Graduate Student Commencement Speaker CompetitionPurpose: To promote Eastern’s commitment to strengthening the academic and personal experience for our students and to showcase examples of exemplary writing and speaking, Eastern Illinois University will inaugurate the Student Commencement Speaker Series. This program replaces the former student and faculty speaker traditions at Eastern.A Student Speaker representing the Graduate School will be featured during the Fall 2016 morning ceremony Saturday, December 17, 2016.Commencement Speaker eligibility requirements:

Graduation Criteria: Students eligible for consideration must provide evidence from the degree audit that they will meet the requirements for graduation in the commencement ceremony they seek to represent. Student commencement speakers are expected to speak at their commencement ceremony.

Scholarship Criteria. Students eligible for consideration must have a graduate cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher for courses competed at Eastern Illinois University at the time that they submit materials for consideration.

 Faculty role: Students seeking to submit essays will identify a faculty mentor to assist with the project. Mentors may include course instructors, advisors, or any member of the graduate faculty who will provide guidance and support appropriate to writing an effective essay. Faculty who serve in mentor roles will introduce the Student Commencement Speaker at the commencement ceremony.Essay guidelines: 2016-2017 Essay Theme: Explain how your academic and service experiences at Eastern Illinois University taught you to become part of a community, and how you will use these experiences to influence communities, whether it is local, regional or global, in your future.Essay Length: Essays are limited to 3 pages.Essay Format: Essays are submitted electronically. The first page should include the essay title, author name, and degree program. Faculty Development Support GrantsFaculty Development support grants are awarded to individual faculty members for the purposes listed below and are subject to the dollar maximums indicated. Applicants must secure approval by submitting application forms before the review deadline. Unit A and Unit B faculty are both eligible to apply for support grants.1. Improvement of Instructional ActivityAwarded funds may be used to support attendance at workshops, conferences, other institutions of higher education, or other locations for the purpose of:Observing new teaching methods for a specific subject.Developing evaluation tools, new teaching techniques, or delivery systems, or other non-equipment, physical components of instruction.

2. Improvement of Course ContentAwarded funds may be used to obtain course information that cannot be accessed through normal channels (e.g. mail, Booth Library resources). These non-equipment, non-salary expenditures are intended for:Acquisition of materials for restructuring an existing course or designing a new course.Internships, attendance at workshops, conferences, and travel to observe new programs and others currently unavailable at Eastern Illinois University.3. Dollar MaximumsA faculty member can obtain up to $500 in a fiscal year.4. ExpectationsInformation pertaining to the improvement of instructional activity or course content shall be shared with the campus community.5. Selection ProcessFaculty Development support grant applications are collected throughout the fiscal year. They are then evaluated by the Faculty Development Advisory Committee, which is composed of representatives from each college. Responses on the application should be clear and specific.Once proposals are evaluated in terms of the guidelines and prioritized, notification is sent to the applicants. Proposals receiving the highest rankings are then funded. Acceptable, but lower ranked, proposals are held for further consideration should funding become available later in the year.

6. Important: Please note that any monies awarded for Support Grants must be spent or encumbered by the end of the current fiscal year (June 30, 2015) according to University policy.

EIU Distinguished Master's Thesis Award Competition and MAGS Thesis NominationRecognition of the highest achievement in master's degree research based on projects completed between July 1, 2014, and June 30, 2016. Awarded $500 honorarium with possible nomination for the MAGS Distinguished Thesis Award, and recognition during the Distinguished Graduate Student Awards Ceremony.

MAGS Requirements: The Midwest Association of Graduate Schools rotates the nomination categories by academic discipline yearly. If the Distinguished Master's Thesis Award winner meets the current disciplinary category then it automatically advances to the MAGS competition. If it does not meet the current MAGS criteria then the next highest ranking theses from the appropriate disciplines from the college winners will advance. The winner of the MAGS competition receives a $750 honorarium from MAGS and travel expenses (up to $500) to attend the annual MAGS conference.

Eligibility: Graduate degree-seeking candidates who completed a thesis as part of the requirements for the master's degree during the dates specified.

Application: Each department or graduate program will select one thesis from among those submitted to forward to the Council on Graduate Studies for consideration. The department or program will submit to The Graduate School a digital copy of the thesis being nominated; a digital copy of an abstract of the thesis not to exceed 300 words, which describes the research and its significance; a digital one-page resume of the nominee, and a letter from the graduate faculty mentor noting the significance and quality of the work, all to be e-mailed to Lori Henderson in the Graduate School at [email protected].

Deadline: 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 6, 2016.

The EIU College Thesis Award of ExcellencePurpose: Recognition of the highest achievement in graduate research from each of the four academic colleges based on master's thesis projects completed between July 1, 2014 and June 30, 2016. Recipients will be selected from among those who are nominated for, but do not receive, the Augustine Distinguished Master's Thesis Award. Recognition from the Graduate School will include announcement at the Distinguished Graduate Student Awards Ceremony and publication in the Graduate Scholar.

Eligibility: The same eligibility requirements as the Augustine Distinguished Thesis Award.

Graduate candidates who hold appointments as supervised instructional assistants in approved degree programs and who perform teaching and mentoring as a component of graduate education and as part of their preparation for careers as college faculty are eligible for nomination. Eligibility requires that the nominees must be enrolled during the prior Fall and current Spring terms. At least one prior term of teaching experience is required for the competition; however, all prior teaching while in pursuit of the degree at Eastern may be included in the review portfolio. The nominee must be enrolled at Eastern during the Spring term to receive recognition. Graduate coordinators from identified programs may select one assistant who meets the eligibility criteria to forward to the Council on Graduate Studies for consideration.

The Graduate School Research/Creative Activity GrantsThe purpose of the Graduate School Research Awards Competition is to provide financial incentives for outstanding graduate research and creative activity projects that include opportunities for graduate students to partner with external businesses, industries or educational agencies to foster improvements and development of new creative ideas. Applications require submission of a proposal packet that includes a proposal cover sheet, an abstract of the project, a project budget, a one-page resume of the graduate candidate, a letter of support from the partner agency, and a letter of support from the graduate faculty mentor.

at regional, state, national or international conferences between July 1st and June 30 of the current fiscal year. These grants are for reimbursement of documented travel expenses up to $300. Grants will be based on the quality of the application. Williams Travel Grant winners are required to present their projects during the Annual Graduate Student Exposition each spring semester. The recipient of this grant shall be a graduate degree-seeking candidate who is enrolled at the university during the term in which the project is to be presented.A Williams Travel Grant application will consist of the following:

1. A completed application form.2. Documentation that the work submitted has been accepted for

presentation during the eligibility dates. (A copy of an acceptance letter or page from the program is sufficient).

3. An abstract of 250 words or less describing the work presented.4. A letter from the candidate's faculty mentor that addresses (a) the

role of the student in the work and in its presentation at the meeting, (b) the contribution of the work to the candidate's field, and (c) verification that the student will be enrolled in the university at the time of the presentation.

creative activity projects done by faculty during the summer months. The awards are made available in accordance with the 2012-2016 EIU-UPI Unit A agreement.The University will fund the best quality research and creative activity at EIU regardless of discipline.1. To qualify as research, the proposed activity must have the

potential to generate knowledge. The proposed activity may be either (a) theoretical or empirical research or (b) applied research which relates to specific discipline(s).

2. To qualify as creative activity, the proposed activity need not fit the traditional mold (art, music, dance, theater, education, or creative writing) but must involve a new medium or concept and must result in an observable outcome.

2017 Distinguished Graduate StudentEvery graduate program has the opportunity to name one currently enrolled student from the program as a "Distinguished Graduate Student" to be recognized during the April awards ceremony. Criteria for selection are left to the faculty of the graduate program and the graduate coordinator is responsible for organizing the selection process and completing the notification form for the Graduate School. Hamand Society ScholarsNamed in the honor of the first dean of The Graduate School, Dr. Lavern Hamand, The Hamand Society recognizes degree-seeking graduate candidates nominated from among the current year's class of Distinguished Graduate Students whose achievements in both scholarship and service have had a documented impact on the discipline and the community. The quality and impact of the scholarship and service achievements of Hamand Society Scholars reflect the highest ideals of the engaged graduate student. Criteria includes maintaining a 3.75 GPA or higher, enrollment as a part-time or full-time graduate student, and demonstration of scholarship and service. Dr. Harold M & Alice D Cavins ScholarshipThe recipient must be a full-time student, with a declared major in a health related field, accepted to Eastern Illinois University. The recipient must be a junior, senior, or graduate student preparing for a career in a health related field. The recipient must have a 3.0 GPA at award date. The recipient must display an integrity of character and a demonstrated willingness to be of service to the community. Financial need is not a consideration. The recipient may be eligible to apply for, and receive, the award again provided she/he continues to meet the stated criteria. The award shall be announced in the Spring and paid in the following Fall semester to Eastern Illinois University to be first applied against costs (tuition, fees, housing, etc.) associated with the recipient(s) attending EIU. Weller to provide financial support for a full-time undergraduate or graduate student majoring in social sciences, history, or physical sciences, accepted to Eastern Illinois University. Requirements for this scholarship include that the recipient shall plan to pursue a career in teaching, shall have a minimum grade point average of 3.50, and shall be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student majoring in one of the identified areas.

Betty Wright Downing AwardThe recipient shall be a student enrolled in a graduate program at Eastern Illinois University with the intent of pursuing a professional career in medicine or other health related fields. The Coles County Business and Professional Women's ClubThe Charleston Business and Professional Women Local Organization accepts applications for a college scholarship to Eastern Illinois University during the Spring semester. This scholarship is for a resident of the Coles County area who is attending EIU. The Charleston BPW has awarded an annual scholarship since 1996. Applications must be returned, along with high school and college (if attended) transcripts that demonstrate at least a B average, a letter of acceptance from EIU, and two letters of recommendation. Financial need will be considered. Preference will be given in priority order as follows; 1) undergraduate students who serve EIU as a Resident Assistant during their undergraduate program and, 2) graduate students without an assistantship who serve EIU Residence Hall Program and are pursuing a graduate education and plan to pursue a career in student housing. As provided through the Director of Housing, the recipient of this scholarship will receive the award. The recipient shall engage in student affairs work within their department as a condition of the scholarship by performing weekly housing duties while serving as a Resident Assistant or completing other duties as assigned by the Director of Housing. The recipient must live in university housing. One exception to this requirement will be to students who are student teaching during the semester of the award. The recipient must maintain an overall GPA of 3.0.

2014 CMA Research AwardThe Standing Committee for Multicultural Affairs (CMA) of the American College Personnel Association (ACPA) has issued its annual call for proposals for the 2013 CMA Research Award. The fund provides up to $300 to support research/scholarly endeavors that raise awareness to issues and concerns of people of color in higher education. The selection committee will consider ALL proposals that serve this purpose. Priority funding however will be given to projects that focus on the experiences of minority faculty and staff (i.e. recruitment, retention, mentoring, work-life integration, etc.).The deadline for applications is Monday, November 12, 2012. All ACPA members are eligible. CMA membership is NOT required. Graduate students are especially encouraged to apply. Award recipients are asked to submit an article to our quarterly newsletter or facilitate a webinar on their research findings. Please limit proposals to no more than seven (7) pages (does not include cover sheet). College of Education and Professional Studies (CEPS) Development GrantCEPS Development research grant funds may be used for travel to, or registration at conferences, workshops, meetings, etc. Any work for which royalties or other remunerations are forthcoming during the grant period will not be funded. The CEPS Research and Grants Committee will conduct the selection process for awarding of grants. For the purpose of awarding these grants, “research /creativity activity” will be defined as any activity included on approved “Department Application of Criteria for Research or Creative Activity.” While grants are limited to faculty and students in the College of Education and Professional Studies, the research/creative activity project may be a collaborative effort with individuals outside of the college. However, the CEPS faculty member should be the principal investigator. Recipients of each grant must deliver an informal presentation of their results to the College of Education and Professional Studies faculty, usually at the CEPS Research Fair. Research and Grants committee will make necessary arrangements for these presentations.

Redden Fund Faculty GrantsFunds are now available for instructional development grants from the Redden Fund for the Improvement of Undergraduate Instruction funded through the Eastern Illinois University Foundation. Awards are limited to a maximum of $1,500. Faculty may apply for more than one grant.Applications are available online at www.eiu.edu/found/ (EIU Foundation website). Applicants may click the “Redden Grants” link under the “News and Information” section of the menu on the left side of the EIU Foundation homepage to print an application. A hard copy of the completed application must be submitted. Based upon the final rankings of the applications by Vice President Lord, the Foundation will support as many of these requests as current funds will allow. Errett Warner-Stanley G. Rives Higher Education Presidential AwardThe recipient of this award shall be a graduate student majoring in a field leading to a career in higher education. The recipient shall be a person of outstanding character whose actions and conduct reflect with credit upon Eastern Illinois University. The recipient shall be a student of outstanding scholastic achievement, maintaining at least a 3.5 GPA. Financial need shall be considered, but it shall be considered only after the number of candidates has been reduced to three by application of the stated criteria.
