76 VIII. Armeekorps (VIII Army Corps)
The VIII Army Corps was formed in 1935 as a corps and corps-area head-quarters. It fought in Poland in 1939 and in the West in 1940. InJune 194-1 the corps advanced in the central sector of the eastern frontvia Grodno-Vitebsk-Demidov-Smolensk, approaching Moscow. In November1941 it was transferred to France for regrouping, reorganization, andfurther training, returning to the Russian front in March 1942 for as-signment to the Izyum-Kharkov area in the southern sector. Late in194-2 the corps was operating in the Stalingrad area and was destroyedthere. Reformed as Corps Hb'hne in March 1943, it was engaged in thenorthern sector in the Lake Ilmen area, along the line Vitebsk-Kholm-Staraya Russa and along the Velikaya River. In early 1944- the corpswithdrew to Kovel near the Polish border and later crossed theVistula River into Poland,
