This year’s World Sight Day was celebrated by Optometrists all across India in a way that created history and marked a new beginning for the profession. Optometry Council of India (OCI) celebrated World Sight Day through a public awareness campaign regards eye care. This activity was done in collaboration with Indian Optometry Federation (IOF) and Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry-India (ASCO), and supported by three industry sponsors: Alcon, Bausch & Lomb and Cooper vision India. OCI would like to thank the supporters and sponsors of this successful event.
The event was initially planned in three major cities: Chennai, Mumbai and New Delhi. However, due to the enthusiasm of optometrist all over the country other cities also requested to conduct such awareness walks and OCI supported the same by providing banners. The banner had the following slogan: “Better vision for a great life, optometrist care for your eyes”. Participants also wore T-shirts which had the information “Check Yearly, See clearly” and “Proud to be an optometrist” printed on its front and back respectively. This level of participation by optometrists all around the country expresses their contribution towards health care in India. 2016, World Sight Day, would go down in history as the beginning of a phenomenal contribution by optometrists towards health care. This is just the beginning and I am sure there is much more to come from many younger optometrists who are ready to serve society, given the opportunity.
Total Optometrist participated: 2000
Venues: Chennai, Mumbai, New Delhi, Ludhiana, Pune, Calicut, Shillong and Surat. The following report details the participation in these cities.
