Breaking All Barriers to GraduateEducation is a powerful means of change. Professional office technology graduate Helen Soto stands as an example of how life-changing education can be when combined with determination and a positive attitude.

In 2003, Helen and her husband were involved in a tragic automobile accident that left her a newlywed widow. The consequences of that tragedy had debilitating and far-reaching effects on her.

Despite this adversity, Helen knew that in order to stay positive for the sake of her children she needed to make a change. While in the process of looking for work, a counselor at the Workforce Solutions Golden Crescent office prompted her to consider returning to college.

With only that suggestion and her own determination, she enrolled at Victoria College. From there, each step she took forward increased her momentum.

Not only did she enjoy her classes, she also found all the support she needed as a first-generation college student through cooperative classmates, caring instructors and the KEY Center. As a member of the KEY Center, not only did she receive financial aid assistance that made returning to college possible, she also had access to counseling, career exploration tools and amentor, along with academic advising, tutoring and other support services.

She also found that the more involved she became in student organizations and activities, the more confidence and self-esteem she created for herself. She joined the Latin American Student Organization, Student Government Association and earned herself an invitation to join VC’s honor society, Phi Theta Kappa. She also worked as a student employee in the VC Bookstore, maintaining a caring, positive attitude that left a memorable impression on all those around her.

Seeing her today, it’s difficult to imagine that Helen has had to overcome such tremendous tragedy and adversity.

Transfer ProgramsStudents who complete their first two years of coursework at VC and then transfer to a university earn the same bachelor’s degree as students who spend all four years at a university. VC transfer students also save money by staying close to home. When you consider VC’s low tuition and fees, our students save thousands compared to those who attend a university all four years.

Workforce TrainingVC works closely with area businesses and industry to ensure that our training programs meet their specific employment needs. Our training programs will prepare you for a workforce career that will ensure your job skills are highly marketable to many of the area’s largest employers.

Continuing EducationFor professionals who are already in the workforce and need to meet ongoing continuing education requirements or want to improve their job skills, VC offers a wide arrayof courses from the Workforce & Continuing Education Department. High School ProgramsVC offers early admission, dual credit, and other outreach programs designed to help area high school students begin earning college credit while still in high school.

GED Preparation & Adult EducationThe Adult Education Center helps students improve basic skills in reading, writing, and math in order to prepare for the GED exam or college. VC also offers services fornon-native speakers to learn to communicate in the English language more effectively.

Paying for CollegeBefore deciding to enter college, many students wonder how they will pay for their education. Good news! Tuition at Victoria College is very affordable, and students have access to a number of financial aid options to help pay for school.

Apply for Financial Aid in 3 Easy Steps1. First, make sure you have applied for admission to Victoria College through ApplyTexas at www.applytexas.org.

2. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The FAFSA information is used to determine financial aid eligibility for grants, loans, and many scholarships.

3. Once admitted into VC, use the Pirate Portal to monitor your financial aid status, accept awards and complete the scholarship survey.

GrantsGrants may be obtained through the government, such as the Federal Pell Grant, or from state educational agencies. Grants help pay for college and do not need tobe repaid after graduation.

ScholarshipsIn addition to scholarships available from local businesses, civic organizations, and through the Victoria College Foundation, students have access to literally thousands of scholarship opportunities via the Internet.

LoansStudent loans can be used to help pay for college without requiring cash up front. All loans are required to be repaid, but student loan interest rates are low, and flexiblerepayment plans are available.

Student Success ClassIncoming VC freshmen get a helping hand during their first semester. The College Success: On Course classprovides an introduction to learning skills and strategies, as well as motivational techniques specifically targeted to college-level academics.

Tutoring ServicesThere are over 30 tutors in five tutoring centers located on the main campus, with hours to fit students’ needs. Tutoring services are also available at the Gonzales Center and the Calhoun County Center. Students can get help with a variety of subjects such as math, English, science classes, and much more.

Supplemental InstructionSupplemental instruction (SI) is a voluntary program where students benefit from the guidance of an SIleader who provides support in historically challenging courses. The safety and support of a group settingcomprised of fellow students creates an environment in which students may become more comfortable withcollege-level materials and study requirements.

The KEY CenterVC’s first-generation and low-income students, along with students with documented disabilities, may applyfor access to the KEY Center. Funded by the U.S. Department of Education, this TRIO Student Support Services program offers extensive assistance and support for members by providing tutoring, advising and career exploration, financial literacy education, culturalevents, and workshops to foster success.

Career Planner


Associate of Applied Science (AAS)An associate of applied science (AAS) degree provides students with a degree with major coursework in technical/occupational topics and is intended for students who plan to enter the workforce after completion of program requirements. AAS degrees may also transfer, leading to a Bachelor’s Degree from a university.

Certificates (C)For those who need specialized training, VC’s certificate programs are designed to provide a quick way to increase skills for career advancement or learn new skills necessary for a whole new career. Most certificate programs may be completed in as little as six months to one year.

Enhanced Skills Certificates (ESC)Enhanced skills certificates typically consist of 15 or more credit hours in addition to the requirements of a specific certificate or associate degree program. The coursework focuses intensively on a topic or skill related to the specific program, such as a nuclear enhanced skills certificate completed along with an associate degree in process technology.

Transfer Programs (T)Many students begin their college education by taking core courses at VC and then completing specialized, degree-specific courses at a university. Academic advisors at VC can customize transfer programs that prepare students to complete an Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, or Associate of Arts in Teaching degree then enter into a bachelor degree program. Students may also take advantage of VC’s articulation agreements with a number of prestigious Texas universities. An articulation agreement is a pre-determined agreement between VC and the university that sets forth how courses taken at VC apply toward the graduation requirements of that four-year university.

Workforce Training & Continuing Education (WCE)VC works closely with area businesses and industry to ensure that our training programs meet their specific employment needs. VC’s training programs prepare students for a workforce career that ensures job skills are marketable to many of the area’s largest employers.

Victoria College offers associate degrees, certificates, transfer programs, and workforce training courses that lead to a variety of business and technology careers.

Business AdministrationBusiness administrators oversee an organization’soperations and lead various business activities.

Begin your studies in business administration at VC before transferring to a four-year university to complete your Bachelor of Business Administration degree. You can either earn an associate of science degree at VC or complete the core curriculum, plus take courses such as these before transferring:

You can earn up to 60 credit hours at VC before transferring to a university.

Business ManagementVC’s business management program will prepare you to work in managerial positions in various industries and businesses such as retail stores, financial institutions, and manufacturing facilities.

You can obtain an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Business Management, which requires 67 credit hours to complete. The AAS degree can also be combined with the core curriculum before transferring to a four-year university BAAS program. Other options include a Business Management Skills Certificate, which requires 12-13 credit hours to complete, or a Business Management Certificate, which requires 15-16 credit hours to complete.

Computer Information Systems—NetworkingThe networking program will prepare you for entry-level jobs such as a PC technician, network technician, LAN administrator, telecommunications technician, wireless network technician, or LAN security technician.

You can obtain a Personal Computer & Local Area Network Technician Certificate, which requires 30 credit hours to complete. The certificate can also be combined with the core curriculum before transferring to a four-year university BAAS program.

Computer ScienceComputer scientists design and create new technology and troubleshoot computer problems. You can start your computer science degree at VC before transferring to a four-year university by taking courses such as:

Professional Office TechnologyReceptionists, secretaries, administrative assistants,bookkeepers, and accounting clerks help keep offices running smoothly.

You can obtain an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Professional Office Technology, which requires 62 credit hours to complete. Specializations include Accounting Assistant, Administrative Assistant, or Medical Office. You may also obtain a Professional Office Technology Certificate, which requires 26-27 credit hours to complete.

In the Golden Crescent region, secretaries and administrative assistants earn an average of $11.55 per hour, or $24,032 per year.

Real EstateReal estate brokers and sales agents are paid to sellother people’s properties and help buyers purchase the property for which they are looking.

You can receive training for a career in real estate, which requires 214 training hours to complete. After successful completion, you will be eligible to apply for a Real Estate Salesperson License with the State of Texas.

At Victoria College, you can receive training and certification in a wide variety of health careers, ranging from insurance coding to nursing. VC also has transfer programs for pre-dental, pre-medical, pre-pharmacy, and pre-veterinary studies.

Electronic Medical RecordsScribes who work with electronic medical records evaluate filing systems and equipment and maintain database records according to information management theory.

You can train for a career in electronic medical recordsin 48 training hours.

In the Golden Crescent region, electronic medical records and health information technicians are in high demand and earn an average of $12.15 per hour, or $25,280 per year.

Insurance CodingInsurance coders translate a patient’s medical diagnosisinto universal codes so that hospitals and insuranceagencies can communicate about what specific medicalservices were performed on patients.

VC’s insurance coding training course will teach you how to:

You can train for a career as a long-term care activity director in 202 training hours. The 11-week training course will prepare you to become eligible for certification as required by the Texas Department of Human Services for Nursing Home/Extended Care facilities in Texas.

Medical AssistingMedical assistants perform tasks such as checking inpatients, helping obtain x-rays, and handling medical files to keep offices running smoothly.

You can train for a medical assisting career in96 training hours. The 11-week training coursewill help you develop the basic knowledge and skills needed to function safely in a medical office/clinic environment where certification is not required.

Medical Laboratory TechnologyMedical lab technicians perform routine tests on bloodand other body fluids to help diagnose a disease andmonitor treatment effectiveness.

You can obtain an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Medical Laboratory Technology, which requires 70 credit hours to complete. Upon successful completion, you will be eligible to take the National Certification Exam at the MLT Level.

Medication AideMedication aides administer prescribed medicines toresidents of long-term care facilities and monitor foradverse reactions to medicines.

You can train for a career as a medication aide in 140 training hours. The 16-week training course prepares you to take the Texas Medication Aide Permit Examination.

Nurse AideNurse aides perform basic nursing care, such as bathing, feeding, and grooming under the direction of a nurse.

You can train for a career as a nurse aide in 144 to 150 training hours. The 8-week nurse aide program prepares you to take the Texas Nurse Aide Registry Exam.

Nursing - Professional & Vocational A nurse takes care of the sick, injured, and disabledto attain their highest level of wellness.

You can obtain a Vocational Nursing Certificate, which requires 44 credit hours to complete. Upon successful completion, you will be eligible to apply to take the National Licensure Exam for Practical Nurses.

You can also obtain an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Nursing, which requires 72 credit hours to complete. Upon successful completion, you will be eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses. Pharmacy TechnicianPharmacy technicians help pharmacists prepareprescribed medications, provide customer service, andperform administrative duties in a pharmacy.

You can train for a career as a pharmacy technician in 77 training hours. The pharmacy technician course meets the training requirements of the State Board of Pharmacy and qualifies students to apply for certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board.

You can train for a career as a phlebotomist in 57 training hours. The 11-week phlebotomy training course prepares you to work in any blood collection-related career, such as in a blood bank, hospital, or lab.

Physical Therapist AssistantPTAs assist physical therapists in providing patienttreatment, such as mobility exercises and functional training.

You can obtain an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Physical Therapist Assistant, which requires 72 credit hours to complete. Upon successful completion, you will be eligible to take the National Physical Therapist Assistant licensing examination.

In the Golden Crescent region, PTAs are in very high demand and earn an average of $28.11 per hour, or $58,475 per year.

Respiratory CareRespiratory therapists work under the direction of aphysician to evaluate, treat, and care for patients withbreathing disorders.

You can obtain an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Respiratory Care, which requires 72 credit hours to complete. Upon successful completion, you will be eligible to take a series of exams to become a registered respiratory therapist.

Industrial TradesIf you like working with your hands, are mechanically inclined, and enjoy designing and building things, considera career in industrial trades.

At VC, you can receive training and certification in a wide variety of industrial careers ranging from electrical totruck driving.

ElectricalElectricians install and maintain electrical and poweringsystems in homes, businesses, and factories.

VC offers four levels of electrical courses, ranging from an introduction level to an advanced level.

You can train for an entry-level career as an electrician in 128 training hours. The 16-week electrical program will instruct you on items such as fire alarm systems, ground fault, electrical safety, and power factor correction.

VC also offers a license renewal course that updates you on the latest edition of the National Electrical Code to help you get recertified.

In the Golden Crescent region, electricians are in demand and earn an average of $21.03 per hour,or $43,742 per year.

Electronics TechnologyElectronic technicians install, maintain, troubleshoot,repair, and replace electronic equipment to ensure safetyand quality.

You can obtain an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree with an Electronics Technology specialization, which requires 64 credit hours to complete. You may also obtain an Electronics Technology Certificate, which requires 33 hours to complete.

VC offers four levels of HVAC courses, ranging from an introduction level to an advanced level.

FirefightingYou’ll be equipped for a career in firefighting aftercompleting VC’s Fire Academy, where you will learn:

• Hands-on skills training• How to properly use fire equipment• Firefighting strategies and tactics• How fire services are organized and operated• Management techniques• Specialized job skills

You can obtain a Firefighting Certificate, which requires 34 credit hours to complete. Upon completion, you will become eligible to take the Texas Commission on Fire Protection examination and become a certified firefighter in the State of Texas. In addition, 28 credit hours will count toward a degree in fire science.

Law EnforcementThrough VC’s Police Academy, students learn to protectthe lives and property of citizens in their jurisdiction.

Students are trained to:

The Police Academy offers both a daytime trainingprogram and a nighttime training program. The Day Academy takes 5 months to complete, and the Night Academy takes 10 months to complete. You have questions. We have answers.What is the difference between a credit hour and a training hour?

Credit hours refer to the number of credits that a particular course counts towards specific requirements for a particular degree or certificate. Training hours refer to the actual amount of time a student attends class, including labs and clinicals. For example, Welding Fundamentals (WLDG 1421) is a 4-credit-hour course that meets for 96 training hours in a semester. Welding Level 1 (WLDG 1007) meets for 144 training hours and is a non-credit course, meaning it does not apply toward a degree or certificate.

When is the deadline to apply for admission to Victoria College?

There is no deadline to apply for admission to Victoria College. However, there are registration deadlines to enroll in courses each semester. For more information about registration and payment deadlines, please visitwww.victoriacollege.edu/classschedule and click on the Registration & Payment Information link for the current semester.

Once I’ve completed the steps required for admission, are there any additional requirementsI need to meet before I can register for classes? You will receive a letter from the Office of Admissions & Records if additional information is required once your application has been processed. Then, you will need to complete the following steps before you can register for classes:

1. Retrieve your username and password to access the Pirate Portal, the secure site you will use regularly to check your VC email, register for classes, make payments, and access your online courses. From the VC homepage, click on the Pirate Portal icon and then click on the “Get/Change/Forgot Your Password” link to retrieve your username and password. 2. Login to the Pirate Portal to view your registration status. From the VC homepage, click on the Pirate Portal icon and login. Click on the Academic Services tab, select the “Registration Status” link in the Registration Tools channel, and then select the current term to view your registration status. 3. Register to attend a New Student Information Session. If you plan to take online classes for the first time, you will also need to attend a Blackboard Orientation session. 4. If you’re under 30, be sure to get your bacterial meningitis immunization.
