Advent Prayer for the First Sunday of Advent…..Blessed are you, sovereign Lord, God of our ancestors: to you be praise and glory for ever. You called the patriarchs to live by the light of faithand to journey in the hope of your promised fulfilment. May we be obedient to your calland be ready and watchful to receive your Christ, a lamp to our feet and a light to our path;for you are our light and our salvation.Blessed be God for ever.

Thought for this week….by Rev. Michelle MartinThis week is the beginning of Advent and in churches all over the world, people will be lighting the first candles of their Advent Rings. The first candle of our Advent ring represents The Patriarchs – The Fathers of our Faith. As we begin our journey through Advent, we have much to learn from those who have gone before us, including those whose earthly journeys were thousands of years before our own.

When we look to the Old Testament stories of the Patriarchs, and the journeys made by our Jewish Ancestors, including those of Abraham, Jacob and Isaac, we are reminded of the paths they walked; paths which were often difficult, risky, filled with grief, challenges and hardships; paths that sometime feel so similar to our own.

Page 3: stjohnsfishponds.files.wordpress.com · Web viewwho has sadly passed away and pray for her family and ... there will be a run-through of the script at ... Rehearsals will begin after

And yet, we see how those paths were walked with such courage and determination. The Patriarchs recognised the greatness of God, his power to act in the moment, and his great love for his people. They trusted him. It is here they found the strength to continue, even when the path was tough. So, as we set out on our own Advent journey deeper into the life of God, let us make that journey with the same determination and courage, trusting in Gods power to act now and in his love for us. We too can make great steps when we only trust. Amen. Special notices and upcoming events for all…….
