WHEREAS: This City Council was deeply saddened at learning of the death of Santo “Sam” Cassia on February 10, 2002; and
WHEREAS: Santo was the beloved husband of the late Johanna “Jennie” (Verro) and Elly (Chorzewski) Cassia; and
WHEREAS: Santo’s passing will leave a void in the lives of all his surviving family, his daughters Johanne Cassia-Wiedenmann and her husband Francis, Mary J. Masse and her husband Joseph, Catherine Scalise and her husband Michael; his son Joseph Cassia and his wife Linda; and
WHEREAS: Santo will be sorely missed by all he touched and loved; now therefore be it
RESOLVED: That this City Council go on record extending its deepest sympathy to the family of Santo “Sam” Cassia at this time of such personal loss; and be it further

WHEREAS: The Writers of Color Workshop, a program conceived at the 1991 National Writer’s Union, meeting twice monthly at the Cambridge Public Library, has compiled and published their first anthology of African-American poetry and prose entitled “Life In Our Own Words”; and
WHEREAS: The Writers of Color Workshop will present a reading from the anthology on February 28, 2002 at 7:00 p.m. at the Cambridge Public Library; now therefore be it
RESOLVED: That the City Council go on record to congratulate members of the Writers of Color Workshop on their compilation of works; and be it further

WHEREAS: February 6, 2002 marked the first-ever Bread & Circus Natural Pie Challenge, a pie baking contest between students from the culinary program at Rindge School of Technical Arts and Somerville High School; and
WHEREAS: The contest featured twenty-two pies prepared and baked by the students, competing in the areas of best apple pie, most creative pie, and best of show; and
WHEREAS: Mia Velasquez, Stephanie Quinn, Mia Gralla, Kristen Sullivan, Tarik Yeasir, and Andy Cyders, all students at Cambridge Rindge and Latin, participated in the Natural Pie Challenge; and
WHEREAS: Tarik Yeasir was awarded first prize for his apple pie and Andy Cyders was awarded second prize for creativity; and
WHEREAS: Both Tarik Yeasir and Andy Cyders shared the title of Best of Show; now therefore be it
RESOLVED: That the City Council go on record congratulating members of the CRLS culinary team in their resounding victory in the Natural Pie Challenge; and be it further

WHEREAS: It has come to the attention of the Cambridge City Council that the Harvard Bookstore is celebrating its seventieth anniversary; and
WHEREAS: The original Harvard Book Store was founded 70 years ago in 1932 by Mark Kramer, a Boston native, with $300 borrowed from his parents. When he married two years later, his wife Pauline joined him in the business. The original inventory was comprised entirely of remainders; and
WHEREAS: When Mark died unexpectedly in 1962, his son Frank took over the reins at the age of 20; and
WHEREAS: Over the last forty years the company has operated ten different bookstores serving every aspect of the book-buying marketplace. Between 1980 and 1994 the innovative Harvard Book Store Café on Boston’s famed Newbury Street provided a haven and meeting place for New England writers and art lovers; and
WHEREAS: Over the last seventy years the Harvard Book Store has evolved into a landmark literary and scholarly bookstore. Remainders and used books now make up about 20% of sales and the unique inventory appeals primarily to a well read and demanding clientele; and
WHEREAS: The Harvard Book Store is also a good neighbor and a generous contributor to the wider community. Owner Frank Kramer is an active Cambridge citizen and has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Harvard Square Business Association for over twenty years. Each year the store undertakes an initiative to donate part of its sales to charity on certain days between Thanksgiving and Christmas; and
WHEREAS: The Harvard Book Store is more than just an excellent bookstore and a good and generous member of the community; the Harvard Book Store is a true Cambridge institution: an invaluable piece of the fabric that makes Cambridge the unique city that we know and love; now therefore be it

WHEREAS: This City Council has learned that the National Law Enforcement Officer’s Memorial Fund has accepted the application to have the late Officer William Loughrey’s name inscribed on its memorial for fallen police officers; and
WHEREAS : There will be a ceremony held in Washington, D.C. on Monday May 13, 2002; at 8:00 p.m. there will be a candlelight vigil on the memorial grounds, during which Officer Loughrey’s name will be read out loud; and
WHEREAS: Officer Loughrey had served the Cambridge Police Department faithfully for 14 years before he was struck down at his post of duty by a burglar on the morning of June 26, 1860; and
WHEREAS: Officer Loughrey met up with a fellow officer who had described the circumstances previous to their meeting. There had been a break in at the shoe store on Brookline Street Officer Loughrey came upon one of the perpetrators bloodied from shots previously fired. Upon apprehension of the perpetrator, a struggle ensued. During the struggle the perpetrator opened his clasp knife and began to inflict several cuts upon the face, arms and body of Officer Loughrey. The burglar was then speedily bound with rope and taken into custody at a police office at City Hall; and
WHEREAS: Officer Loughrey was taken safely to his own home in a completely prostrated condition from a severe loss of blood; where he continued under the best medical treatment until he expired three hours after the altercation; and
WHEREAS: This memorial will perpetuate his name and commemorate his virtues as a Police Officer; now therefore be it RESOLVED: That the City Council go on record acknowledging this lasting tribute to Officer Loughrey who gave his life
in the line of duty; and be it further
RESOLVED: That the City Clerk be and hereby is requested to forward a suitably engrossed copy of this resolution to amember of Officer Loughrey’s family behalf of the entire City Council.

WHEREAS: The School Recycling Initiative Program (SCRIP) was created in February 2000 as a collaboration between Cambridge Public Schools and the Department of Public Works to offer financial incentives for recycling in each school; and
WHEREAS: The schools involved in SCRIP can earn seventeen dollars per ton recycled; and
WHEREAS: Between February 1, 2000 and January 31, 2002 the Cambridge Public Schools have recycled a total of 406.77 tons of recyclables, receiving a total of $7,084.71 in grant money from the Cambridge Recycling Program; and
WHEREAS: The recycling efforts of the Cambridge Public Schools have saved 277 trees, conserved 814 barrels of oil, 285 households’ average electricity use, almost 3 million gallons of water, and prevented 17.94 truck loads of trash from being disposed of in landfills; now therefore be it
RESOLVED: That the City Council go on record to congratulate the Cambridge Public Schools, Department of Public Works, and the Cambridge Recycling Program for their successful efforts through the SCRIP program to recycle and teach Cambridge youth the importance of recycling; and be it further
