Mad Cow Theatre was founded on the belief that the theatre is a dynamic and powerful means of social understanding, as well as a hugely entertaining art form.

Through the combination of passionate, skillful acting and compelling, insightful writing, nurtured by an attentive and ever-changing process, Mad Cow presents entertaining works of theatre to an ever-widening audience — promoting, enhancing and celebrating the human condition through art.

Mad Cow Theatre is supported in part with public funds from the united Arts campaign and by the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs, and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture, The Florida Arts Council, The National Endowment for the Arts, The Downtown Development Board, and Orange County Government through the Arts & Cultural Affairs Program. A great nation deserves great art!

Mad Cow is a 501(c)3 organization and welcomes all donations including funds, materials, time and good will. We are especially delighted when audience members bring others to share the theatrical experience.

DAVID IVES (Playwright) is perhaps best known for his evening of one-act plays, All in the Timing (he has been included in the Best Short Plays series seven times), and for his drama Venus in Fur, which was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play. His plays include New Jerusalem: The Interrogation of Baruch De Spinoza (adapted from Molière’s The Misanthrope); The Liar (adapted from Corneille); Time Flies; and Is He Dead? (adapted from Mark Twain). He has also translated Feydeau’s A Flea in Her Ear and Yasmina Reza’s A Spanish Play A former Guggenheim Fellow in play writing and a graduate of The Yale School of Drama, he lives in New York City.

THe orIGInaL VENUS IN FURS In the play, the character Thomas mentions the inspiration for his adaptation, Leopold von Sacher-Masoch’s Venus in Furs. The novella, published in 1870, contains a story within a story: A man is telling his friend Severin of a dream he has in which he talks to the goddess Venus – while she wears furs – about love. Severin recommends that the man read Memoirs of a Suprasensual Man in order to cure him of his fascination with cruel women.

Memoirs of a Suprasensual Man tells the tale of Severin von Kusiemski, who is infatuated with a woman named Wanda von Dunajew. He desires to be her slave, asking to be treated in progressively more degrading ways. At first Wanda is reluctant to obey his requests, but she does so to humor him, eventually discovering that she does indeed enjoy the control she has over him.

VENUS IN FURS In popULar cULTUre Leopold von Sacher -Masoch’s novella, Venus in Furs, has inspired a lot more than just David Ives’ play. A well-known pop culture reference is the Velvet underground’s song Venus in Furs, which includes lyrics that directly allude to the book, such as “Severin, your servant, comes in bells, please don’t forsake him.”
