Topic: Socratic Seminar – The Human Condition

Place proper materials on your desk 1. Your English binder2. Fill in MLA heading 2. Two sharpened writing utensils3. Sit at SLANT 3. This Packet4. “What animal walks on all fours in the morning, two in the afternoon and three in the evening?” –The Sphinx, Oedipus Rex

Best Answer: ________________________________________________________________________(if you know you are right, please keep the answer to yourself until prompted)

I Do Directions: Today we will be investigating what it means to be human, what philosophers, theologians, anthropologists, and other scholars call “The Human Condition” though a Socratic Seminar. We have a few procedures to review first:

Suggested Sentence Starters:-I agree but would add… (I’d like to piggyback on that, by adding…)-I respectfully disagree because (slap)…-I want to know….(clarifying questions)-I think the (clip, passage, text, author) is trying to say….(interpreting the text)-Bonus: connecting The Iliad to discussion meaningfully

Remember you do not need to raise your hand but should only speak one at a time. You will be graded on the takeaways you write in your exit ticket at the end of class and in order to get full points for that you must have actively participated at least twice in the seminar.

“That’s the thing about humans, when things are at their worst, we’re at our best”“We’re imperfect creatures living in a beautifully imperfect world”“It’s amazing humans have made it this far”“When one of us messes up, someone else comes along to help out”

Are these statements made in the commercial about humans true for everyone, everywhere? What are the common characteristics of humans (beyond physical ones) that you’d say apply to us all?

What message about humanity do the following images contain?Sentence Starters:Humans want… Humans are.... Humans need… Humans tend to… Humans cannot help but…

The following images are photojournalism from human rights incidents in history:

What are human rights?Under what conditions do one’s human rights get violated? Examples? How do other humans react?
