Focus Discrepancy Test Name

RepeatableWhat is the test method? This

needs to be detailed so anyone could conduct the test.

MeasurableHow will you measure the test? What are the units and how will your measurement be accurate?

SpecificHow can you justify your test is specific to the

focus discrepancy? Is there any normative data to compare and rank performance?

Test DiagramIf Appropriate

Technical

Tackling one on one.

Video analysis Having retrieved video footage of the participant to watch

back and to create notes and create a tally chart of how

many times focus discrepancy of tackles one on one is either

successful or unsuccessful. Then creating a percentage of

the success of discrepancy.

The test will be measured by creating a percentage from the tally chart of results on

how successful the participant was at the focus discrepancy.

The test is specific because it is in a game situation. There is no normative data but

to be successful in 7’s a wing must be able to have a high percentage success

rate of tackles.

Tactical

Remaining deep in arrow structure

when attacking

video analysis The same way as technical, having retrieved footage of my participant playing in a game, to create a tally chart when

seeing the focus discrepancy of how many times I see the

athlete in the correct position in the arrow structure –

remaining deep.

The test will be measured by tallying how many times there

is an attacking opportunity and whether the athlete who

is being analysed is in the arrow structure remaining

deep and then calculating a percentage on how many times the athlete is in the

correct position.

The test is specific because the video is a game situation where the athlete is

doing what they believe to be the right positioning and play.

Psychological

Confidence in decision making

Confidence Questionnaire

The questionnaire given will be filled out by participant

who then helps create a score. This score is show by adding up all the numbers from the questionnaire and finding a total. The normative data to go with the results are found

on the questionnaire and compare the athlete’s results

to the normative data.

The test is measured by the scores given and these scores must be added up to create a

total. The higher the total means that the athlete has a high confidence level in their

sports performance.

This test is specific due the questions being sport specific and relating to game situations specific to the performer and

how the performer feels.

Biomechanics

Linear Acceleration

Speed = distance/time,

this can be show in the 30m

acceleration test

The test is able to be repeated. The athlete must undergo a warm to prepare themselves including being aerobic exercise which will increase the athlete’s heart

rate. There is 30meters measured out in a straight line with a cone at the start and a

cone at 30 meters. The observer will take the time from the athletes first foot

strike to the time is takes for their torso to cross the

finishing line after 30meters. This is then repeated 3 times.

The results are measured by the time it takes to cover the distance. This can then be put into a processor on sites such as brianmac.co.uk which is a reliable source which will use

the data over 30meters to show whether the timing is

good.

this is specific to a game of rugby 7’s who plays on the wing because when in

a game they will cover distances of around 30meters in each sprint or attack

which they do.

30 meters

Physical

Aerobic Endurance

5 minute run This test is easily done; it involves measuring out a

distance which an athlete is able to run in a square. I measured out a 5mx5m

square, and must be able to measure the amount of

meters covered. The athlete must continuously run for 5

minutes around the area which will have been marked out in meters. At the end of

the 5 minutes it will be calculated how many times

the athlete has run around the square and calculates the

meters which are covered.

These results are then measured by the amount of

meters which were covered in the 5 minutes of running.

These results can be compared to normative data which the RFU have released to test whether the results of

the athlete are at a high standard or need improving.

This is specific to rugby 7’s because a game of 7’s will only last for a couple

minutes and there will be partial breaks throughout the game due to line out,

tries scored and conversions. So in relation to rugby the endurance an

athlete would need is around 5 minutes.

Physiological

Recovery of heart rate

A bespoke test of how long beats per minute take to get to resting bpm/heart rate.

The test is easily done by taking the athletes resting

heart rate before exercise, and then taking part in a high

intensity exercise which raises the heart rate, and then once

exercise has stopped immediately takes the heart

rate of the athlete and record this result and every minute

afterwards until the heart rate is returns to resting heart rate.

Heart rate is measured by Beats per minute; this can be

measured by the athlete taking their pulse at their

wrists or below the ear and counting how many beats there is within the minute.

this is specific to rugby because the athlete must be able to recover in game

situations but also throughout the tournament it is important for the

athletes heart rate to be able to recover so that they can be prepared for the next

game in short interval times
