What’s Inside?

At first you’re not sure what to think – that’s natural. Then, after a while, you realize you’ve made the right decision. When your professor stops you in the hall to chat and actually calls you by name, you know it’s going to be a great four years. Cape Breton University has a reputation for connecting with its students. This connection is evident from the classroom to the cafeteria and from the library to the labs. As a result, our graduate satisfaction is among the highest in the country. CBU provides its students with an exceptional educational experience. This experience leads to excellence both in and out of the classroom, where faculty, students and graduates have

been recognized internationally for innovative accomplishments in a variety of fields. The University’s location also adds to its close-knit culture. Located on Canada’s stunning east coast, CBU makes its home in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality – the largest urban center on Cape Breton Island. With a population of more than 100,000 residents, the Municipality has the amenities of a city, with the welcoming and supportive atmosphere of a small town. From one end to the other, Cape Breton Island offers spectacular scenery and celebrated culture, the perfect backdrop for post-secondary studies. Here, students quickly become valued members of the local community.

Welcome to CBU

These are known as the Deans’ and Rossetti Scholarships. A limited number of the prestigious Chancellor’s, President’s and Marquis Scholarships are available for students with a superior academic average.

CBU has fostered my passion for international development and an appreciation for cultural diversity. Following graduation, I traveled to Kenya to carry out volunteer work through Save the Children Canada, an organization I got involved in as a student at CBU. I don’t think you can fully appreciate or understand another culture, another place, its complexities, its challenges and its draw, without experiencing it firsthand. Because of the support I received at CBU, I had the opportunity to do just that.

More than 65 students hired to conduct research with CBU’s leading experts.

I love being a professor at CBU! Being a part of an intimate campus and a small city provides so many opportunities to get to know not just students but the local community too. It is so rewarding to conduct research relevant to the immediate area, to involve students in that research and to teach courses drawing on my research specialties. Research informs my teaching, and teaching inspires my research!

Innovative learning takes place in classes at CBU, where hands-on opportunities for research give students added insights into class work, help financially support academic pursuits and prepare them for future employment. Compare this to traditional education where introductory academic concepts are purely discussed as theory, and fieldwork, experiments and individual learning opportunities are reserved for senior and graduate students. In our opinion, there’s no comparison!

Throughout the academic year, more than 65 students work directly with researchers at CBU. This close working relationship not only provides students with an opportunity to earn extra money, but to take ownership of their research

21

findings and discoveries. Undergraduate Student Research Awards, NSERC, SSHRC and Summer Student Grants all facilitate student employment and prepare students to apply for graduate programs or to enter the workforce.

Each year, the efforts of our student researchers are featured at our Student Undergraduate Research Forum and the Summer Student Lecture Series. These events provide students with an opportunity to present their research projects to faculty, students and the wider community, providing real-world experience in a non-threatening and fun environment.

Our Assets...CBU is proud to have several modern research spaces provided by funding from national organizations and competitive application processes. The majority of these spaces employ students as researchers and provide support for teaching to make classes more dynamic. A few of our unique research spaces include:

• The Beaton Institute, an archival treasure-trove.• Bras d’Or Institute, a marine research unit.• Centre for Cape Breton Studies, a digitization lab and performance studio.• Avian Thermal Ecology Lab, a space devoted to researching bird habitats.• The Children’s Rights Centre, devoted to influencing international policy.• The Boardmore Theatre, where stagecraft lends itself to research insights.• Labs with new, state-of-the-art scientific equipment.• Centre for Sustainability in Energy and the Environment, a catalyst for world-class research and development.

Above all, our dedicated researchers and educators are here to support the growth of students by providing them with exciting and practical research opportunities.
