VILLANCICO
This is a traditional Spanish Christmas
Carol.
It is very popular in Andalucia and the
South of Spain & is sung with Flamenco
rhythm and percussion (with passion!)
Verse 1.
Los caminos se hicieron,
con agua, viento y frío.
Caminaba un anciano
muy triste y afligido. ¡A la gloria!
A su bendita madre, victoria.
¡Gloria al recién nacido! ¡Gloria!
The roads were made,
with water, wind and cold.
Crossing them was an old man
very sad and distressed. To the Glory! ( He sang:)
Of his blessed mother, (and her victory).
Glory to the newborn! Gloria!
Verse 2.
Llegaron a un mesón,
para pedir posada,
y el mesonero ingrato
iba y se la negaba. ¡A la gloria!
A su bendita madre, victoria.
¡Gloria al recién nacido! ¡Gloria!
They came to an inn,
asking for shelter,
and an ungrateful innkeeper
was there and they were denied. To the Glory!
Of his blessed mother, (and her victory).
Glory to the newborn! Gloria!
Verse 3.
Que el que trae dinero,
toíta la casa es suya,
pero si no lo trae,
no hay posada ninguna. ¡A la gloria!
A su bendita madre, victoria.
¡Gloria al recién nacido! ¡Gloria!
For those that bring money
Then the house is yours,
But if you bring nothing,
There is no room in the inn. To the Glory!
Of his blessed mother, (and her victory).
Glory to the newborn! Gloria!
Verse 4.
La Virgen al oír eso,
se cayó desmayada,
y San José le dice:
Levántate esposa amada. ¡A la gloria!
A su bendita madre, victoria.
¡Gloria al recién nacido! ¡Gloria!
At that, The Virgin Mary ,
fainted with weakness,
and (Saint)Joseph said:
Arise beloved wife. To the Glory!
Of his blessed mother, (and her victory).
Glory to the newborn! Gloria!
Verse 5.
Levántate esposa amada.
¡Levántate esposa amada!
Mientras yo esté a tu lado,
no te hará falta de nada. ¡A la gloria!
A su bendita madre, victoria.
¡Gloria al recién nacido! ¡Gloria!
Arise beloved wife.
Arise beloved wife!
While I'm by your side,
you will not lack anything. To the Glory!
Of his blessed mother, (and her victory).
Glory to the newborn! Gloria!
Verse 6.
Y desde allí se fueron,
a un portal recogido,
y entre el buey y la mula
nació el verbo divino. ¡A la gloria!
A su bendita madre, victoria.
¡Gloria al recién nacido! ¡Gloria!
And from there they left,
finding a stable,
and between the cattle and the donkey
the divine word was born. To the Glory!
Of his blessed mother, (and her victory).
Glory to the newborn! Gloria!
