A Winter’s Epiphany
Timeless thoughts of a winter’s stare;
Eyes gazing over a landscape bare.
Memories drift on a blustery breeze;
Dying light ushers in the freeze.
Reaching out for a grasp on the present;
Stillness sets in, alone, and desolate.
Future unknown, outcome uncertain;
Brilliance shadowed by a drawn curtain.
Path now set, laid before me known;
Closing light now emanating from home.
Enter my homestead, heart filled with glee;
Two eyes of the future peering upward at me.
Trusting in him to forge forward unrill fulfilled; Basis
of strength, values I have instilled.
A weary mind at last permitted to rest;
Reflecting on the realization of how I am blessed.

Residents Story
Every newsletter we dedicate a page to
a resident who is happy to tell a story
about any aspect of their life. This
story is told by Tam Morgan and his
wife Margaret.
Tam’s Story
Tam was youngest of 7 boys and 3 girls. Tam was very spoilt
by his older siblings. Tam was brought up in Tower Street in
Portobello in a tenement flat that looked onto the promenade
and beach. Tam remembers the Pier that was on the Prom
along from his home, and also had good memories of attending
the open air pool. Tam has very fond memories of playing on
the beach and also his time at St. John’s School which he left
at 15 years old. Tam also had fantastic memories of working
on the shows that were based on the promenade. Tam worked
on the Waltzers for extra pocket money. Tam would twirl the
Waltzer around and make all the girls scream.
Tam remembers going to the dance hall, he did not like the
pally and only went there once. Tam enjoyed going to the
Casino Dance Hall in Portobello, and also the Co-op Dance Hall
in the High Street, called the Inch View Dance Hall. Tam met
his wife Margaret at the Dancing.
After leaving School he worked in a butchers on the High
Street. The butcher was named Matthews then but it is now
named Finlay’s. Tam was then called up for National Service
and was based in Liverpool. Tam eventually took on an
apprenticeship as a Painter and Decorator and worked in this
trade all his working life and had his own business.
Tam was also in a band called “The Metone Melody Makers”.
There was 3 of them in the band. They only knew 3 tunes;
The Waltz, Fox Trot, and the Tango. They did weddings and
parties on request.
Tam is also a huge Hibernian Fan and enjoyed attending
matches. Tam shows with pride his Scottish Cup winners mug
that he enjoys his tea in.

Theatre Trips
Some of our residents enjoyed trips out to shows in the
Brunton Theatre and The Potterow Theatre. The show in the
Brunton was MAMA. The show cast were of all ages and the
songs and quality of the singing was amazing. Alice Burns,
Margaret Scott, Helen Thomson, and Marion Melrose said they
enjoyed it and it was very uplifting. The show at The
Potterow Theatre was called Curious Shows. There was
singing and dancing and interactions with reminiscing boxes.
Residents got up to dance at the end of the show.
Entertainers/Visitors
Betty Pottinger came along and gave all a lovely afternoon of
singing and guitar. The residents found her smooth voice very
relaxing. We also had visits from Mark Smith, Jim Mackie, and
Maria from Music for Hospitals. We continue to welcome
Dorothy every Thursday morning for chair exercises and we
also had a visit from Diana who works at the Museum who held
a reminiscence session.
