Hello. My name is ________________ and I am from the EDI-RF survey team assessing the livelihoods of small scale farmers. I would like to invite you to participate in this research study. The purpose of this study is to assess the farming activities, income sources, household assets, food security and child nutrition in order to find out how different farming activities may affect the livelihoods of small scale farmers. We hope that the information you give will help improve the work of extension officers, local government and NGO’s working with agriculture to the benefit of the small scale farmers. However, the purpose of this survey is not to offer assistance. Rather your participation can help us increase the common pool of knowledge about how agricultural activities affect livelihoods of small scale farmers. The interview will take about 60 minutes, maybe less. I will ask you and maybe also your spouse some questions about your family, school, agricultural activities, household assets and food security. I will also like to measure the children in your household less than seven years of age. All your answers will be kept private and fully confidential, and the only people that will have access to this information are the researchers involved in this study and those responsible for research oversight. That is, we will not show individual information to anyone, only overall survey results. No government officials, organizations, businesses or other people in your community will see your answers. All names will be deleted from the records as soon as all data collected is correctly organized. The survey will be conducted with 2,500 different households in Arusha, Meru and Karatu district. Your participation is entirely voluntary. If you like, you can end the interview at any time. Should you feel at any time that you are not comfortable answering a question or that confidentiality is not ensured, for example because someone else may be listening, please let us know. It is important to us that the information that you give us is handled with highest confidentiality.
