The opening image is a wide shot taken of the main location throughout the video. They’ve used pathetic fallacy with the dark night image to indicate to the audience that the video is going to be dark and bleak. This opening shot only last for 4 seconds with the opening beat of the song before panning around the location and zooming into the subject. (Lorde)

After the previous short take the camera begins to zoom into Lorde but does not show her facial expressions as she never uses direct address. This gives the audience a sense of looking in on the situation rather than it being directed at them. The following shot is the actor walking towards the camera singing the lyrics to the song this is filmed at eye level.

Next the camera rotates to a shot of a man with who we assume is his girlfriend and a group of others. The lyrics are ‘Is that you girlfriend, bet the world she don’t know’ this indicates that she is having an affair with this man. There is then a shot reverse shot of the man making eye contact with Lorde.

The previous point is confirmed in the next shot when the camera pans to a series of quick shots of the man and Lorde in a room together making out. Lorde is still singing throughout this song ‘past the point of no return’ this further indicates that they’ve gone past the point of going back.

The next shot last for about 20 seconds and shows the girlfriend doing usual things (making a cup of tea) kissing, and having a conversation with who we assume to be her boyfriend. The shot is taken at eye level making the audience feel like they are observing a scene. There are a series of short take s slotted in-between this of the boyfriend being intimate with Lorde.
