operation and useOperationVigirex relays are designed for use on lowvoltage AC installations. When the residualcurrent detected by the toroid exceeds acertain threshold, referred to as the residualoperating current In, the Vigirex relay tripsthe associated circuit breaker via a voltagerelease on the breaker. The control signal issued by the relay maybe instantaneous or delayed.Depending on the model, the operatingthresholds and time delays may or may notbe adjustable.

UseVigirex relays are used on low voltage ACinstallations with TT, IT or TNS systemearthing arrangements for voltages up to1000 V AC and frequencies up to 400 Hz.They are particularly well suited for use withCompact and Masterpact circuit breakersequipped with voltage releases.

The choice of the right Vigirex relay model fora given application depends on the type ofprotection required:c additional protection against direct contact;c protection against indirect contact;c protection against fire hazards;c source ground fault protection;c motor protection. These five types of protection are covered bystandards and correspond to different currentthresholds and time delays on the products.

Vigirex:earth fault protectionThe purpose of earth fault protection is tomeasure the earth leakage current of anelectrical installation, or part of aninstallation, and interrupt the supply of powerif this current becomes dangerous to life orproperty.Vigirex is a range of earth fault relays withseparate toroids, a solution offering bothflexibility and performance.

functionsDiscrimination and settingsc discriminationDiscrimination consists in:v dividing the installation into a number ofgroups of circuits and protecting each groupwith an appropriate residual current device,v coordinating the upstream and downstreamdevices such that only the faulty section isshut down.

c settingsDiscrimination is said to be total if theprotection devices meet two conditions:v the non-operating current of the upstreamdevice is higher than the operating current ofthe downstream device,v the non-operating time of the upstreamdevice is longer than the operating time of thedownstream device.

Vigirex relays can be set to obtain up to eightlevels of discrimination, extending from thefinal outgoers up to the circuit breaker at thehead of installation.

I∆n/2 alarm thresholdVigirex type AP relays have an alarmthreshold that warns of a non-criticaldegradation of the insulation, leaving time tocarry out preventive maintenance. The alarm threshold is set automatically atIn∆/2, where I∆/n is the residual operatingcurrent. The alarm is indicated by a LED and operatesan auxiliary contact.

Auxiliary power alarmLoss of the auxiliary power supplying Vigirexrelays is indicated by a LED on the front ofthe device and by the operation of a fail-safealarm contact.

Indication and protectionVigirex relays are available in two versions:c without earth fault memory: indication only.Non-latching relay;c with earth fault memory: indication andcircuit breaker tripping. Latching relay.

standardsc IEC 364 ch 4 and 5;c IEC 755;c IEC 947.2 appendix B;c UTE C 60-130;c VDE 664;c NF C 61-141 ad. 1;c NF C 15-100.

toroidsVigirex relays are used with closed (type A,diameter 30 to 300 mm) or split (type OA,diameter 46 to 110 mm) toroids. All toroidsare easy to mount due to a wide range ofinstallation possibilities.

RH type A/AP relays

operationUsed in conjunction with a standardMerlin Gerin toroid (type A or OA), this typeof relay trips the associated switchingdevice, after the selected time delay, when itdetects a residual current above the setresidual operating current (I∆n). The APversion also issues an alarm when theresidual current exceeds half the residualoperating current (i.e. I∆n/2).

Characteristicsc green LED indicates presence of auxiliarypower;c red LED indicates the trip threshold hasbeen exceeded;c orange LED indicates the alarm thresholdhas been exceeded (AP);c failure of the detection circuit (connectingcable and toroid) trips the circuit breaker.

Advantagesc protection can be adapted to anyinstallation;c vertical discrimination possible over anumber of levels;c an alarm threshold provides a warning ofa non-critical degradation of the insulation, leaving time to carry out preventivemaintenance;c auxiliary power alarm via fail-safe contact.

installationc live part in a disconnectable, insulatingmoulded case, eight 9 mm modules wide, with sealable transparent cover;c horizontal or vertical flush or surfacemounting on a symmetrical rail;c connection by tunnel terminals for wiresizes:v 1.5 mm2 for terminals 1 to 6;v 2.5 mm2 for terminals 7 to 14.

immunity to lineovercurrentsLine overcurrents due to motor starting ortransformer switching may causeunnecessary tripping of residual currenttype relays. This can be avoided by a few very simpleprecautions with cumulative effects:c place the toroid on a straight section ofcable;c centre the cable in the toroid;c use a toroid with a much larger diameterthan the cable going through it2 x dia (fig.1).

For very severe operating conditions, theuse of a mild steel sleeve placed around thecable inside the toroid considerablyincreases immunity.Recommended characteristics:c mild steel foil 0.1 mm thick to be wrappedseveral times around the cable inside thetoroid (minimum thickness 1 mm);c inner diameter of the toroid > 1.4 x outerdiameter of the cable bundle (fig. 2).

implementationof residual current devices (RCDs)

The use of residual current devices isdescribed below according to the type ofelectrical system (TT, TN or IT).Protection of sensitive locations against firehazards must also be considered. For such locations, a residual current devicewith a residual operating current i 300 mAshould be provided at the head of the feederconcerned.

introduction

TT systems exposed conductive parts interconnected and connectedto the same earthing electrode

1. Condition satisfiedA single device at the head of the installationis sufficient to ensure protection againstelectric shock. Its residual operating current is selectedaccording to the resistance of the earthingsystem.

2. Condition not satisfiedThis is the case in particular in installationswhere the loads are far apart. It is essential to have:c one RCD per group of interconnectedexposed conductive parts;c one RCD at the head of the installation, unless the head circuit breaker and the maincircuit breakers are in the sameswitchboard or in switchboards located nextto one another (or linked by a class IIconnection).

Horizontal discriminationThis technique consists of transferring theresidual current protection from the head ofthe installation to the downstream feeders:in this case, power is cut only on the faultyfeeder. It is not possible unless the headcircuit breaker and the main circuit breakersare in the same switchboard or inswitchboards located next to one another (orlinked by a class II connection).

Vertical discriminationDownstream of the head circuit breaker, themain circuit breakers are provided withRCDs. In this case, power is cut only on thefaulty feeder, subject to compliance with thefollowing rules:I∆nA > 2 x I∆nB,T no A > T brk B,I∆nA and I∆nB are the residual operatingcurrents of RCDs A and B,T no A = non operating time of A,T brk B = total break time of B (including thetime due to the switching device).

1. Condition not satisfiedc substation earthing system not connectedto exposed conductive parts: place an RCDat the head of the installation;c exposed conductive parts notinterconnected:place an RCD on each group of exposedconductive parts. To be supplemented by anRCD at the head of the installation unlessthe head circuit breaker and the main circuitbreakers are in the same switchboard or inswitchboards located next to one another (orlinked by a class II connection).

Note: CIM is insulation monitoring device.

2. Condition satisfiedProtection against electric shock in the eventof a double fault is provided by theovercurrent protection.Residual current devices must be used inthe following cases:c feeder with excessive cable length;c circuit supplying portable equipment (suchas socket outlet circuits);c circuit where there is a risk of theprotective conductor breaking.

Safety against electric shock is ensured bythe overcurrent protection. Residual currentdevices must be used in the following cases:c feeder with excessive cable length;c circuit supplying portable equipment (suchas socket outlet circuits);c circuit where there is a risk of theprotective conductor breaking.

consequences of aninsulation fault

ReminderAn insulation fault occurs when a liveconductor - phase or neutral - comes incontact with an exposed conductive part(e.g. motor casing).

ConsequencesThe consequences depend upon the type ofelectrical system (TT, IT or TN) used in theinstallation or part of installation concerned.Such faults create hazards to life and property.

TT systems An insulation fault between phase and earthcauses a current flow which is limited inpractice only by the earthing resistances Rnand RA. Hazardous voltages exist on theexposed conductive parts. The fault currentis a few amperes.

Tripping is essential.

In the example opposite, with the followingvalues for RA and Rn.RA = 20 Ω ; Rn = 10 Ω.The fault current is 7.3 (220 V/30 ohms) andthe voltage Ud on the exposed conductiveparts is 147 V.

The fault current depends on the insulationimpedance (Zct) of the installation in normaloperation. As this impedance is high by its nature, thefault current is relatively low. The same istrue for the voltage on the exposedconductive parts.

Tripping is unnecessary. The fault must be reported, located andeliminated. In this example, with Zct = 3500 ohms(case of a 1 km installation). The fault current is 62 mA (220 V/3500 ohms). The touch voltage Uc between the twosimultaneously accessible exposedconductive parts depends on the resistanceRAB of link AB.In an extreme case where RAB = 2 ohms,Uc = 2 x 0.062 = 0.124 V.

If a second fault occurs before the first faulthas been cleared, it rapidly becomes a shortcircuit between phases (or between phaseand neutral), with the followingconsequences:c the exposed conductive parts carry a highvoltage;c the fault current is equal to the short-circuitcurrent.

Tripping is essential. The initial voltage on the busbar supplyingthe two feeders must be estimated at80 percent of the nominal voltage betweenphases. As the loop impedance is 99 milliohms(neglecting the reactances), the fault currentis equal to 3070 A (380 x 0.8/0.099).The touch voltage Uc is equal to half theinitial voltage, i.e.: 0.8 x 380/2 = 152 V.

An insulation fault results in a short-circuitbetween phase and neutral. The resulting current flow is high. Theexposed conductive parts are at ahazardous voltage.

Tripping is essential.

The initial voltage on the faulty feeder mustbe estimated at 80 percent of the nominalvoltage between phase and neutral. Thetouch voltage Uc is equal to half 0.8 x 220 V,i.e. 88 V.

useful definitions

The definitions below are intended forpractical purposes only and do not claim tobe exhaustive or theoretical.

Protective conductor PEConductor used for protection againstindirect contact and for interconnectingexposed conductive parts:c to one another;c to extraneous conductive parts;c to earthing electrodes or earthed parts. The presence of switchgear on suchconductors is prohibited.

Residual currentRoot-mean-square vector sum of thecurrents flowing through all the liveconductors. It is equal to zero in theabsence of an insulation fault. In case of aninsulation fault, the residual current is theleakage current returned to thesource through the earth and the protectiveconductor. For the value of I∆n, see residual operatingcurrent.

Residual current device (RCD)A device that opens the associatedswitchgear when it detects a residual currentabove its residual operating current I∆n (seeresidual current).

Residual operating current (I ∆n)Value of the residual current which causes aresidual current device to operate.

Service voltagePreferred term: rated operating voltage. The rated operating voltage Ue of a systemis the voltage which, together with the ratedcurrent of the system, determines the load. For three-phase systems, it is the voltagebetween phases.

Shock protection deviceThis device must automatically separatefrom the source any part of theinstallation on which there is a faulthazardous to life.Depending on the system earthing arrange-ment of the installation, this device is eithera residual current device (characterised byI∆n, its residual operating current, and itstotal break time) or an overcurrent device(fuse or circuit breaker).

break timeTotal time from fault detection to completearc extinction.

Time delayIntentional delay before operation of adevice. The time delay on operation of an upstreamcircuit breaker allows time discriminationwith the downstream circuit breaker. The time delay, which is voluntary, shouldnot be confused with the break time of adevice which is intrinsic to the device.

Touch voltageVoltage in case of an insulation faultacross simultaneously accessible parts.

Uc = f(t) safety curveUc = f(t) is the maximum voltage that thehuman body can withstand for a givenperiod of time, depending on externalconditions (nature of the premises, presenceof water, etc. - see NF C 15-100,Sec. 481.1.1, table 48A).

Direct contactContact of persons with the normally liveparts of electrical equipment.

DiscriminationCoordination of the automatic switchingdevices such that only the faulty part of theinstallation is cut off by opening of the devicelocated immediately upstream of the fault.

Double insulationinsulation including both:c basic insulation required for protectionagainst direct contact, andc supplementary insulation required forprotection against indirect contact in caseof a fault of the basic insulation.

Exposed conductive partAny accessible metal part of an electricalequipment item other than the live parts andwhich can accidentally become live.

Fault (electrical)Accidental connection between two points atdifferent potentials, such as aninsulation fault. A fault may be solid or mayexhibit a certain impedance. A solid faultbetween live conductors is a short circuit.A distinction is made between phase-exposed conductive parts, phase-earth,phase-phase, phase-neutral, neutral-exposed conductive parts and neutral-earthfaults.

Fault voltageVoltage, in case of an insulation fault, across an exposed conductive part and anearthing reference, i.e. a point on which thevoltage is not modified when the exposedconductive part becomes live.

Indirect contactContact of persons with exposed conductiveparts accidentally live due to an insulationfault.

Insulation voltagePreferred term: rated insulation voltage. Therated insulation voltage of an assembly isthe voltage characterising it and used asreference for the dielectric tests, the isolatingdistances and the creepage distance.

Live conductorConductor used for transmission of electricalpower during normal operation (including theneutral conductor).

PEN conductorIn a TNC system, acts both as neutralconductor and as protective conductor(size u 10 mm2).The presence of switchgear on suchconductors is prohibited.
