Reading Strategies and Language Usage in The Odyssey— Initial InquiryOver the next few weeks, we’ll be looking at language usage in the Odyssey and learning strategies for reading through this complex text. But before we start, answer the questions below to get you thinking about some of the skills and themes we’ll be discussing:Skill—Reading Strategies
When you’re reading something confusing, what are some strategies you use to try and make sense of it?
Skill—Language Usage Agree or Disagree: In every word, there’s a world.
Theme—Loyalty Which group do you feel the most loyalty towards: parents/family, friends, or
another group you belong to (a sports team, church, club, etc....)?
Theme—Hospitality Which do you prefer: having a guest or being a guest? Why?
Theme—Heroism Agree or Disagree: “I hate that man like the Gates of Death who says one
thing but hides another in his heart,” Achilles, ancient Greek hero.
Theme—War/Domesticity Have you known anyone who has come back from a war?
Agree or Disagree: Home should be the safest place.
