SHIP HOUSE / ZEYNEP YAGCIOGLU
Heidegger says that 'experience' may be a criterion for artistic appreciation and
understanding. This experience likes: When we think of a place, we are closer to the
person who is there at that moment, says Heidegger. According to this, we can
define experience as follows, we must have felt a place for experience with our
senses, and experience is the feeling that these senses make in us. So if we say that
you are made up of feelings of experience, the experience is the 6th feeling that can
cover your five senses. It is a sensation because we also create a pleasure or
dissatisfaction. We have a taste of food, a surface we touch, an object we can smell,
a color or shape we see, a voice we hear and it is not just that which is experienced.
This sense, that is, the difference of experience from other senses is spiritual
formation. That is, it can be felt independently of the material and subconscious. In
fact, we can experience every space or environment we have in this sense. The
place where we have the most chance to experience is the our own house or the
road to our home. Maybe it could be the only place we walked once. The Ship House
is located in Hoşdere Caddesi as a place where there will be an experience for
everyone.
Danyal Çiper (1932-2008) entered the ITU Faculty of Architecture in 1951, and he
was interested in 'Realistic Architecture' , open construction and its functions, starting
from university years. In those years, he was influenced by Frank Llyod Wright and
his school 'Organic Architecture', which reflected in his practices in the following
years. Danyal Çiper is an architect who does not have any fashion issues on his way.
He has always emphasized that there should be no fashion in an art branch. Society
has created a community and architecture should to preserve and secure spatial
developments. The architect has considerably undertaken a heavy citizenship
responsibility, such as protecting the interests of the community and the individual,
securing and building a favorable living environment. According to Danyal Çiper, the
architect must be trained as one who is aware of his architectural responsibilities.
Moreover, Danyal Çiper emphasized that human structure is not just about physics.
Man has a very variable and formable structure. Only Neufert measures are not
enough. These measures are necessary but not enough to enable people to move
freely. In addition to general psychology, this time private buildings will be a private
psychological factor. Specific psychological habits, beliefs and loyalties should be
explored by architect.
Architect Danyal says that he admires to Wright and is influenced by organic
architecture. This is reflected in his designs, such as Ship House. Of course this
attitude does not just originate from the form. This structure, which takes its form from
its function, establishes a good relationship with the same place at the same time.
The landscape elements and the entrance to the building are proof of this.
During the Ship House project, Danyal Çiper determined how they needed the
spaces by meeting the owners of the land and their families. For example, the
mother , because her life passes through the kitchen, she wants to be the kitchen
very beautiful. She wanted to see the sewing and ironing work in the kitchen, too.
The fact that every interior has a separate plan in accordance with the requests is far
from the idea of primitive apartment in Turkey. This building proves that if we
consider the needs of people in different places instead of this type, psychology and
lifestyles of people are reflected in the plans and different plan solutions do not cost
more than common type apartments.
The building is not a villa but an apartment building consisting of six apartments.
There are four apartments on the ground and two on the first floor, and two duplex
apartments that also use the terrace floor from the second one. The apartments on
the ground floor are intended to be rented and the upper floors are specially planned
for three brothers and their parents from the Özkan family. The building, which is a
five-storey building with a basement and a pull-out terraced floor, is different from the
typical apartment house layout where the floors repeat each other as a single house,
and each floor has its own unique composition.
Danyal Çiper also made furniture designs. The style of living that day requires fewer
fixed furniture. It is obvious that the incongruity of the big furniture that are in the
middle of the smaller living spaces which are being offered. Because of this, the table
has always been fixed. The absence of the four legs of the table also prevents the
striking of your feet while eating. By using the variable lighting, some of the elements
which are fixed in the interior, the volume will always have different effects. Because
of this, natural and artificial light is used a lot. This building has been presented with
many alternative lighting for users. Both direct and indirect lighting is available.
While the exterior of building represents characteristics the late period of FLW, we
see interior of the building early characteristics of FLW. Horizontal accented
travertine, walnut coatings, fixed wood, light fixtures and original furniture designs are
examples of 'Gesamtkuntswerk' . Fluid space, organic integrity, the nature of the
material are no longer considered, but for the house architect considered them. In
order to illuminate the dining area with the daylight from the terraces, the architect
placed three hill-shaped beams in the shape of a half moon. Also, due to Le
Corbuiser's Ribbon Window, daylight comes with uninterrupted and satisfy the needs
of the house about sunlight. Despite the fact that there is no double room and the
height of the ceiling is very low, staircase is compensating this situation generously.
Although the open-plan and free-flowing understanding of the corridor is destroyed
by raised walls and unnecessary gates, alternative circulations are noticed, at least
through the kitchen entrance and double connection with the hall. The relationship
between the stepped marble skirtings and the built-in skirting, and the fact that the
inner stairway forms an arm depot while the other arm console is enriched, is a
noteworthy element at home.
The different perception of this structure from the others is in the form and material or
in a modern style, as well as the spiritual needs of the city.
