St. John’s Messenger Volume 93, Issue 23 November 13, 2013 Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. Psalm 100:1 The subject of my last message was being an attractive church through love for one another, revealed in our actions and attitude: in welcoming and including the stranger, seeing the good in one another and speaking positively of and to each other. When people sense that we love and care for one another and those who cross our path, they often want to become part of us. This is part two. Another very important piece of an “attractive” church is worship . Many times we talk about a “contemporary” service as a way to be inviting. What makes such a service appealing? First, the musicians have to be top-notch. Often they are paid, unless the congregation has some gifted young musicians. From my own observation, if this not the case, it becomes a poor imitation. Second, it must be accessible, which means it is easy to follow. Having the entire service printed in our bulletins is a huge step in this direction and a significant move on our part. The use of technology to enhance the service is a piece of accessibliity. Our sanctuary is beautiful and is a very worshipful space, appropriately adorned for the seasons of the church year. I cannot imagine how using projection screens would add. And yet, parents with children have told me that seeing the service on a screen rather than juggling bulletins, hymnals, and restless children is very helpful. Somehow, most of us made it through those years, but we must think about the implications of our changing world. Remember what we sang last Sunday: Come, we that love the Lord, and let our joys be known …Let those refuse to sing that never knew our God; but children of the heavenly king may tell their joys abroad. Then let our songs abound… . Worship with enthusiasm is another very important ingredient! If we are excited about worship, about praising the God who loves us, who is with us, who forgives, strengthens and helps us, let it show! Yes, this means singing out. More about that in a moment. It also means spirited spoken responses: not a quiet “and also with you” but a fervent “and also with you.” Not a subdued “Thanks be to God” but a joyful shout of thanksgiving:

Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. Psalm 100:1

The subject of my last message was being an attractive church through love for one another, revealed in our actions and attitude: in welcoming and including the stranger, seeing the good in one another and speaking positively of and to each other. When people sense that we love and care for one another and those who

cross our path, they often want to become part of us. This is part two.Another very important piece of an “attractive” church is worship. Somehow, most of us made it through those years, but we must think about the implications of our changing world.Remember what we sang last Sunday: Come, we that love the Lord, and let our joys be known …Let those refuse to sing that never knew our God; but children of the heavenly king may tell their joys abroad. Then let our songs abound… .Worship with enthusiasm is another very important ingredient! If we are excited about worship, about praising the God who loves us, who is with us, who forgives, strengthens and helps us, let it show!Yes, this means singing out. More about that in a moment. It also means spirited spoken responses: not a quiet “and also with you” but a fervent “and also with you.” Not a subdued “Thanks be to God” but a joyful shout of thanksgiving: “Thanks be to God!” Remember what God has done for us.As for singing, I know that unfamiliar hymns are difficult to sing but they also have wonderful new ways of speaking. You might take time to read the words of the hymns before worship; they are chosen intentionally for the day, and having a sense of the words will help. But sometimes even familiar hymns are sung without any feeling. Don’t be afraid to sing out; so what if your voice isn’t trained. The Psalmist says, “Make a joyful noise to the Lord.” So: Let our joys be known! let our songs abound! Let us make that joyful noise in praise and thanksgiving. We will even feel good about it.Thanks be to God!

Thanksgiving Day Dinner

The Aid Society of St. John’s Lutheran Church will give one of its famous dinners on Thanksgiving Day in the Band Hall. The cost is small – only 25 cents. These dinners have been liberally patronized in the past and no doubt the coming dinner will be equally as well patronized by the community.Article from November 27, 1903

Thanksgiving was quietly spent by the people of Northumberland. On account of the scarcity of turkeys, many people did away with their usual turkey dinners and attended dinner served by the Ladies Aid Society of Lutheran of the Lutheran Church.

SU CASA WISH LIST

You Are Cordially InvitedThe first Sunday of Advent, December 1, 2013 will be the traditional decorating of the sanctuary for Christmas. Again, this year the Hanging of the Greens will be incorporated into the worship at the 8:00 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. services. Through special readings and presentations we will begin our Advent journey. Naturally, the highlight of the decorating is the placement of the Chrismons on the tree. It is truly an honor to place a Chrismon on the tree. It is a visible means of making an offering of our talents to God. Obviously the entire decorating can not take place during worship, so join us after the 10:15 service; we'll have pizza in the fellowship hall at 1:00, and then finish up with the decorating.  All help will be greatly appreciated.  Come one come all, stay and help make the sanctuary beautiful for the birth of our Lord Jesus.

Social Ministry will have the Birthright Tree, located in the rear of the sanctuary, decorated on Sunday, December 1st. Items need to be returned to the church by Sunday, December 22nd along with the gift tag.

As always, on Christmas Eve during the Family Worship Service children may bring gifts for Birthright wrapped in white tissue to the altar.

WHAT’S HAPPENING

MEMBERS : Sally Mayer; Jack Snyder; Helen Snyder; Frances Hoffman; Carol Diehl; Joe Epler; Mike Payne; Shirley Wolfe;

A HYMN OF PRAISEThe familiar hymn often called “The Doxology” or “The Common Doxology” was written by Thomas Ken in 1674 as the concluding verse of a morning hymn, “Awake, My Soul, and With the Sun,” and an evening hymn, “Glory to Thee, My God, This Night.” The lyrics are appropriate for any time of giving or thanksgiving. Consider using this hymn as your Thanksgiving dinner prayer.

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise him, all creatures here below; Praise him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost.

Some church bodies have altered the words to “The Doxology” slightly, but the overall sentiment — praising the Triune God — remains the same. How profound to know that when we sing it, we join Christians around the world and across nearly 440 years!
