Job Title: Health & Safety Officer
Reporting to: Health and Safety Manager
Location: London, with visits to Rehoming Centres and Shops throughout the UK and Dublin
Revised: March 2017
Summary
To maintain excellent auditing, information, advisory, reporting and evaluation systems which support the development and maintenance of high standards in Health & Safety policy and practice throughout Dogs Trust.
Duties
To maintain an understanding of the Rehoming Centre, Retail, Dog School and Head Office operations as well as the Health and Safety issues facing each
To be familiar with all H&S related policies and procedures, including the Standard Operating Procedures and relevant handbooks
To revise written policies and procedures as agreed with the Health and Safety Manager
To communicate Health and Safety policies and procedures effectively and quickly to

staff across Dogs Trust. This includes maintaining the H&S pages of the Dogs Trust intranet, agreeing new content with the H&S Manager before it is uploaded
To take day to day responsibility for the H&S reporting system (currently Info Exchange). This includes responding promptly to all new reports uploaded, advising the H&S Manager, prioritizing more detailed responses and drawing up plans to investigate as necessary.
To conduct site visits according to a programme set by the H&S Manager, carrying out risk assessments and audits as necessary and advising on risks and other issues. To write up all audit visits promptly and accurately in the agreed format, with clear identification of risk and recommendations for improvement where needed. To agree with the relevant manager who is responsible for each action, copy the report to them and oversee to ensure timely implementation.
To respond to questions on general and specific risk assessments on and off site and safe systems of work (permit to work system).
To provide H&S advice as required, including to the Retail, Rehoming Centre and Dog School teams and follow up as necessary to ensure compliance and to help overcome any practical difficulties. To keep the H&S Manager apprised of developments.
To evaluate health and safety performance as agreed with the H&S Manager and to report as required, highlighting best practice as well as problems and recommending solutions
To report on H&S as required
To establish and maintain good working relationships with colleagues and external contractors
Any other reasonable duties as required

Person Specification
Formal health and safety qualifications
Experience in a similar role in a multi-site environment
Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) together with skills of tact, diplomacy and influencing
Ability to induct staff of all levels in health and safety protocols
Well organized and systematic
IT skills: experience of spreadsheets, Word, web-based and intranet systems
Experience of site auditing and carrying out risk assessments
A flexible approach to work schedules and the willingness to travel are essential
Full, clean, manual driving licence essential
