behalf of the Drolet family)

The LOSE TO WIN results are in and congratulations go to the Drolet family for taking 2nd place in the team division and to Michel Drolet, who placed 8th in the individual challenge. Our VillaSport family is very proud of all your accomplishments. The Fall LOSE TO WIN competition begins in September.
