the 3rd annual Ideal Interiors Show, set up

at the rooftop parking area. Picture design-

centric exhibits from bathtubs to kitchen

counters, sofas and outdoor gardens – some

to see and some to take home. It was the

must-attend event of the year, but certainly

not the last. Read all about this and other

upcoming events in this issue.

Why it is important to rotate your tyres

Having hosted several women’s tyre

clinics, it is an honour for me to write

in the Village Beat. My aim is to discuss

tyre technology and safety and pass on tips

for a better driving experience. In the coming

issues, through this column, I will talk about

topics such as tyre pressure and condition, seat

belts (a necessity or a false sense of security?),

servicing your car and, of course, who are

better drivers, women or men?

With so many issues to discuss, it was hard to

select the fi rst topic. However, one in particular

has caused a lot of controversy among my peers,

both male and female:

If you were to replace only two tyres on your car,

which would they be, the front or rear? Most

people would answer: ‘front’. Right?

Wrong! It is a common misconception that the

best place to fi t new tyres is the front. I can

see some of you leaping from your seats and

shouting: “Of course it’s the front – that’s where

the braking force is!” or “That’s where the

maximum momentum is!” and so on.

Helpful advice

For the majority of road vehicles, the front axle is

where the steering occurs. This provides a useful

level of grip feedback to the driver. The rear

wheels are not connected to the steering column

and so judging their grip is almost impossible for

the average driver.

Michelin, one of the world’s leading tyre

manufacturers and innovators, recommends that

new tyres or those with the least wear should be

fi tted to the rear wheels to ensure:

• Better control in emergency braking or tight corners when roads are slippery

• Less risk of losing control of your vehicle, especially on wet surfaces

• Better road-holding, particularly in diffi cult situations, whether your car is front-wheel or rear-wheel drive.

With varying road conditions, braking forces,

steering and varying loads carried by the tyres, they

tend to wear out at different levels. A helpful and

benefi cial practice against this uneven wearing is tyre

rotation. Regularly changing the location of each

tyre on the vehicle helps extend their life by ensuring

even wear and improving performance. It is best to

get a professional tyre centre to visually inspect your

tyres and recommend the right rotation.

Michelin recommends that tyres are rotated every

six months or 10,000 to 13,000 km. It should be

noted that, if your car has a full-sized spare, this

should also be included in the rotation cycle.

PROFILER

When you meet Jared Obonyo at The

Village Market, you might think he

was just another member of the

public – a man in a black suit waiting for his

family to fi nish shopping before driving them

home. His calm, diplomatic demeanour says

nothing about the daunting task that is his

job. However, Jared recently earned the title of

Chief Security Offi cer at The Village Market.

His journey to the top began in 1996 when he

joined the company as a security offi cer.

“Back then the complex was much smaller, with

only Phase One of the mall complete,” he recalls.

“There were only seven security offi cers then,

who manned the entire complex.”

In 1998 The Village Market began a signifi cant

expansion process and, as the complex grew, so

did its workforce.

Team management

The number of Security Department staff rose

from a mere seven to 90 at the present time,

making it the Management’s largest department.

Added to this team are staff from the contracted

security fi rm KK, the Kenya Police and other arms

of security, working together to keep The Village

Market secure at all times.

The man whose job it is to coordinate this entire

security network is Jared Obonyo.

“It may appear diffi cult from the outside looking

in, but I enjoy what I do,” says the one-time

police offi cer.

Jared says his work is made easier by the support

he receives from the whole Management team,

who make sure he has the equipment he needs

to do his job. Even more important is the good

relationship his security team shares with the

majority of tenants, loyal shoppers, external

local and diplomatic security personnel as well as

contracted security company staff.

As with any other job, Jared’s work brings its fair

share of challenges – sometimes from unexpected

quarters. “There are customers who give my

security offi cers a diffi cult time,” he laments. “It

can be very demoralising, especially since each

member of my team is well trained in both matters

of security and customer care, and they try to do

their job for the safety of these same customers.”

Jared, who won the Employee of the Year

award last year, says he regards himself as more

of a father than a boss to his team. “I adopt a

democratic style of leadership and only become

authoritarian as a fi nal resort,” he says. “That way,

you attain more cooperation and participation

from the team, since they feel dignifi ed and

empowered to perform their duties without fear.”

Family man

When he’s not at work, the father-of-seven often

travels upcountry to spend time with his family.

When he’s in the city, he will spend his weekends

catching up with the local football scene or reading

novels. A teetotaller, he is also a regular church-goer.

Despite having time off, Jared says his phone is

always switched on, as he can be summoned to the

complex at any time to deal with security issues.

Regarding the looming security threat to

Kenya since late last year, Jared says that the

Management has always been prepared. “The

security situation has only been heightened, and

all we can do is heighten our security measures,”

he says.

Since taking over the helm at the Security Department,

Jared is pleased to note that customers have become

more cooperative when being searched at the

entrances. “They have come to understand why

these checks are necessary, and some even give us

information when they notice any suspicious activity.”

On a fi nal note, Jared urges all Village Market

customers, tenants and staff to be ever-vigilant,

pointing out that security is as much an individual

effort as a community concern.

Arthritis is characterised by an insidious

pain that makes mobility a painful

affair and can leave the person

crippled in the long run. When inflammation

of the joints persists, it sets in degenerative

changes in the affected weight-bearing joints

of the spine, hips, knees, ankles and fingers..

The factors that trigger arthritis are explained briefly:

Deficient diet. Calcium is the most predominant

mineral that is required for the strength of the

bones. Calcium, being a hard mineral, needs

the help of other minerals such as magnesium,

potassium and Vitamin D for proper uptake into

the body. Calcium is found mainly in natural foods.

Therefore, a well-balanced diet is required; but all

products consumed should be as natural as possible

to get the maximum nutrients – for example, using

whole grain cereal instead of refined cereals.

Indigestion. Certain biological changes that cause

calcification of the bones (build-up of insoluble

calcium salt) leading to arthritis are caused by

indigestion. When the acid level increases in the

stomach (acidosis), the sodium in the walls of the

stomach is insufficient to buffer off the acid level,

so it takes the sodium from the joints (second-

largest reserve). When such a withdrawal of sodium

occurs often, it may develop calcification.

Certain foods and drugs may slow the absorption

of the calcium necessary for healthy bones. Arthritis

is best prevented by an adequate intake of calcium-

rich foods and Vitamin D, naturally available

through sunlight.

A Publication of The Vil lage Market // April - May 2012

Managing arthritis

Page 13: Village Beat Magazine. April-May 2012

11

Certain foods and supplements may help prevent

or delay the onset of arthritis or minimise its

damage and should be included in the diet:

• Green (alkaline) vegetables and their juices

• Flax seed oil

• Raw, unsalted nuts and seeds, particularly

sesame and almonds

• Nutritional supplements such as calcium,

magnesium, Vitamin D, Vitamin K2, strontium

citrate and boron. Alfalfa contains all minerals

essential for bone health.

• Glucosamine and chondroitin are nutrients

that can be obtained as supplements. These

substances are important in the formation of

bones, tendons, ligaments, cartilage and synovial

(joint) fluid.

• Essential fatty acids in the form of Omega 3 and

6 reduce inflammation in the joints.

Certain acidic foods and substances that interfere

with calcium absorption:

• Nicotine products

• Carbonated sodas, alcohol and caffeinated drinks

• Excessive salt and sugar

• Red meat and dairy products.

Red meat and dairy products interfere with the

absorption of calcium because they contain high

amounts of protein. The more protein a person

consumes, the less calcium is absorbed by the body.

Increasing calcium intake or decreasing protein

intake can help offset this dietary imbalance.

Herbs

Various herbal remedies have been used effectively

in the naturopathic treatment of arthritis, including

drynaria root (Drynaria fortunei), used to nourish

the kidneys and strengthen bones, and red clover

(Trifolium pratense), prevents breakdown of existing

bone mass.

Absence of mental poise. Arthritis is a psychosomatic

Hydrotherapy is used extensively in naturopathic

THE ELEPHANT WHISPERER Author: lawrence Anthony

THE LOST KINGDOMS OF AFRICAAuthor: Gus Casely-Hayford

Price: KES 1,800

For many of us, the history of Africa is, at best, vague. We might think of Egyptian pyramids, legendary queens and Zulu warriors. The truth, of course, is much more diverse, creative and culturally rich. In ‘The Lost Kingdoms of Africa’, Gus Casely-Hayford takes us on a fascinating journey through the history of this remarkable continent. We encounter archaeological sites of staggering beauty that rival the Great Wall of China, vast and ancient universities that predate Oxford and Cambridge, kingdoms of extraordinary wealth, artistic traditions that still inspire artists today, great religious sites that surpass the Vatican, and a country with more pyramids than Egypt.

When South African conservationist Lawrence Anthony was asked to accept a heard of ‘rogue’ wild elephants on his Thula Thula game reserve in Zululand, his common sense told him to refuse. But he was the herd’s last chance of survival. Dangerous and unpredictable, they would be killed if Anthony failed to take them in. As he risked his life to create a bond with the troubled elephants and persuade them to stay on his reserve, Anthony came to realise what a special family they were – from the wise matriarch, Nana, who guided the herd, to her warrior sister, Frankie, always ready to see off any threat, to their children, who fought so hard to survive. With unforgettable characters and exotic wildlife, this enthralling book will appeal to animal lovers and adventurous souls everywhere.

THE FLYING MANAuthor: roopa farooki

Price: KES 1,680

ONE DAY I’LL WRITE ABOUT THIS PLACEAuthor: Binyavanga Wainaina

Price: KES 2,250

Binyavanga Wainaina won the 2002 Caine Prize for African Writing. In this vivid and compelling memoir, Wainaina takes us through his school days, his mother’s religious period, his failed attempt to study commerce in South Africa, a moving family reunion in Uganda, and his travels around Kenya. The landscape in front of him always claims his main attention, but he evokes the shifting political scene that unsettles his views on family, tribe and nationhood. Resolutely avoiding stereotype and cliché, Wainaina paints every scene with a highly distinctive and hugely memorable brush.

Meet Maqil – also known as Mike, Mehmet, Mikhail and Miguel – a character and charlatan. A criminally clever man who tells a good tale, trading on his charm and good looks, reinventing himself with a new identity and nationality in each successive country where he makes his home, abandoning wives and children and careers in the process. He’s a compulsive gambler, driven to lose at least as much as he gains, in games of chance and in life. A damaged man in search of himself. 'The Flying Man' is an affecting, evocative and often funny story of the ultimate immigrant, a man who fi ts in everywhere and nowhere, who cannot help but cause harm to those around him, but who ultimately inspires love.

Third annual Ideal Interiors Show 2012

The third annual Ideal Interiors Show was

held at The Village Market from

7 to 11 March.

The show gave both participants and Village Market

shoppers a chance to catch up with the latest design

trends, new products, materials, appliances and

what consumers want for their homes.

'Celebrating Your Space'

This year’s show, entitled ‘Celebrating Your Space’,

featured international design houses, locally

based suppliers and designers displayed their best

interior wares for home, office and garden.

The official opening was presided over by Philip

Sika, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of

Metropolitan Development, who noted the event’s

growth over the years in his keynote address.

Other speeches were delivered by the event

director, Humphrey Odhiambo, and by the event

host, Hamed Ehsani, managing director of

The Village Market.

In his speech, Mr Odhiambo described the event as

a feast of exciting ideas, saying it was an opportunity

for both exhibitors and visitors to engage.

On his part, Mr Ehsani thanked the organisers for

once again choosing The Village Market as an ideal

venue for the interiors expo. “The Village Market

as a host is happy to be part of a transformation

that seeks to introduce a concentration of trendy,

design-centric exhibits,” he said.

The Ideal Interiors Show culminated in a gala

night presided over by Kenya's Vice President, the

Hon. Kalonzo Musyoka, accompanied by several

Government officials and Members of Parliament.

Awards

During the evening cocktail event, several

exhibitors received awards in different categories.

The night’s biggest winner was Ideal Ceramics,

whose immaculate display saw them clinch several

awards in the Kitchen and Bathroom category.

The awards recognise excellence in the design,

construction and installation of kitchens and

bathrooms in the region today.

The Ideal Interiors Show is a thought-provoking

event and one-stop lifestyle experience, with

high display standards and a dazzling range of

creative interiors for both private and commercial

properties. It is an ideal opportunity for both

participants and show attendants to catch up with

the latest design trends, new products, materials,

appliances and interiors in the market.

The premium leisurewear fashion label

One Way is well known for creating

authentic and captivating African

designs for the casual clothing aficionado. This

renowned label is manufactured by Straight

Line Enterprises Ltd, the brainchild of founder

and managing director Permod Malhotra.

By focusing on quality and adapting designs to the

environment in which it operates, the company

has steadily risen to become a real force in the

East African fashion industry. Thirty per cent of

One Way’s production is for the East African

market while 70 per cent is exported.

T-shirts were the first in a series of lines introduced

by One Way. The product range has expanded

rapidly to include safari wear, fleeces, kikoys (also

known as kikoy sarongs) towels, caps and linen.

New Poa collection

One Way has launched a new collection called Poa

(a colloquial Kenyan term for ‘nice’). This unique

range of original designs and styles of casualwear

depicts the mood and vibrancy of Africa.

The Poa fashion line is especially suitable for

summer and hot weather. The range includes

T-shirts, polo shirts and men’s sultana shirts as

well as women’s tops.

What makes it so good

The garments are made from 100 per cent

combed, high-grade cotton, thus forming a

higher count yarn. The fabric is finer and softer

and designed to dispense moisture quickly from

the body. Stitching is more enforced, making the

garment more durable. Overall weight is much

lower compared with similar outfits in the market

owing to the high count yard. Although there is no

Lycra or elastic in the fabric, the risk of shrinking is

minimal. The outfits are easy to wash, by hand or

machine, and easy to iron. Moreover, the garment

fits perfectly and feels comfortable on the skin.

You can buy a Poa outfit at:

icture a group of just eight luxury

cottages made of canvas and local

hardwood. Add a beautiful swimming

pool, a relaxing and comfortable public area

and plenty of nature trails through private

land, and you have a perfect base from which

to venture into one of Kenya’s most scenic

parks. This is what makes Rhino River Camp

such a quiet and exclusive retreat.

Meru National Park

Rhino River Camp is on the western border of Meru

National Park, 200 miles north-east of Nairobi,

on the banks of the Kindani River. Affectionately

known as Kenya’s complete wilderness, Meru

National Park contains an abundance of wildlife,

from rare exotic birds to big game such as elephant,

lion, cheetah and leopard and, of course, the

famously free-roaming rhino. The park is also home

to reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, gerenuk and

oryx – animals rarely seen in other parts of Kenya

or, for that matter, East Africa.

An environment that is normally dry, like most

of northern Kenya, is transformed by the 13

perennial rivers flowing through it. Originating

in the Nyambeni Hills to the west, these rivers

are the main reason for the park’s spectacular

diversity of wildlife and landscapes.

Canvas cottages

Inside Rhino River Camp, guests can enjoy the

sights and sounds of over 180 species of colourful

birds, together with resident mammals that

include Syke’s monkey, baboon, dik dik, bush

baby, porcupine and the occasional bushbuck.

The canvas cottages of Rhino River Camp are set

among the trees of the pristine forest bordering

the Kindani River. Spacious, comfortable and

blending in with the forest, they make a perfect

retreat and an ideal location from which to enjoy

the living, breathing environment of the forest.

Each room has a view over the river and its huge

raffia palms, yellow fever trees and tamarinds.

The cottages are scattered along the river bank. Each

enjoys its own unimpeded view, thus ensuring a private

and peaceful place to stay in a highly romantic setting.

Rhythms of life

There is a range of activities on and off camp,

including bush walks, fishing, mountain biking,

massages, birdwatching and visits to the villages of

the peaceful and friendly Meru people. Every activity

is an opportunity to enjoy the wonderful scenery

and rhythms of life that are classically African.

Four-wheel-drive vehicles and professional guides

are on hand so that guests can explore the

bush at their own pace and experience a vivid

personal connection with the magnificent local

wildlife. Seen in their natural habitat, the animals

of Meru offer the visitor a wonderful experience

of African wilderness and raw, unspoilt nature,

complemented by the beautiful landscape.

Once you have worked up an appetite, you

can enjoy fine cuisine prepared by the camp’s

experienced chefs, either in the camp or al fresco.

Getting there

Rhino River Camp can be reached by car on a

sealed tarmac road, arriving at the main gate

of Meru National Park, or by a scheduled or

chartered flight, landing inside the park, with a

complimentary 40-minute transfer to the camp.

This scenic journey offers many visitors their first

glimpse of the area’s big game.

Meru is famous as the one-time home of Elsa the

lioness, of ‘Born Free’ fame. Lions are still there,

of course, and some of these could be heirs of the

world’s most famous lioness.
