Cooking in the CanyonWeekly Recipe

Shepard’s PieIngredients1 bag frozen mixed veggies (ideal blend – green bean, peas, carrots and lima beans)1 packet instant mashed potatoes½ stick butter6 tablespoons flourSalt and pepper to taste2 packets bouillon beef powder1 pound ground beef1 small bag frozen cut corn (thawed out)2 cloves of garlic1 red onion2-3 tablespoons oil (canola or veggie)

instructions1.Heat up skillet on medium high heat. Add a couple tablespoons of oil and add ground beef. Break up and stir ground beef till brown. Drain fat. Sprinkle flour onto ground beef and throw in chopped garlic, diced onion, bouillon beef powder and salt and pepper to taste. Slowly add water to thicken. Bring to a boil (approximately 10 minutes) and then add frozen veggies and shut off heat.2. In the other saucepan, boil the proper amount of water that the instant mashed potato recipe calls for. Add butter and salt and pepper to boiling water. Throw in instant mashed potato mix and stir till thickened.3. In casserole dish, pour in and level our beef mixture. Make a second layer with the entire mashed potato mix. Top with cut corn. The dish is ready to eat; however you may stick the casserole dish into the over for 45 minutes at 275 F to heat through evenly.

THEME WEEK: alcohol awareness!Did you know that, according to the Core Institute, 300,000 of today's college students will eventually die of alcohol-related causes such as drunk driving accidents, cirrhosis of the liver, various cancers and heart disease? How about that the average student spends $900 on alcohol each year? That's more than double what the average student spends on books! Think before you drink--one night of heavy drinking can impair your ability to think abstractly for up to 30 days! Did these statistics surprise you? Then come educate yourself about the effects of alcohol and how you can have fun without it at our Mocktails & Music party Tuesday night at 7pm, the Open Mic Night this Thursday or at the Beer Goggle Golf Cart Driving event this Saturday!

THIS WEEK’S

Tips for

Success

Start your quarter off well!•Finalize your schedule – crash classes! Sign up for study groups! Create your weekly schedule with classes, labs, work, and meetings your have. Then, sit down with your syllabi and map out your assignments and exams to stay on top of everything.

•Get the facts – check your winter quarter grades! Are they what you expected? Do they align with what your calculations were? If not, talk to your professors to get them corrected. Also spend some time reflecting on what you did well, didn’t do as well on, and what you loved about your classes last quarter. Look to replicate and further that interest for your subject matter.

•Reconnect – stop by your friend’s apartment down the hall, touch base with your study group partners, or visit with your friends from intramurals. Make sure you take time to secure and reestablish your friendships with those important to you. Make a date to catch up over coffee at Peet’s or lounging by the pool.
