F or some time now the problem of blue-green algae has been affecting the village Pond in the Pulborough Road. This has caused concern for storrington &

sullington Parish Council both because of potential toxicity and because of the cost of rectifying the condition. After lengthy consultation with a water management company and the Environment Agency it has been agreed that the only solution is to drain and de-silt the pond. In fact we are reusing the silt to enhance the pond with a new reed island, which will assist in keeping the water clean and rebuilding the existing eroded island. This will be quite a major project and it is anticipated to commence towards the end of August and will take approximately 3-4 weeks. County Councillor Frank wilkinson supported the Parish Council submission for a “Big society Fund” grant for the pond works and £10,000

was awarded towards the project. A further application for funds has been made to Horsham District Council for “s106” monies, whereby initiatives such as this receive support from the local Planning Authority with monies attached to the granting of planning permission.

To make the area more “user friendly” a new duck feeding area is being created as one of the causes of the algae is bread being thrown directly into the pond. The Environment Agency has very kindly offered to park a vehicle on site during the project to inform and educate the public about the works and future maintenance of the pond. we would also like to acknowledge a donation from the storrington Bonfire society to cover the cost of an information board about the pond. This will be put in situ on completion of the work.

Storrington Pond to be Drained

Elan Nursery says goodbye & good luck!

This year Elan have 19 children that are now ready to leave the Nursery for their first exciting year at either Upper Beeding, steyning, Ashington,

washington, Portslade, Henfield, west Chilitington, Jolesfield or shoreham Primary schools. The staff and children put together a great summer leavers concert for all their parents and carers, they sang Dingle Dangle scarecrow, Frere Jacques (in French and English!), wind the Bobbin up and many more songs – with all the right hand motions too!!!

ON Guard! local Young Fencing Competitors from sussex are

Fencing is a big part of Olympic tradition and with the Olympics now behind us, and the Paralympics looming, there has never been a better time to get involved. what a fantastic sport to get both your children and yourself into! stretch... strengthen... streamline

Pilates Equipment uses spring loaded resistance and pulleys. Your own body weight acts as resistance too. It allows you to work

in several planes of motion with a full range at each joint. By developing proper Pilates technique on the reformer, you can re-train

your body to move in more effi cient patterns of motion giving you a lean sculpted look while providing a fun, enjoyable and unique

workout that will be different than anything you have ever tried before.(One-to-one for 55 mins)

The Pilates Springboard is a wall mounted unit that creates a broad repertoire of exercises using spring loaded resistance. Based on the traditional Pilates principles of core strengthening work, it will

emphasize spinal articulation and stabilization, lengthening and strengthening the body. The aim is a fl owing, challenging all-over

workout and is particularly useful for improving posture and balance. It is wonderfully fun and challenging.

(Maximum 4 people for 55 min)

The Pilates Mat repertoire is a comprehensive system of exercises designed to focus on core strength, mobilization of shoulders and hips and a total workout for the spine using fl uid, fl owing movement which will enhance postural alignment and improve stability. Adding small

apparatus or props, such as the fi tness circle, fl ex bands and balls creates challenge and variety to fl oor exercises.

(Maximum 4 people for 55 mins)

If you have an injury or a chronic condition, we suggest seeking advice from your Doctor or Physiotherapist before starting Pilates classes.

BEAUTY TIPfor the month

I managed to catch Debby for a very quick tip on Hydration...

At this time of the year when it’s so humid,

it is incredibly important to drink as much

fl uid as possible. Dehydration can lead to

lethargy, fatigue and headaches, and by the

time you get a headache you are already

dehydrated. Remember that the only thing

that actually hydrates the body is pure water,

not tea, coffee or carbonated soft drinks.

WATER. You wouldn’t wash your outside in tea

or coffee would you? It’s just as important to

wash the body from inside as it is out to keep

everything working at its optimum!

18 • FENCINg wITH CRAwlEY swORD ClUB

The sport of Fencing had me intrigued during our recent Olympic games. Although not one of the

most well- known or publicised past times, it contained both mental and physical attributes that held my attention and made me keen to fi nd out more.

I was pleased to discover a local club at the K2 in Crawley and was soon making plans to meet up with Matt Brigden, a qualifi ed instructor, for further insight into the sport and to have a trial lesson. The club is open to all ages and Matt suggested that I bring my children too.

Crawley sword Club was founded in 1954 by geoff griffi n. geoff is passionate about the sport and still plays an important role in the club today, sharing his expertise with club members.

The Club is affi liated to British Fencing and is governed by their rules and regulations. It is one of the few clubs in sussex to allow children to join as young as nine and there is no upper age limit. Indeed, on the evening that we joined the group, I was surprised to

see such a mixed age group. girls and boys are equally encouraged to join and there was a healthy mix of both.

sword fi ghting goes back many years and has been included as a sport in the Olympic games since they commenced in Ancient greece. To exceed in fencing, you must be physically fi t but also be mentally quick. You must have excellent co-ordination, balance, planning skills and fl exibility. These skills can be learnt at any time making the sport so accessible to all ages.

There are three weapons that can be used; Epee, sabre and Foil. In brief, Epee allows the entire body to be used as a target, sabre allows the entire body above the waist to be used as a target and Foil, the torso.

In our lesson, we were to learn with the Foil and to begin we needed to put on our protective gear and take up our swords. All participants taking the six week Introduction to Fencing course have free access to the Club’s fencing kit.

Once we were ‘kitted up’, Matt gave us a safety briefi ng. The swords are

made of solid steel and could do real damage if used incorrectly or without thought. we learned how to hold the weapon both in rest and in fi ght.

Matt asked Eleanor (who is an under 15 competitor with leon Paul junior series) to help show us beginners how to take up our stance (on guard) and how to move forward to start an attack. we did several practices of this, learning where our feet should be and how to hold our arms, both the sword arm and the resting arm. we then learnt how to parry and how to reposte. It took a little practice and I was guilty of moving my back foot all too often when it should have been still.

My son was doing very well as a left-hander and I learnt that most of the top fencers are left handed so I have high hopes for him as he gets older. Being only seven at the moment, he found it more exciting being a pirate than learning the skills of fencing(!) but he tried really hard.

My daughter was more of a natural and Matt seemed genuinely impressed with how she was taking his

instructions and putting it into practice. There was only so much we could

learn in one lesson, but we all felt that we could understand the sport more having tried it and learnt some of the language. It was quite hot with the safety gear we wore, so light tee-shirts and a bottle of water were a must.

I was lucky enough to catch up with a couple of the experienced fencers after my lesson. Firstly I met Jamie Briggs who is ranked 2nd in great Britain in the Under 9s. He took up the sport aged six, starting with a foam sword. His potential was soon recognised and he has now been fencing with steel for one and a half years. He has been to several competitions, his highest placings being at competitions in Truro and Cardiff where he was 1st. Asking him what he enjoyed about the sport, he answered immediately that it was fun. watching him practise, he certainly looked to be enjoying it.

I was then lucky enough to meet Dudley Tredger who has represented great Britain in two Commonwealth games fighting Epee and has won individual Bronze in both games, team silver in 2002 and team gold in 2010.

Dudley started fencing aged 10 at Crawley sword Club and his natural talent as well as hard work and dedication has got him far. He likes the fact that fencing contains two sides – the mental and the physical. Dudley is still actively competing and hopes to be at the British Championships in October. He has no plans at present to give the sport up, but when that time comes he will move into a coaching role.

Crawley sword Club teaches all 3 disciplines of fencing: Foil, Epee and sabre. They welcome people of all levels

of ability from beginners to gold medal winners! There are gradings that you can take, but these are not compulsory and you can chose when you do them. You do not have to be graded to enter competitions. These are purely for your satisfaction and to know your ability.

The club runs all year round, not closing for holidays, and they have members and visitors from all over sussex and surrey. They meet at the K2 on a Monday and wednesday night from 7-9pm. You go to which session you want per week, or both. The cost is the same.

The Introduction to Fencing course runs for six weeks and will give you a really good flavour of whether you enjoy the sport or not. And all equipment is provided for this course.

if you are interested in taking up the introduction course or joining the club, please look at the website www.crawleyswordclub.co.uk

Stella at rococo supplied a gorgeous handbag and bright summer dress. Perfect for summer, and easy to dress up and down for different occasions.

Tim at Simone’s created Ami’s beautiful curls using heated rollers and l’Oreal Pli spray which activates with the heat and provides volume and hold to the natural looking curls.

Molly and danielle from Mib used Carole Franck makeup to create a natural and stunning look for the summer, using neutral tones to let the clothes and hair speak for themselves.

‘Beige Dore’, a fl uid foundation was applied to the skin with a damp sponge, this helps to blend into every contour of the face. A transparent loose powder was patted into the foundation making a perfect base to work from. Next we used a coral tone powder blusher which was applied to the cheeks and temple, subtle smoky greys were used to create Ami’s soft eye effect. Kohl black eyeliner was used to emphasise Ami’s eye shape, followed by a black velvet mascara to further defi ne her lashes. ‘Coral Blush’ Carole Franck lipstick and lip liner were applied, these in particular really suited Ami, and contrasted well with her outfi t.

Award winning restaurant and bar located in our beautiful, historic town of steyning,

whites has turned Italian, offering fantastic fresh and simple food, Formerly a 15th century coaching inn and staging post on the road from Brighton to london. The grade II listed building, reputedly visited by Charles I and said to be haunted was badly destroyed by fi re in 1949. 60 years later, it was lovingly and sympathetically restored by owners David and george white.

we visited the new and revised whites Italian on a rainy Monday night, which didn’t remotely spoil our lovely evening in the slightest, despite sitting outside as had our lovely hound lexi with us! As the evening progressed the restaurant fi lled up ranging from young families to tables of older couples, a lovely mix and jolly, friendly, welcome ambience – great!

James who as the manager is at the helm of the white Horse, welcomed us and showed us The new menu which is a visual delight, really concise and eye catching with a bright and clear colour scheme, everything is easy to fi nd, what’s not easy is to choose however is your meal! with choices including the - wood-Fired steaks - Risotto - stone Baked Pizza - Fresh Pasta - Pesce - Primi - Olives - Toasted Focaccia - Dolce - gelato Fortunately for

us, the lovely James, took the decision out of our hands and offered to bring us a selection of a few of the dishes on offer, so we could get a varied taste of the new menu. with extra sides offered of freshly made fat chips / fat chips with parmesan and truffl e aioli polenta chips borrowed sisters garden herb salad and cheese focaccia with delicious planks to share consisting of Antipasti and Charcuterie delights all served with oils balsamic and breads we really wouldn’t have been able to decide for ourselves! The talented and able staff in the kitchen here has worked hard to put together an authentic and varied traditional menu which will truly appeal to all. Fantastically executed the staff has got it spot on.

To begin we tucked into the fresh and varied selection of bread and olives with oil and balsamic vinegar which was a nice start!

For our fi rst selection we tucked into Arancini, crispy pecorino risotto balls, with a tomato and pea salsa, Bruschetta bashed sun ripened tomatoes toasted focaccia and toasted peppers, and Tiger prawns, extra virgin olive oil, garlic, chilli and paprika, I cannot describe exactly how amazing the dishes smelt, we truly felt a bit like we were on holiday in

Italy (despite the rain!) the Tiger prawn dish is a local favourite and I can see why, it was truly divine, just the perfect amount of garlic to give that touch of the Mediterranean. we thoroughly enjoyed every mouthful and eagerly waited to see what we would be brought next well… My very favourite was the popular Frito misto, with a pea and red onion salad aioli, the freshest fi sh, and salad, with sublime fl avours, I tried to poach it all but had to share with Roger (boo!) Roger’s favourite was the Potato gnocchi confi t duck pecorino, peas which was also divine, truly scrumptious, and hearty! The pizza with Meatballs, prosciutto, chilli fl akes was great, with a fantastic homemade pizza dough, yum! You will never go back to the boxed variety after tasting this, I tell you, and we both loved the

fl avours in the giant Penne, capers, olives, anchovies and feta cheese, like the best putenesca you have ever tasted. Even though we had eaten so much we couldn’t stop eating but had to admit defeat! we absolutely couldn’t manage a dessert despite the menu being so tempting, boasting of such treats as Tiramisu, lemon and strawberrry cheesecake biscotti, and an italian cheese slate.

whites have indeed made a brave decision to change the successful formula they already had, but it’s paid off, in spades, the change merely opens the doors to a wider audience and is affordable to more, from your young couple out on a date, to a family celebration or a work occasion. so, for all you sceptics out there, stop musing, and go on, give it a try, it is just a change – and a welcome one at that, embrace it!

Go to the Whites website and have a look for yourself at the fantastic culinary treats on offer, plus a recipes page!

Your blood pressure is a measure of the pressure in your arteries as your heart pumps blood

around your body. It naturally changes throughout the day, depending on your emotional state and physical activity levels, but when it stays consistently too high over time it is known as high blood pressure or ‘hypertension’, which literally means ‘over pressure’.

High blood pressure accounts for 20-25% of all deaths worldwide and affects approximately one in three people worldwide. That’s over 16 Million people in the UK. High blood pressure and hypertension causes 62% of all strokes but almost half of all people with high blood pressure don’t realise they suffer from the condition and are thus at greater risk of having a stroke. Unfortunately, in 90% of cases of high blood pressure (the ‘Primary’ or ‘Essential’ Hypertension cases), doctors are unable to fi nd a physical cause – and that’s where a new and unique Hypnotherapy-based treatment called ‘The Hypnotension™ Programme’ can help, by helping clients to lower

their blood pressure naturally and cut the risk of stroke in half. Over 90% of high blood pressure cases have no clear medical cause, so doctors are only able to treat the symptoms rather than the underlying causes. Emotional and lifestyle factors exist that doctors simply don’t have the time or the resources to identify and create a unique plan of treatment for.

80% of all strokes are preventable and controlling blood pressure is a key to cutting the risk of stroke. The Hypnotension programme was developed for those with high blood pressure in mind. The programme carefully determines the individual needs of each client and a treatment is devised for that client that provides the most effective method of controlling high blood pressure.

The Hypnotension programme puts the patient back in control by identifying and addressing the lifestyle factors that contribute to hypertension. The programme uses cognitive techniques and behavioural coaching to make high blood pressure a thing of the past.

Anyone working within the Hypnotherapy programme, deals with a Certifi ed Hypnotherapy Practitioner, trained to help the client deal with the emotional and lifestyle factors that can contribute to high blood pressure. Progress is carefully monitored to ensure the best and most effective treatment possible. For more information and a comprehensive list of qualifi ed practitioners, please visit http://www.hypnotension.com/

Just a little round up for you this month of our top selling plants and trees of the moment; if you haven’t

already, please do come and have a browse, more about our extensive fl owers next month...

we have the biggest range in the UK from smaller cultivars, to ancient, magnifi cent specimen trees. we have gone to great lengths to only provide the best varieties that will thrive in the UK, and we will give expert advice to help you choose the best tree for your situation. As many of you know Olive trees are becoming regular sights in both private and commercial gardens.

we have always strived to research and provide the best possible range and quality of plants suitable for growing here in the UK. Right now at the nursery, we probably have the best selection this side of Tuscany from young trees right up to ancient gnarled specimens

we have a huge range of evergreen (and ever grey) plants. They give structure to your garden and can make a great architectural statement. A few examples are: Palms – Trachycarpus, Butia, Chamaerops and Brahea. Buxus, balls and pyramids. Phormiums and Cordylines, and Eriobotrya and Callistemon. The Bamboo is ‘romping away’, the new canes are

emerging daily and put on enormous growth overnight... just magical!

Deciduous plants are also looking wonderful. some great examples of these are the Tree Ferns; as they are shoot out their fantastic new fronds. we also have a huge range of smaller ferns – they are looking at their very best with new lush fronds too.

we have a great selection of beautiful ginkgo Trees – varieties and sizes, all looking at their very best now. Our Banana plants are looking good, something new and exciting for your garden!

The Hedyichiums – ginger lilies, are all emerging new, fl ower spikes. The nursery – and your gardens – will be looking lush and tropical all summer. For fl owers and colour, we have some fabulous Agapanthus – beautiful large heads of blue fl owers. Also some great Hydrangeas. ‘Zorro’ is one of our favourites, with stunning black stems and intense blue fl owers; they make great feature plants in your garden at this time of year. Hydrangea ‘Zorro Blue’ a stunning fairy recent introduction ‘Zorro Blue’ has deep reddish black stems. During summer these are topped with deep blue or purple blue fl owers, or on chalky soils a purple pink colour. like all macrophylla

hydrangeas a tough plant suitable for a wide range of conditions including seaside gardens. And to help you along with plant maintenance, in stock we have the amazing and natural seaweed extract is a fantastic fertiliser and plant food for all plants and vegetables. we offer an array of various fertilisers produced by a family in the shetland Isles. They use a renewable harvesting technique which is carefully monitored by a sustainable management plan, approved by scottish Natural Heritage.

The raw material “Ascophyllum nodosum” is a type of bladder weed which grows naturally in the area and is harvested manually from the beaches at low water. The harvesting operation is manually intensive and involves the seaweed being cut by hand with a knife, leaving suffi cient stalk to ensure re-growth. The seaweed is collected into baskets or nets which are transported by trailer to the processing area.

seaweed extract is a fantastic plant food, full of nutrients and high in trace elements. Endorsed and used by Big Plant Nursery, it is organic and sustainable. Add 25ml of this concentrated extract to 2 litres of water for fantastic plant food; a 500ml bottle can make a total of 80 litres of ready-to-use plant food.
