Viking Rune Scrolls By: Herrin Emeludt (Elisabeth) Hänsler This is a simple project for a Viking themed Children’s AcEviEes. This handout has everything you will need to get this project ready for your next Children’s AcEviEes. To begin you will need the following items: Guide sheet comparing the Viking runes to the English alphabet Individual runes on small pieces of paper Scroll blanks Markers and/or crayons Blank paper Glue sEcks 1. Go over the Viking runes with the children and explain that it was an alphabet used by the early Germanic tribes. 2. Have the children select the scroll blank they want to use or provide blank paper to the children that want to create their own scroll. 3. Pass out copies of the runic alphabet and English alphabet. Discuss the alphabets with the children. Explain that that they are going to make scrolls for themselves or anyone they want using the runic alphabet, for those that need or want help, the volunteers will help them spell out the words they wish to spell out. 4. Allow the younger children to glue down the runes aUer they have been arranged in the order they request. The older children, or any who wish to, may write out the runes on their scroll blanks. 5. Once the pieces are glued in place and/or the runes have been wriYen out, allow the children Eme to color and decorate their scrolls. 6. The children may present the scrolls to whomever they wish, they may also be hung up for everyone to see and enjoy and have the child take it home before they leave the event.
