SOUTHWELL CATHEDRALHEAD OF MARKETING AND EVENTS

Background Information

The Cathedral and Parish Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary has stood in the centre of Southwell for centuries. It is the cathedral church for Nottinghamshire, despite being some 10 miles from the town of Nottingham. It is arguably the most beautiful 12th century building in England and perfect in its setting. It is a beacon of faith for the people of Nottinghamshire, witnessing through the centuries to God’s love for his people.

1

The primary work of the Cathedral today is the same as it has been through the ages, the worship of God. This continues every day with services and the prayers of our regular congregations and our visitors. The Cathedral connects us with the wider Church on earth and in heaven, provides a focus for the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham and offers all who come here an opportunity for celebration, learning and discovery.

Cathedral Management

Since 1999, all cathedrals have been governing in accordance with the Cathedrals Measure passed that year. The Measure created three bodies to govern cathedrals – the Chapter, Council and College of Canons.

The Chapter forms the governing body of the Cathedral. It sets policy, approves strategy and the annual budget. The Chapter is chaired by the Dean, the two Residentiary Canons (Canon Chancellor and Canon Precentor) are part of the Chapter, together with other members appointed by the Bishop and two lay persons appointed by the congregation.

The Chapter is assisted in its management by a number of committees which report to the Chapter in an advisory capacity and make recommendations.

The Cathedral Council acts as a “critical friend” to the Cathedral Chapter and considers matters in connection with the general direction and mission of the Cathedral. It receives and considers the annual budget, annual report and audited accounts.

The College of Canons is an honorary body, receives and considers the annual report and audited accounts and takes an interest in the life of the Cathedral, particularly in the wider context of the Diocese.

The Cathedral Shop is a separate trading company and all its profits are gifted to the Cathedral. The Refectory is currently run as a franchise and pays rent to the Cathedral.

The Archbishops’ Palace and its grounds adjacent to the Cathedral was completely refurbished with a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and provides a venue for events and weddings as well as the Cathedral’s Song School.

The Post and Further Background Information

This is a new full-time post that has been created to form part of the senior management team at the Cathedral. Previous marketing activity has been undertaken by a variety of part-time posts in response to need at the time. This is an exciting opportunity for someone to grasp the many opportunities to achieve maximum exposure for the Cathedral to a varied and wide audience and, in time, to build their own team to achieve these goals. However, it should be emphasized that marketing a cathedral is a very different task to marketing in a more secular world and the post-holder will be expected to engage quickly with the philosophy of the Chapter and be sensitive to what being a cathedral really means. In this respect we are seeking someone with a strong empathy for the Church and especially for Southwell Cathedral.

Southwell Cathedral runs a number of events – open air theatre, concerts, weddings and the organisation and delivery of some of these will fall to the

Head of Marketing and Events. The Southwell Music Festival has become an important annual event in the Cathedral’s diary and takes place at the end of August. Organisation and management of this is undertaken by an independent management team.

The Cathedral was successful in its bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund to completely refurbish and improve the ancient Archbishops’ Palace. Two days of this post are funded until the end of March by the Heritage Lottery. There are currently plans to apply for a further grant from the HLF for the refurbishment, reinterpretation and conservation of the famous “Leaves of Southwell” in the Chapter House. This is a major project which will take place over the next five years and present challenges and opportunities for the Head of Marketing and Events.

The post-holder will be an important public face for the Cathedral and will play an ambassadorial role and on occasions may represent and promote the Cathedral within the wider community and media.

The post-holder will need to be aware of the complexities of the Cathedral’s diary and be willing and able to forge and maintain good relationships and communications across all departments within the Cathedral as well as fostering good links and promoting the Cathedral to visitors through the various tourism bodies with which the Cathedral has links. These include Visit Nottinghamshire, the local Town Council, Visit Southwell and Visit England.

The Head of Marketing and Events is operationally responsible for developing all aspects of the Cathedral’s digital marketing activity, including the website, social media network and marketing. We are

4

planning the development of a new website and the successful candidate will be responsible for project managing the delivery of this. We have one member of staff who will help (one day a week) the Head of Marketing and Events, mostly on social media. Currently there are no other members of staff dedicated to marketing.

The Cathedral employs a very small staff of c.30 people, many of whom are part-time. It is envisaged that the post-holder will view this opportunity as income generating and in time develop their own staff team.

The Cathedral works with the Diocesan Press Officer who provides links to the local press and media and the Head of Marketing and Events will work with her to forge good relations and links with the media.

The post-holder will be responsible for their own administration.

How to Apply for this Vacancy

Please apply using the Cathedral’s application form supplied. We cannot consider a CV as an application, although supporting materials can be accepted. Please include a covering letter outlining why you are interested in the post and your suitability for it.

Please endeavour to apply by email. Applications should be addressed to Caroline Jarvis [email protected] by 9.00 am on Monday. 25th September.
