Christ heals a man with dropsy – Manuscript - Unkown French Master

Jesus responded to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying,

“Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath, or not?” But they remained silent.

Then he took him and healed him and sent him away.

And he said to them, “Which of you, having a son or an ox

that has fallen into a well on a Sabbath day,

will not immediately pull him out?” And they could not reply to these things.

Luke 14:1-6

The Seventeenth Sunday after Trinity

Opening hymn: 2 Christ whose glory fills the skiesOur worship continues on page 1 of the green liturgy booklets.

The Collect: O LORD, we beseech thee, absolve thy people from their offences; that through thy bountiful goodness we may be delivered from the bands of those sins, which by our frailty we have committed: grant this, O heavenly Father, for Jesus Christ’s sake, our blessed Lord and Saviour. Amen.

Old Testament Lesson: Proverbs 25:6-14This is the Word of the Lord: Thanks be to God

Psalm 33:6-12

2nd part

6 By the word of the Lord were the ’ heavens ’ made : and all the hosts of them ’ by the ’ breath of his ’ mouth.7 He gathereth the waters of the sea together, as it were up’on an ’ heap : and layeth up the deep as ’ in a ’ treasure’house.8 Let all the earth ’ fear the ’ Lord : stand in awe of him, all ’ ye that ’ dwell • in the ’ world.

9 For he spake and ’ it was ’ done : he commanded ’ and it ’ stood ’ fast.10 The Lord bringeth the counsel of the ’ heathen to ’ nought : and maketh the devices of the people to be of none effect, and casteth ’ out the ’ counsels of ’ princes.

- 2 -11 The counsel of the Lord shall en’dure for’ever : and the thoughts of his heart from gene’ration to ’ gene’ration.2nd part 12 Blessed are the people whose God is the ’ Lord Je’hovah : and blessed are the folk, that he hath chosen to him to ’ be ’ his in’heritance.Glory be to the Father ’ and to • the ’ Son : and ’ to the ’ Holy ’ Ghost; As it was in the beginning is ’ now and • ever ’ shall be : world without ’ end. A ’ — ’ men.

New Testament Lesson: Ephesians 4:1-6I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call—one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The Gospel: St Luke 14:1-11

Before the Gospel we sing: Glory to you, O Lord

One Sabbath, when Jesus went to dine at the house of a ruler of the Pharisees, they were watching him carefully. And behold, there was a man before him who had dropsy.

- 3 -

And Jesus responded to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath, or not?” But they remained silent. Then he took him and healed him and sent him away. And he said to them, “Which of you, having a donkey or an ox that has fallen into a well on a Sabbath day, will not immediately pull him out?” And they could not reply to these things. Now he told a parable to those who were invited, when he noticed how they chose the places of honor, saying to them, “When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in a place of honor, lest someone more distinguished than you be invited by him, and he who invited you both will come and say to you, ‘Give your place to this person,’ and then you will begin with shame to take the lowest place. But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when your host comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at table with you. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”After the Gospel we sing: Praise to you, O ChristSermonOffertory hymn: 516 Love divine, all

loves excelling [Tune 2: Blaenwern]
