From the Pastor October 18, 201529th Sunday in

Ordinary Time - B

We conclude our reflections on Pope Francis’ theme of God’s gift of Matrimony as we ponder the last of the Roman Missal’s 3 Nuptial Blessings. They speak for themselves and are long,

so I’ll just offer brief ‘footnote’ comments on each. While this one does have a parenthetical section omitted outside Mass when Holy Communion is not offered, it does not have a section omitted for those beyond childbearing age. Pray these beautiful biblical synopses of Marriage for married and engaged couples, those in troubled or broken marriages - and, if applicable, for you and your spouse!

Nuptial Blessing - IIILet us humbly invoke by our prayers,

dear brothers and sisters, God’s blessing upon this bride and groom, that in his kindness

he may favor with his help those on whom he has bestowed the Sacrament of Matrimony.Holy Father, maker of the whole world,

who created man and woman in your own image and willed that their union be crowned with your

blessing, we humbly beseech you

for these your servants, who are joined today in the Sacrament of Matrimony.

[1]May your abundant blessing, Lord,

come down upon this bride, N.,and upon N., her companion for life,

and may the power of your Holy Spiritset their hearts aflame from on high, so

that, living out together the gift of Matrimony, [2]

they may (adorn their family with children

and) enrich the Church. In happiness may they praise you, O

Lord,in sorrow may they seek you out;

may they have the joy of your presenceto assist them in their toil, and know that you are near

to comfort them in their need; [3]

let them pray to you in the holy assembly

and bear witness to you in the world, and after a happy old age, together

with the circle of friends that surrounds

them, may they come to the Kingdom of

Heaven. [4]Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

[1] GOD CROWNS COUPLES WITH HIS BLESSING. In Eastern Rite [Byzantine, Coptic, etc.] Weddings, the Priest blesses two crowns which he places on the newlyweds’ heads to signify they have been ‘crowned’ with blessings from on high - and that a “crown of righteousness” [2 Timothy 4:8] awaits those faithful to their vows in heaven. We so often forget that GOD is the source of ALL blessings and that God alone can strengthen and support us, renew and refresh us. Yet so many couples try to ‘go it alone;’ no wonder so many marriages fail. When was the last time you prayed for a married couple … or prayed for - and with - your spouse? [2] LOVING COMPANIONS FOR LIFE. The Bible says God made woman to be man’s helpmate [C.f. Genesis 2:8-9] but God also called them into a partnership, diverse in body and gifts, but complementary and equal in dignity. However they are both subject to - and in need of - what God alone can provide. God also empowers them to be and to do all He calls them to be and to do with the grace or gift of the Holy Spirit. This means they are consecrated by the same Spirit who enables bread and wine to become Christ’s Body and Blood. Thus, a husband and wife are sacramental signs of God’s presence! [3] A MARRIAGE IS BLESSED BY TURNING TO & RELYING ON GOD. As with all sacramental graces and gifts, these things do not work by magic. Couples must accept God into every aspect of their life - and consider God’s will and ways, His commandments and precepts before doing anything - and avail themselves to the gifts that uniquely come from the Sacraments, especially Eucharist and Reconciliation. So do not turn to drugs or alcohol, the internet or illicit trysts; for blessed are those couples who go to Confession regularly -

and to weekly Mass together - for they will receive great blessings. [4] ”WILL THE CIRCLE BE UNBROKEN?” These words, taken from the refrain of a country/folk song, remind us that the bonds we forged or created on earth do not unravel in heaven; they, like love, endure forever. By accepting and reflecting, receiving and sharing God’s love while on earth, couples not only give others the encouragement to get and stay married; they gain eternal blessings in heaven!

In His holy Name,

This Weekend’s ReadingsTwenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading: Isaiah 53:10-11 Isaiah speaks of how the Servant of God will have to give his life up for the sins of other people. Because of this suffering the Servant will receive eternal life for himself and all the people whose sins are forgiven because of him.Second Reading: Hebrews 4:14-16Jesus is considered to be the new high priest and mediator between God and his people. Fortunately, Jesus has experienced the same temptations as other people, and so he has more tolerance of our weaknesses.Gospel: Mark 10:35-45Two of the disciples ask Jesus that they be allowed to sit at his right and left side when he comes into his glory. Jesus explains that they should not be concerned with their position. Instead they should concern themselves with serving others just as Jesus was planning to serve many in giving his own life for their sins.

Religious Formation News

October ~ Month of the Rosary

Love Is Our MissionAs part of our goal to support the Church's catechetical mission! The wonderful reality about the Church is that in her, we are members of the “Family of families.” Our earthly families are embraced by a truly extended family that is eternal. Through our membership in the Church and the Communion of Saints, our lives and their significance do not fade away like unrecognizable faces in a yearbook, but are destined to shine forever in the heavenly kingdom with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Church is our Mother, a source of life. There is perhaps no other bond that matches that of a mother and child as to the depth of love and devotion. Through her role as the parent, she opens her arms to embrace us in good times and bad. She never abandons us, no matter how far we may go astray. She is the vehicle of our sanctification in Baptism. It is through the Sacraments that she nurtures our faith and keeps it vibrant and alive in Christ.May God continually bless you and your families. Beloved: Program for Married Couples

Tuesday evenings, 7:30-9:00 PMOct. 20, Nov. 3, 17

In this program married couples join together for fellowship and to explore the mystery of the Sacrament of Marriage. You will find your unique and vital niche within God’s plan and will gather insights into enriching your marriage and drawing each other deeper into God’s love. OUR NEXT MEETING IS THIS TUESDAY - ALL MARRIED COUPLES ARE INVITED TO ATTEND!

The Prophets Bible StudyWednesdays:

9:30-11:15 am or 7:30-9:15 pm

Last week we studied the prophet Jonah, “the reluctant prophet.” Many of us are very familiar with the story of Jonah being in the belly of the whale, but we may not know why he was there. What we learned in our study is that God came to Jonah with a mission that he did not want - to bring the “good news” of salvation to his enemy! Rather than listening to God, Jonah tried to run away - but found there is no hiding from God! Jonah finds himself in rough waters when he runs from God, but God sends a whale to rescue Jonah - and to bring him right back to his mission! How often do we try to run from God but find it impossible - and how blessed we are that God never leaves us and is always there when we cry out to him!

Our presenters, Sister Mary Cleary and Sister Mariann Mahon, led us to a greater appreciation of mercy using contemplative prayer, an imaginative presentation on the scripture of the Woman at the Well, a bit of liturgical dance, some conversation with those attending and a healthy dose of humor. It was a wonderful and memorable day.
